Free-flow spillways are simpler and safer than gated ones, but the low specific flow of their traditional shapes requires high spilling nappe depths and thus huge losses of storage (100 × 109m3 worldwide). A newly evolved shape of free-flow spillway (the "Piano Key weir") has the potential to increase the specific flow as high as fourfold at lower discharges. It could substantially increase, at low cost, the safety and the storage and/or the flood control efficiency of many existing as well as new dams. It is thus very advantageous to increase the specific flow as much as possible. Some tens of existing spillways have been designed accordingly as vertical walls on a flat bottom, with a trapezoidal labyrinth layout which is much longer than the spillway length (often four times). They usually double the specific flow of an Ogee Spillway. Piano-Key Weir derives its name from its plan-form shape which looks like a 'piano-key'. It is configured as polygonal walls such as to provide a much longer crest length than the conventional ogee spillways. This paper presents experimental data analysis on this new (not patented) solution in order that: Increasing the storage of many irrigation dams is justified by the increased needs or due to the sedimentation of reservoirs. Increasing the spillage capacity is often justified by a better knowledge of hydrology. Improving flood mitigation by existing dams may be very cost effective. Positive outcome of this study will be very much relevant for dam safety concerns worldwide in the context of adverse hydrological consequences due to ongoing global warming phenomenon.

The piano key weir: A new dam safety solution for enhanced spillway capacity

The simplicity and proliferation of World Wide Web (WWW) has taken the availability of information to an unprecedented level. Moreover, this entire available information is in unstructured textual format that results search process inefficient. Simultaneously, development of web technology led to the new concept of semantic web [1], which is an extension of current web and seeks to make information understandable by machines. This creation of semantic web content involves semantic annotation of the web pages, extraction of essential data from the annotated web page and finally generation of semantic web page through processes that require high degree of engineering skill. We have developed integrated tool that helps in creation of semantic web page based on ontology [4] from HTML web page, thus enabling computers and people to work in cooperation in a better way. Automatic conversion of HTML pages to semantic web pages

A Question Answering (QA) system aims to return exact answers to natural language questions. While today information retrieval techniques are quite successful at locating within large collections of documents those that are relevant to a user's query, QA techniques that extract the exact answer from these retrieved documents still do not obtain very good accuracies. We approached the TREC 2007 Question Answering task as a semantics based question to answer matching problem. Given a question we aimed to extract the relevant semantic entities in it so that we can pin-point the answer. In this paper we show that our technique obtains reasonable accuracy compared to other systems.

IITD-IBMIRL system for question answering using pattern matching, semantic type and semantic category recognition

The thermal stability of solutions of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKPO) dissolved in dimethyl phthalate (DMP), in the presence of nitric acid (HNO 3) and sodium nitrate (NaNO3) as contaminants, was studied. MEKPO is extensively employed in the chemical industries, but despite its large use several severe accidents have been recorded in eastern Asia during the past four decades. This study was conducted to elucidate its essentially hazardous characteristics. We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to evaluate the root cause of the runaway reactions, and kinetics-based curve fitting to assess hazardous phenomena by utilizing curve fitting to optimize the kinetic parameters. All the results indicate that the mixture of MEKPO with HNO3 dramatically increases the degree of hazard in the first exothermic peak. In terms of NaNO3, it had no effect on the thermal stability of MEKPO. © 2007 American Chemical Society.

Evaluation and modeling runaway reaction of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide mixed with nitric acid

A simple hardware realization of direct torque control (DTC) scheme for fast control of induction motor torque has been presented. The proposed hardware scheme mimics the conventional switching table based DTC scheme and does not require use of any online fast computing device like microprocessor, PC or DSP. The controller uses only commonly used discrete hardware components. The experimental results of the proposed hardware implementation have been presented and supported with simulation results. Another alternate hardware scheme without using the switching table has also been proposed and the experimental results of both the schemes have been compared and found to be in agreement with each other. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. A simple hardware realization of switching table based direct torque control of induction motor

This paper describes the design and implementation of a single axis DC attraction type suspension system, where a platform (vehicle structure) of around 14 kg mass is made to remain suspended at the desired operating gap under a ferromagnetic guide-way. The prototype has four electromagnetic actuators of attraction type and four inductive gap sensors, all located at the corners of the platform. The four actuators are controlled independently through four identical controllers, and the stable levitation of the platform is achieved through the single input and single output (SISO) control of each air-gap. The emphasis of this work is on the design and development of the switched mode power amplifier cum controller unit for the four actuators. The proposed single switch-based power circuit simplifies the overall hardware, and it can be extended to any number of magnet-coils. A cascade lead compensation control scheme utilizing an inner current loop and outer position loop has been designed and implemented for the stabilization of such a highly unstable and strongly nonlinear system. The prototype has been successfully tested, and stable levitation was demonstrated with the desired operating gap. © 2007 ISA.

Design, implementation, and testing of a single axis levitation system for the suspension of a platform

In this paper, we prove that for any polynomial function / of fixed degree without multiple roots, the probability that all the (f(x + l), f(x + 2),..., f(x + k)) are quadratic non-residue is ≈ 1/2k. In particular for f(x) = x3 + ax + b corresponding to the elliptic curve y2 = x3 +ax + b, it implies that the quadratic residues (f(x + 1), f(x + 2),... in a finite field are sufficiently randomly distributed. Using this result we describe an efficient implementation of El-Gamal Cryptosystem. that requires efficient computation of a mapping between plain-texts and the points on the elliptic curve. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

A result on the distribution of quadratic residues with applications to elliptic curve cryptography

Contact center agents typically respond to email queries from customers by selecting predefined answer templates that relate to the questions present in the customer query. In this paper we present a technique to automatically select the answer templates corresponding to a customer query email. Given a set of query-response email pairs we find the associations between the actual questions and answers within them and use this information to map future questions to their answer templates. We evaluate the system on a small subset of the publicly available Pine-Info discussion list email archive and also on actual contact center data comprising customer queries, agent responses and templates.

Automatically selecting answer templates to respond to customer emails

Today an average transmission line is loaded more heavily than ever before, and this has given rise to a serious problem of voltage instability. The authors present a novel method for power system voltage instability estimation and improvement using ANN. The method is based on the fact that reactive power injections at critical buses of the power system help to steer the system away from a developing voltage collapse. The location and quantum of reactive power support has been computed based on sensitivity. The sensitivity matrix is formulated by cascading the output/input sensitivity of multiplayer perceptron model with that of input features versus reactive power injections. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on Ward-Hale 6-bus, IEEE 14-bus, and IEEE 30-bus test systems. The method can be effectively used to make the system secure against voltage collapse condition in system planning and online operation.

Sensitivity-based hybrid approach for voltage instability alleviation using ANN

Genomic Signal Processing is an emerging interdisciplinary area. The problem of Identifying Protein Coding Regions in DNA is addressed using signal processing techniques in this paper. DNA can be thought as a string formed from the alphabet set script A = {A, C, G, T}. It is found that, in protein coding regions the symbols have periodicity of 3 [1], which can be used as a cue to identify the protein coding regions using signal processing techniques. This is possible only if the symbol sequences are mapped to numbers. In this paper a new lower dimensional mapping is proposed which reduces the computational complexity by half, producing results nearly equal to those produced by a higher dimensional mapping. ©2007 IEEE.
