Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze various critical success factors (CSFs) that can facilitate smartphone manufacturing in India. This paper further aims to understand the mutual interactions among these CSFs through identification of the hierarchical relationships among them. Design/methodology/approach – A framework for a smartphone manufacturing system has been developed, wherein the hierarchical inter-relationships between identified CSFs have been presented and interpreted using total interpretive structural modeling (TISM). Cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification analysis has been further employed to identify the driving power as well as dependence power of these CSFs. Findings – In the present research, 15 CSFs have been identified through literature review and expert opinions. The hierarchical framework developed using TISM has revealed the inter-dependencies among these CSFs. This research further categorizes CSFs into three clusters. The first cluster comprises of CSFs having high dependence power, the second cluster identifies CSFs having high driving power and the third cluster identifies CSFs which act as linkages between the driver CSFs and dependent CSFs. Research limitations/implications – This study has implications for both practitioners and academia. It provides a comprehensive list of CSFs that are relevant to develop a smartphone ecosystem in India. In addition, this study will help decision makers to strategically focus on the main drivers of the ecosystem that requires the immediate attention of decision makers. The methodology employed in this study provides a mechanism to conduct an exploratory study by identifying the factors and analyzing their interactions through the development of a hierarchical framework. Originality/value – The proposed framework developed through qualitative modeling is an effort to understand relevant factors that can promote the smartphone manufacturing ecosystem. This study makes a significant contribution in the literature of smartphone manufacturing, which captures the perspective of different stakeholders. © 2016, Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

A TISM modeling of critical success factors of smartphone manufacturing ecosystem in India

Industrialization across major economies of the world has led to various economic, social, and environmental opportunities as well as challenges. Thus, the need to monitor and control economic activities keeping sustainability of system as the long-term goal has evolved. During the last few decades, the policy makers have developed many guidelines or standards and measurement frameworks to promote the concepts of sustainability across various industrial domains. Among them, ISO 14000 certification is the most commonly adopted Environment Management System (EMS) by business enterprises around the world. However, as literature suggests, the process of ISO certification is entirely voluntary and non-governmental, this study has been designed to empirically test the influence of ISO certification on sustainability performance of leading states of the Indian leather industry. The findings reveal that, except economic sustainability, Uttar Pradesh (UP) has performed the best among the selected states, which could be attributed to its higher proportion of ISO certified leather firms. However, it was found, using firm-wise unit data analysis, that there is insignificant difference in performance between certified and not certified firms in all the selected states. The field study supports this anomaly with the reason that firms acquire the certification under the pressure of overseas customers to meet the requirement of environmental compliance on paper only. Thus, though the Govt. of India has taken correct step by subsidizing 75% expense of certification for MSMEs, it failed to monitor its effectiveness among the leather processing firms. © 2016, Council for Social and Economic Studies. A new technique for trust computation and routing in VANET

The main objective of the paper is to assess the performance of urban local governments in India taking the physical levels of services provided by them as the ‘outputs’ and the expenditures on resources to provide these services as ‘inputs’ in an integrated framework and pinpoint some possible sources of mis-utilization of resources. We use nonparametric two-stage data envelopment analysis technique to derive the efficiency scores, with a subsequent analysis of slacks associated with the optimization exercise which quantifies the extent of mis-utilization of resources. The main findings suggest that the city governments can provide the same levels of services by using resources lesser by 27 \% of what they currently use. We also find that the extent of unproductive spending and under-provision of services are more pronounced in smaller cities. Mis-utilization of resources in factors like establishment and laborcost is more pronounced as the establishment expenditures and contractual payments in the laborcost component involve more leakages. © 2015, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Financial management and service delivery: a nonparametric analysis for Indian cities

This paper proposes, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models and algorithms to reduce inputs and increase outputs for an inefficient Decision Making Unit (DMU) in a network DEA. Inputs and outputs considered for change are under constant sum constraint. In a network, DMU composed of multiple divisions, it is possible that changes in inputs and outputs of one division may affect the efficiency of other divisions. At the same time, it is also possible to change the efficiency of a division without changing the efficiency of the entire network. Models to reallocate inputs/outputs under constant sum constraint need to take these possibilities into account. The reallocation of inputs or outputs is done without reducing the network DEA efficiency of the other DMUs. Models and algorithms have been developed to transfer intermediate products from one DMU to another under constant sum constraint. These models and algorithms will help the decision maker to allocate resources more effectively among various divisions in order to improve the efficiency of the system consisting of these interrelated divisions. Theoretical results have been illustrated with the help of a numerical example. © 2015 IEEE.

Islamic perspectives on marketing and consumer behavior: Planning, implementation and control

In this exploratory study, we analyze co-authorship networks of collaborative cancer research in India. The complete network is constructed from bibliometric data on published scholarly articles indexed in two well-known electronic databases covering two 6-year windows from 2000 to 2005 and 2006 to 2011 inclusive. Employing a number of important metrics pertaining to the underlying topological structures of the network, we discusses implications for effective policies to enhance knowledge generation and sharing in cancer research in the country. With some modifications, our methods can be applied without difficulty to examine policy structure of related disciplines in other countries of the world. © Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary 2014

Embedded information structures and functions of co-authorship networks: Evidence from cancer research collaboration in india

In January 2011 Tata Steel Ltd, a world-size steel company in India and a flagship company of the $80b Tata Group, announced an issue of equity to the investing public through a book-building process. This was one of the many securities that the company issued during 2007-2011. The company would raise Rs 34,770m and Rs 33,850m from the issue at the upper and lower ends of the price band. The case opens with an analyst studying the company's financial condition with the objective of making an investment recommendation. Students are asked to evaluate the attractiveness of the offer and its timing apart from undertaking an analysis of the historical choice of securities. The case can be used to teach students capital structure theories, the thought process behind security issuance, the dynamic nature of finance, and the role of a CFO and valuation analysis. © 2015 World Scientific Publishing Company.
