This study investigates the diagnostic sensitivity of gamma/beta and alpha/gamma ratios in discriminating dementia patients from healthy subjects. Our analysis uses EEG based Multivariate Fourier Decomposition method to extract the features of brain rhythms (alpha, gamma and beta) and their respective ratios for characterization. These features are analyzed using correlation in the sub-band of the envelope. Based on the results of this study, we propose that features gamma/beta and alpha/gamma ratios can be further analyzed using an extension of this method to fully evaluate their potential in the characterization of dementia. © 2016 IEEE.

Fourier decomposition method based descriptor of EEG signals to identify dementia

Low flight endurance is a pitfall commonly identified in most modern-day battery powered micro aerial vehicles. This paper presents the design and analysis of a ducted fan micro aerial vehicle(MAV) having a multifunctional, modular structure in order to address the above problem. The ducted fan rotorcraft has been designed particularly to meet the safety and hover efficiency needs for a prolonged indoor surveillance mission. A detailed literature survey on rotorcraft MAVs and multifunctional structural batteries has been reported and discussed. The paper involves detailed conceptual, preliminary and final design stages of a structurally and aerodynamically optimized axial fan that successfully caters to lower power consumption as compared to similar off the shelf propellers available in the market. The MAV incorporates multifunctionality by merging its structural and energy elements into a single subsystem (PAN-based carbon fiber batteries) thereby enhancing flight endurance. © 2017 by the American Helicopter Society International, Inc. Design of a ducted-fan micro-rotorcraft with structural battery

The extreme rainfall event during June 2013 in the Western Himalayas caused widespread flash floods, which triggered landslides, a lake-outburst, and debris flow. For the hydrological study of such an unexpected extreme event, it is essential to have reliable and accurate rainfall predictions based on satellite observations. The mountainous state of Uttarakhand is covered by complex topography, and this state has few, unevenly distributed, rain gauge networks. This unique study was conducted to evaluate three satellite based rainfall products (i.e., TMPA-3B42, Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), and NOAA CPC Morphing Technique (CMORPH)) against the observed rain gauge-based India Meteorological Department (IMD) gridded dataset for this rainfall episode. The results from this comprehensive study confirmed that the magnitude of precipitation and peak rainfall intensity were underestimated in TMPA-3B42 and CMORPH against gauge-based IMD data, while GSMaP showed dual trends with under- and over-predictions. From the results of the statistical approach on the determination of error statistic metrics (MAE (mean absolute error), NRMSE (normalized root mean square error), PBIAS (percent bias), and NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency)) of respective satellite products, it was revealed that TMPA-3B42 predictions were more relevant and accurate compared to predictions from the other two satellite products for this major event. The TMPA-3B42-based rainfall was negatively biased by 18\%. Despite these caveats, this study concludes that TMPA-3B42 rainfall was useful for monitoring extreme rainfall event in the region, where rain-gauges are sparse. © 2017 by the authors.

Evaluation of satellite-derived rainfall estimates for an extreme rainfall event over Uttarakhand, Western Himalayas

In the present analysis, a photovoltaic (PV) integrated greenhouse system under forced mode developed for biogas heating. Different factors have been assessed for weather condition of IIT, New Delhi, India. Ambient air temperature and radiation data have been measured experimentally. Further, thermal model has been derived for the PV greenhouse and various factor like greenhouse air temperature, solar cell temperature, and outlet air temperature through duct have been evaluated with the help of MATLAB 2013a software. Thermal energy, electrical energy, overall thermal energy, overall thermal efficiency, cell efficiency and thermal efficiency have been calculated. Thermal energy, overall thermal energy electrical energy and for a clear day found to be 4.55 kWh, 0.60 and 6.14 kWh respectively. Further, overall average thermal efficiency throughout the day found to be 69%. © 2016 IEEE.

Energy analysis of photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) greenhouse under forced mode without load condition

In this paper, a complete transmitter has been designed using low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) technology. It is a new analog technology based on the serial I/O interface data communications. The complete transmitter circuit consists of driver, cascode current mirror circuit, pseudo random binary sequence (PRBS), and electrostatic discharge (ESD) pad. Here, transmitter is designed initially, and its biasing has been done using cascode current mirror. The layout parameter variation approach has been used to design ESD protection circuit for transmitter. An effort was made to reduce the parasitic capacitance and parasitic resistance. It helps to improve the performance of transmitter and reducing electrostatic discharge issues. The complete system has been designed using 0.18 μm CMOS technology at 1.8 V. The data rate of 2 Gbps and power consumption of 6.3 mW has been achieved using Cadence virtuoso PDK of Silatera Malaysia. © 2016 IEEE.

