Blood transfusion therapy involves multiple steps to ensure selection of safe blood component for transfusion. This includes testing for infectious markers, full ABO compatibility, free from any clinically significant red cell antibodies and acceptable donor's red cell survival rates without destruction of recipient's red cells. The red cell antibodies present in healthy blood donors can cause severe haemolytic transfusion reaction, especially in massive blood transfusion recipients and paediatric patients. Hence, screening of red cell antibodies in donor blood is important to provide compatible blood products and to avoid haemolytic transfusion reactions in susceptible patient population. This study was planned to assess prevalence, aetiology and type of unexpected red cell antibodies in a large number of whole blood donor population in north India. Methods: This three-year prospective observational study included blood donor samples for antibody screening from January 2015 to December 2017. A total of 166,803 healthy blood donors including 156,128 (93.6%) males and 10,675 (6.4%) females were screened. Results: The prevalence of red cell antibodies was 0.17 per cent in our donor population. Of the total 286 donors with red cell antibodies, 248 (86.7%) had alloantibodies, 30 (10.5%) had autoantibodies and eight donors (2.8%) showed positive antibody screening with inconclusive results. Interpretation and conclusions: Alloimmunization to red cell antigens is a challenging task for current transfusion practices. The antibody screening in blood donors may improve the quality and safety of blood transfusion in the recipients. Prevalence of red blood cell antibodies in whole blood donors: A single-centre experience in north India

With growing urbanization cities are increasingly suffering due to the abundance of built-in spaces, concrete, mortar and tarmac, urban heat islands, increasing frequency of extreme heat events and climate change. The sustainable development goal 11, emphasizes on developing green infrastructure which could minimize the environmental footprint of the cities. In this paper, we discuss the role of green infrastructure in carbon sequestration, mitigating atmospheric pollution, moderating temperature and mitigating climate change, and management of storm water. We also discuss biodiversity of green infrastructure and the latter as habitat of organisms, and provide an overview of economic value of trees in the urban areas. © 2020 Indian National Science Academy. Green infrastructure of cities: An overview

We consider an ensemble of random density matrices distributed according to the Bures measure. The corresponding joint probability density of eigenvalues is described by the fixed trace Bures-Hall ensemble of random matrices which, in turn, is related to its unrestricted trace counterpart via a Laplace transform. We investigate the spectral statistics of both these ensembles and, in particular, focus on the level density, for which we obtain exact closed-form results involving Pfaffians. In the fixed trace case, the level density expression is used to obtain an exact result for the average Havrda-Charvát-Tsallis (HCT) entropy as a finite sum. Averages of von Neumann entropy, linear entropy and purity follow by considering appropriate limits in the average HCT expression. Based on exact evaluations of the average von Neumann entropy and the average purity, we also conjecture very simple formulae for these, which are similar to those in the Hilbert-Schmidt ensemble. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Bures-Hall ensemble: Spectral densities and average entropies

The objective of this paper is to introduce and study some sequence spaces over the geometric complex numbers by means of Museilak–Orlicz function. We make an effort to study some topological properties and inclusion relations between these sequence spaces. Applications of non-Newtonian calculus for classical spaces and Orlicz functions

In the present paper we study the applications of generalized difference matrices and Orlicz function to generate some spaces of almost convergent sequences. We make an effort to study some algebraic and topological properties of these sequence spaces. Some inclusion relations between these spaces are establish. A relation of banach limit and difference matrix to generate some orlicz sequence spaces

The aim of this paper is to study some lacunary sequence spaces originated with infinite matrices and a sequence of Orlicz functions. Matrix transformations on lacunary orlicz sequence spaces and their toeplitz duals

Carbon ion implantation mediated blue photoluminescence (PL) and the corresponding bluish white phosphorescence of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) are presented. In particular, the observed 465 nm luminescence is found to be more sensitive to carbon, while its lifetime is raised to its maximum from 6.7 to 10.4 μs at a fluence of 1 × 106ions/cm The observed phenomenon seems to be associated with the formation of oxygen vacancy (V0) via carbon ion enhanced modification of local AlO6 octahedral symmetry, as revealed from X-ray absorption spectroscopy at O-K edge, and also consistent with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Detailed XPS analysis indicates the preference of carbon at the Al sites, rather than at O for both octahedral and tetrahedral structures, and form CAl cationic impurity, consistent with our density functional theory calculation. Further, carbon ion implantation driven enhanced PL lifetime is shown to be associated with energy transfer between V0 and the vicinal CAl. This work shows the potential of carbon doped AAO as a future candidate for developing rare earth free nontoxic phosphor. © 2019 Author(s).

Revealing carbon mediated luminescence centers with enhanced lifetime in porous alumina

Natural products offer an abundant source of diverse novel scaffolds that inspires development of next generation anti-malarials. With this vision, a library of scaffolds inspired by natural biologically active alkaloids was synthesized from chiral bicyclic lactams with steps/scaffold ratio of 1.7:1. On evaluation of library of scaffolds for their growth inhibitory effect against malaria parasite we found one scaffold with IC50 in low micro molar range. It inhibited parasite growth via disruption of Na+ homeostasis. P-type ATPase, PfATP4 is responsible for maintaining parasite Na+ homeostasis and is a good target for anti-malarials. Molecular docking with our scaffold showed that it fits well in the binding pocket of PfATP4. Moreover, inhibition of Na+-dependent ATPase activity by our potent scaffold suggests that it targets parasite by inhibiting PfATP4, leading to ionic imbalance. However how ionic imbalance attributes to parasite’s death is unclear. We show that ionic imbalance caused by scaffold 7 induces autophagy that leads to onset of apoptosis in the parasite evident by the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and DNA degradation. Our study provides a novel strategy for drug discovery and an insight into the molecular mechanism of ionic imbalance mediated death in malaria parasite. © 2019, The Author(s).

Natural Product Inspired Novel Indole based Chiral Scaffold Kills Human Malaria Parasites via Ionic Imbalance Mediated Cell Death

A number of experimental anomalies involving neutrinos hint towards the existence of at least an extra (a very light) sterile neutrino. However, such a species, appreciably mixing with the active neutrinos, is disfavored by different cosmological observations like Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Large Scale Structure (LSS). Recently, it was shown that the presence of additional interactions in the sterile neutrino sector via light bosonic mediators can make the scenario cosmologically viable by suppressing the production of the sterile neutrinos from active neutrinos via matter-like effect caused by the mediator. This mechanism works assuming the initial population of this sterile sector to be negligible with respect to that of the Standard Model (SM) particles, before the production from active neutrinos. However, there is fair chance that such bosonic mediators may couple to the inflaton and can be copiously produced during (p)reheating epoch. Consequently, they may ruin this assumption of initial small density of the sterile sector. In this article we, starting from inflation, investigate the production of such a sterile sector during (p)reheating in a large field inflationary scenario and identify the parameter region that allows for a viable early Universe cosmology.

Inflation, (p)reheating and neutrino anomalies: production of sterile neutrinos with secret interactions

We perform a comprehensive dark matter analysis of left-right supersymmetric scenarios that includes constraints from dark matter direct and indirect detection experiments and that presents distinctive features from those available in minimal supersymmetry. We concentrate on dark matter candidates which, while satisfying all constraints, are different from those of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We consider in our analysis all possible co-annihilation channels relevant for setups in which several states are light and nearly degenerate and devise a set of representative benchmark points, requiring co-annihilations, which satisfy all restrictions. We then study their consequent LHC signals, which exhibit promising new multileptonic signatures involving WR, that if observed, would provide a strong support for left-right supersymmetry.
