He served at IIT Kanpur from 1973 to 2010, and was Professor and Head as well as a Member of the Board of Governors for two years. Prof. Gupta has authored two books and edited one. He has published/presented over 120 papers and given talks in all continents as well as at the United Nations and The World Bank. Prof. Gupta was deputed by the Government of India as a Diplomat for Science and Technology at the Embassy of India, Washington DC, USA. He has been a Visiting Professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City, University of Michigan and Texas A&M University in USA, Loughborough University in UK; National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) in Taiwan, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines d'Alès (EMA) in France and China University of Petroleum. He was also a UNDP Advisor in Argentina. He is the Founding Director General of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar; and Founding Director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Rae Bareli (under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India). He was bestowed with the Distinguished Alumni Award by the University of Pennsylvania, Trevor Kletz Merit Award by Texas A&M University (where he is also an Adjunct Professor) and the Hutchinson Medal (jointly with David Edwards) by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (U.K.).
