""Life is good for only two things, discovering mathematics and teaching mathematics."" - Siméon Poisson (1781-1840)
The Department of Mathematics at SNU offers programs and courses that embody the interdisciplinary and the multidisciplinary nature of the university. Its academic programs provide a solid base both for further studies as well as for careers in industry. There is a great demand for mathematicians in various sectors: investment banks, insurance companies, financial institutions, engineering consultancies, medical research, bioinformatics, software, computer security, and defense. Well trained students are also sought by universities all over the world for their research programs. The Department of Mathematics offers both undergraduate and graduate programs: B.Sc. (Research), M.Sc., and Ph.D. A special feature is the integration of hands-on work and research into all our programs.
Other distinguishing characteristics are:
The faculty members have expertise across areas of both pure and applied mathematics, such as functional analysis, harmonic analysis, number theory, representation theory, quantum groups, graph theory, networks, encryption, numerical analysis, differential equations, probability, statistics, mathematical finance, and mathematical biology. They have studied or worked at leading institutions across the world, and their research is published in journals of high international repute. With 16 faculty members, the Department is well-placed to offer a variety of courses and activities.
Activities & Recognition: In 2015, we won the DST-FIST grant towards setting up a Departmental Research Computer Lab, as well as a dedicated Department Library. We have also hosted important national conferences and schools in mathematics such as the Mathematical Training & Talent Search Programme, Annual Foundational School, and Advanced Instructional School.
