Traditionally, Chemical Engineering is the branch of engineering that applies scientific and engineering fundamentals for designing and developing new processes for producing/ manufacturing different types of chemical products/ materials useful in daily life. Chemical Engineering is applicable to wide range of technologies such as food, paper, plastic, paint, environment, energy, materials, pharmaceuticals etc. Over the years, discipline of Chemical Engineering has encompassed other non-traditional areas like biology, bio-chemical engineering, tissue engineering, material science and engineering, bio-energy, bio-materials in a big way and has evolved as a truly multidisciplinary area of study.
Chemical engineers work in almost every industry and affect the production of almost every article manufactured on an industrial scale. Some typical tasks include, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, conducting research into improved manufacturing processes, designing and planning equipment layout, incorporating safety procedures for working with dangerous chemicals, monitoring and optimizing the performance of production processes and estimating the production costs.
The rapid developmentin technology and the need for sustainable development has given rise to the need to focus on safety and environmental pollution control in manufacturing. The focus on inter-disciplinary research equips the students with an in-depth knowledge of all the fields closely related with the major discipline. The multi-disciplinary approach at Shiv Nadar University offers students to specialize in the core discipline of Chemical Engineering and combine it with other subjects of their interest so that they are ready to work and research in diverse areas.
