Contemporary issues in social media marketing

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between management practices and manufacturing performance, based on evidence from India and Malaysia – two countries from the cultural area of Southern Asia. Design/methodology/approach: The authors theorized by drawing not only on the strategic human resource management (SHRM) literature but also on cross-cultural research. A total of 233 leaders constituted this study’s sample: 96 production leaders from 16 Indian companies and 137 production leaders from 16 Malaysian companies participated in the survey. Findings: Some of the high-performance work practices (HPWPs) were effective across India and Malaysia. The use of HPWPs in Indian culture led to better manufacturing performance than the use of HPWPs in Malaysian culture. Research limitations/implications: This study did not measure national culture itself but instead used a dummy-coded variable of country as its proxy. Not only can national culture explain varieties in management practices including HPWPs, but it can also interact with these practices to affect performance. Practical implications: Indian and Malaysian managers can learn about their management practices from this, and they can learn about benefits they might bring to their workplaces if they manage through the use of HPWPs. Originality/value: The authors’ research provides insight into the capability of national culture to moderate the relationship between HPWPs and manufacturing performance, even among two countries situated in the same region of Southern Asia. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited.

A study on management practices and manufacturing performance in India and Malaysia

This article introduces a number of methods that can be useful for examining the emergence of large-scale structures in collaboration networks. The study contributes to sociological research by investigating how clusters of research collaborators evolve and sometimes percolate in a collaboration network. Typically, we find that in our networks, one cluster among the leading ones eventually wins the growth race by percolating through the network, spanning it and rapidly filling up a significant volume of it. We show how this process is governed by the dynamics of cluster growth in the network. When operating in a percolating regime, this class of networks possesses many useful functional properties, which have important sociological implications. We first develop the methodological tools to perform a study of the intrinsic clustering process. Then, to understand the actual large-scale structure formation process in the network, we apply the theoretical methods to simulate a number of realistic scenarios, including one based on actual data on the collaboration behavior of a sample of researchers. From the perspective of social science research, our methods can be adapted to suit the application domains of many other types of real social processes. © 2015, © The Author(s) 2015.

Examining the Emergence of Large-scale Structures in Collaboration Networks: Methods in Sociological Analysis

The paper shows the contribution of evolutionary techniques in the field of optimization. Evolution is a technique which is based on real-world scenarios. It works on Darwin's theory and many algorithms have been proposed in this field to optimize the results. Each algorithm proposed has its advantages and disadvantages and a new technique is brought to overcome the drawbacks of the previously proposed technique. In this paper, a new approach is proposed based on SFLA and simulated annealing which works on memetic and PSO approaches along with basic temperature idea of simulated annealing. The graphs are attached to show the various results obtained. It is shown that it is better than other algorithms in various factors. © 2016 IEEE.

An improved evolution based optimization algorithm originated from the concept of SFLA and simulated annealing

This study explores the linkages among three forms of organisational commitments and occupational (professional) or career commitments of non-managers and managers in Japanese organisations. Is there any conflict between these two forms of employee commitment based on the new performance or result oriented management system that is adopted by Japanese organisations? We undertook interviews and surveyed 308 subjects, which constitute 227 respondents from non-managerial employees with the support of members from RENGO (Japanese Trade Union) and 81 mid-level managers from 18 Japanese companies located in the Kanto region of Japan between 2009 and 2010. Hierarchical OLS regressions indicate that there a 'no-conflict' relationship between occupational commitment and overall organisational commitment of the Japanese employees. The research findings contribute to the limited literature available on the study of both organisational and occupational commitments of employees in Asian workplace setting. Practical relevance of the study has also been discussed. © 2016 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

An empirical study on commitments of Japanese Employees

In recent years, the information systems research community has been experiencing an exciting time discovering and coming to grips with many unexplored or untapped opportunities for research that lie at the intersection of the disciplines of information systems and technology, big data, analytics, and data science. In this article, some of the critical aspects of the big data problem are discussed, and their importance as well as relevance to information systems research is shown. Big data analytics: A field of opportunities for information systems and technology researchers

In a collaboration network environment for software development, it is a highly desirable managerial objective to establish and maintain a stable balance of ongoing engineering activities and workload distributions among the project engineers. Grounded on a theoretical framework and associated simulation models to understand the emergence of this balance, we show that conditioning the development process to remain confined in a stable region of the dynamics could be delicate affair in real applications. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that it is technically feasible to control ongoing development by suitably restricting relevant parameters of the production dynamics, which amounts to achieving a stable balance between self-directed and peer-induced work efforts expended by the project engineers in building the final software product. Strategies for realizing this condition have important implications for managerial decision-making in collaborative software development.

Balancing self-directed and peer-induced efforts in an information technology collaborative software development: A network approach

A shortage of scientifically trained manpower in India today is largely due to the fact that fewer and fewer students are being attracted to pursue higher studies in basic science, as current science enrolment data reveal. Ultimately, because of this shortage, developments in science and technology and science-based industry are slowing down, and the basic qualities of material life are continually being compromised. Several other countries are also contending with this problem, but India’s case has largely remained underrepresented in current research. To improve the situation, a number of competitive scholarship programs have been started in India to attract young students to pursue higher studies in science in greater numbers. For one such program, using a sample of more than 8,600 high-school students, we examine how a number of socioeconomic factors govern students’ decision to pursue science higher studies in the country. We find that student age, gender, family income, exam scores, use of computers and the internet, travels, and possession of modern consumer goods at home contribute to students’ increased mobility in search of better educational facilities needed for the preparation of a career in science. Our results have implications for schools and teachers, globalization, scientific literacy, and the general prosperity of life in the country. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop data envelopment analysis (DEA) models and algorithms for efficiency improvement when the inputs and output weights are restricted and there is fixed availability of inputs in the system. Design/methodology/approach: Limitation on availability of inputs is represented in the form of constant sum of inputs (CSOI) constraint. The amount of excess input of an inefficient decision-making unit (DMU) is redistributed among other DMUs in such a way so that there is no reduction in their efficiency. DEA models have been developed to design the optimum strategy to reallocate the excess input. Findings: The authors have developed the method for reallocating the excess input among DMUs while under CSOI constraint and parameter weight restrictions. It has been shown that in this work to improve the efficiency of an inefficient DMU one needs the cooperation of selected few DMUs. The working of the models and results have been shown through a case study on carbon dioxide emissions of 32 countries. Research limitations/implications: The limitation of the study is that only one DMU can expect to benefit from the application of these methods at any given time. Practical implications: Results of the paper are useful in situations when decision maker is exploring the possibility of transferring the excess resources from underperforming DMUs to the other DMUs to improve the performance. Originality/value: This strategy of reallocation of excess input will be very useful in situations when decision maker is exploring the possibility of transferring the excess resources from underperforming DMUs to the other DMUs to improve the performance.
