Professor Nayan Sharma was with IIT Roorkee for 35 years. He supervised 174 M.Tech and 21 Ph.D. theses. He has 215 research publications and member of 64 national & international technical committees. He undertook 115 consulting and 12 major national & international Research schemes. He published four books by SPRINGER.

Indian Society of Hydraulics conferred him with prestigious Jalvigyan Puraskar Award and S.N. Gupta Memorial Award in recognition of his research contribution to river engineering. He delivered talks in The Imperial College London, Southampton University in UK, Edinburgh University in Scotland, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne in Switzerland, Iowa University in USA, Instituto Superior Técnico Lisbon in Portugal, and Goettingen University in Germany.

He delivered Dr. K. L. Rao Memorial Lecture in 26th National Convention of Civil Engineers, and presented S. N. Gupta Memorial Lecture in 21^st HYDRO 2016 of The Indian Society of Hydraulics. He received coveted Indo-Swiss Bilateral Research Award as Visiting Professor in EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland. He is appointed Honorary Professor of River Science by University of Nottingham, UK in view of his eminence in River Science. His book title “River System Analysis and Management” was adjudged as Top Downloaded Title Performing as Leader in 2017 by SPRINGER during year 2017.