A methodology for designing LVDS interface system

In this paper, a 2-D analytical model for surface potential and threshold voltage of novel vertical super-thin body (VSTB) FET has been derived by solving 2-D Poisson equation. The analytical surface potential expression for gate-side surface and sidewall side surface has been modeled using parabolic surface potential approximation. The threshold voltage model for the VSTB FET has been derived by applying strong inversion criterion at the surface potential minimum value. The threshold voltage model for the VSTB FET has been analyzed by varying the body thickness, oxide thickness, and channel doping concentrations. The drain-induced barrier lowering and threshold voltage roll-off parameters are also extracted and analyzed for different body thicknesses. The models for surface potential and threshold voltage have been compared with the results obtained from the 2-D numerical device simulator and a very good agreement between the two has been observed. © 2017 IEEE.

2-D Analytical Modeling of Surface Potential and Threshold Voltage for Vertical Super-Thin Body FET

The World Wide Web (WWW) and mobile devices have become an indispensable part of life in this time. The pervasiveness of location acquisition technologies like global positioning system (GPS) has enabled the convenient logging of the movement sequences of users using mobile devices. This work proposes a personalised tourist spot recommender system for mobile users using genetic algorithm (GA) for a situation when explicit user ratings for tourist spots are not available. Implicit ratings of users for tourist spots are mined using GPS trajectory logs. GA is used to evolve ratings of unvisited spots using implicit ratings. GPS trajectory dataset of 178 users collected by Microsoft Research Asia's GeoLife project is used for the purpose of evaluation and experiments. We emphasise that proposed approach is comparable with existing related approaches when compared in terms of average root mean squared error (RMSE) and provides focused, personalised and relevant recommendations. Evolving recommendations from past travel sequences using soft computing techniques

In this paper, an efficient implementation of the concurrent decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is carried out using offset binary coding (OBC) based on distributed arithmetic (DA). The concurrent decision feedback equalizer is employed in multi-gigabit systems which uses the principle of parallelization. However, the hardware complexity of adders and multipliers rises quadratically with parallelization factor. In our proposed technique, we have used look-up table (LUT) and shift-accumulate block as per DA requirement. In order to reduce the access time of LUT, we employed OBC scheme which therefore improves the speed of filtering operation. Moreover, it also reduces the chip area for LUT based filter design. Furthermore, our design provides significant reduction of hardware complexities in spite of slight increase in address decoding logic of OBC combinations while LUT complexity grows linearly. By doing so, the concurrent nature of look-ahead DFE is unaltered and can still be used for multi-gigabit applications. We have estimated hardware complexity and critical path of our design and compared with best existing schemes. Synthesis is performed in UMC 180 nm CMOS technology using cadence RTL compiler for the feedback filter length N = 4, 6 and 8. The proposed structure of concurrent look-ahead DFE is found to have low area in comparison to other schemes for any length of the feedback filter. © 2016 IEEE.

Efficient implementation of concurrent lookahead decision feedback equalizer using offset binary coding

Designing a durability test for an automatic transmission that appropriately reflects customer usage during the lifetime of the vehicle is a formidable task; while the transmission and its components must survive severe usage, overdesigning components leads to unnecessary weight, increased fuel consumption and increased emissions. Damage to transmission components is a function of many parameters including customer driving habits and vehicle and transmission characteristics such as weight, powertrain calibration, and gear ratios. Additionally, in some cases durability tests are required to verify only a subset of the total parameter space, for example, verifying only component modifications. Lastly, the ideal durability test is designed to impose the worst case loading conditions for the maximum number of internal components, be as short as practicable to reduce testing time, with minimal variability between tests in order to optimize test equipment and personnel resources. In this work, customer usage correlation data and fatigue damage models are used to analytically determine expected component level damage values. These values are then statistically evaluated to establish customer lifetime design targets. This paper describes a methodology for creating a combined duty cycle from a collection of routes by reverse deriving above design targets such that the combined duty cycle represents the customer lifetime design targets for multiple transmission components. The combined duty cycle data becomes the key input for designing or modifying a customized automatic transmission system durability key life test (KLT) for a given vehicle program. A Method for Rapid Durability Test Development

In this work two isomeric copolymers of benzodithiophene and BODIPY have been designed and synthesized. Structural isomeric polymers were designed such that one of the polymers exhibits more planar architecture, which would help in understanding the effect of structural isomerism and planarity in the polymer backbone on charge carrier mobility. Structural differences in of both these structures were also studied using DFT and TDDFT calculations. © 2017 IEEE.
