Abstract: We propose a new mechanism to generate minuscule active neutrino masses in a five-dimensional (5d) spacetime of an interval without introducing SU(2)L singlet neutrinos. Under asymmetric boundary conditions on the two end points, a bulk mass for a 5d fermion allows a Dirac particle with a tiny mass eigenvalue. Implementing this mechanism, which provides us a new tool for building neutrino mass models, to the standard model gauge structure is possible when all the gauge bosons and the Higgs boson are localized on one of the branes. © 2016, The Author(s).

Active Dirac neutrinos via SU(2)L doublets in 5d

We consider lepton flavor violating Higgs decay, specifically h→μτ, in a leptoquark model. We introduce two scalar leptoquarks with the SU(3)c×SU(2)L×U(1)Y quantum numbers, (3,2,7/6) and (3,2,1/6), which do not generate dimension-4 operators mediating proton decay. They can mix with each other by interactions with the standard model Higgs. The constraint from the charged lepton flavor violating process, τ-→μ-γ, is very strong when only one leptoquark contribution is considered. However, we demonstrate that significant cancellation is possible between the two leptoquark contributions. We show that we can explain the CMS (ATLAS) excess in h→μτ. We also show that muon (g-2) anomaly can also be accommodated. © 2016 American Physical Society.

Leptoquark explanation of h →μτ and muon (g-2)

Historically, infectious diseases caused considerable damage to human societies, and they continue to do so today. To help reduce their impact, mathematical models of disease transmission have been studied to help understand disease dynamics and inform prevention strategies. Vaccination–one of the most important preventive measures of modern times–is of great interest both theoretically and empirically. And in contrast to traditional approaches, recent research increasingly explores the pivotal implications of individual behavior and heterogeneous contact patterns in populations. Our report reviews the developmental arc of theoretical epidemiology with emphasis on vaccination, as it led from classical models assuming homogeneously mixing (mean-field) populations and ignoring human behavior, to recent models that account for behavioral feedback and/or population spatial/social structure. Many of the methods used originated in statistical physics, such as lattice and network models, and their associated analytical frameworks. Similarly, the feedback loop between vaccinating behavior and disease propagation forms a coupled nonlinear system with analogs in physics. We also review the new paradigm of digital epidemiology, wherein sources of digital data such as online social media are mined for high-resolution information on epidemiologically relevant individual behavior. Armed with the tools and concepts of statistical physics, and further assisted by new sources of digital data, models that capture nonlinear interactions between behavior and disease dynamics offer a novel way of modeling real-world phenomena, and can help improve health outcomes. We conclude the review by discussing open problems in the field and promising directions for future research. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Statistical physics of vaccination

The cholesterol partitioning and condensing effect in the liquid-ordered (Lo) and liquid-disordered (Ld) phases were systematically investigated for ternary mixture lipid multilayers consisting of 1:1 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine/1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine with varying concentrations of cholesterol. X-ray lamellar diffraction was used to deduce the electron density profiles of each phase. The cholesterol concentration in each phase was quantified by fitting of the electron density profiles with a newly invented basic lipid profile scaling method that minimizes the number of fitting parameters. The obtained cholesterol concentration in each phase versus total cholesterol concentration in the sample increases linearly for both phases. The condensing effect of cholesterol in ternary lipid mixtures was evaluated in terms of phosphate-to-phosphate distances, which together with the estimated cholesterol concentration in each phase was converted into an average area per molecule. In addition, the cholesterol position was determined to a precision of (±0.7Å) and an increase of disorder in the lipid packing in the Lo phase was observed for total cholesterol concentration of 20∼30\%. © 2016 Biophysical Society.

Cholesterol Partition and Condensing Effect in Phase-Separated Ternary Mixture Lipid Multilayers

Gel is an intermediate phase of solid and liquid, which exhibits properties of both, and this unique feature of gel has made it an excellent choice as a reaction medium for the nanomaterials synthesis. Herein, we report use of oil swollen surfactant gels as reaction medium and exfoliation medium, for the synthesis of metals (Au, Ag) nanoparticles and graphene, respectively. Confined growth of metals (Au and Ag) nanoparticles, has been achieved by exploring tween 80 based surfactant gel as a reaction medium. Au NPs prepared within tween 80 gel were found to be spherical with size ~5 nm, arranged in template micelles. Heating triggered the growth of Au nanoparticles and particles of various shapes including triangles, rods and pentagonal, were produced. Au and Ag containing tween 80 gels were found to be promising as catalysts for the nitrophenol reduction. Apart from separate synthesis of Au and Ag nanoparticles, bimetallic (Au-Ag) nanoparticles have also been synthesized by taking advantage of selective reducing property of tween 80. First time CTAB gel has been utilized as an exfoliation medium for the quick exfoliation of graphite into graphene sheets, eliminating the necessity of any external driving force such as sonication or heating, to reinforce exfoliation. © 2016 Elsevier Inc.

Application of oil-swollen surfactant gels as a growth medium for metal nanoparticle synthesis, and as an exfoliation medium for preparation of graphene

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is commonly known as world's most expensive spice with rich source of apocarotenoids and possesses magnificent medicinal properties. To understand the molecular basis of apocarotenoid biosynthesis/accumulation, we performed transcriptome sequencing from five different tissues/organs of C. sativus using Illumina platform. After comprehensive optimization of de novo transcriptome assembly, a total of 105, 269 unique transcripts (average length of 1047 bp and N50 length of 1404 bp) were obtained from 206 million high-quality paired-end reads. Functional annotation led to the identification of many genes involved in various biological processes and molecular functions. In total, 54% of C. sativus transcripts could be functionally annotated using public databases. Transcriptome analysis of C. sativus revealed the presence of 16721 SSRs and 3819 transcription factor encoding transcripts. Differential expression analysis revealed preferential/specific expression of many transcripts involved in apocarotenoid biosynthesis in stigma. We have revealed the differential expression of transcripts encoding for transcription factors (MYB, MYB related, WRKY, C2C2-YABBY and bHLH) involved in secondary metabolism. Overall, these results will pave the way for understanding the molecular basis of apocarotenoid biosynthesis and other aspects of stigma development in C. sativus.

De novo transcriptome assembly and comprehensive expression profiling in Crocus sativus to gain insights into apocarotenoid biosynthesis

Non-coding RNAs constitute a major portion of the transcriptome in most of eukaryotes. Long non-coding transcripts originating from the DNA segment present between the protein coding genes are termed as long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs). Several evidences suggest the role of lincRNAs in regulation of various biological processes. In this study, we identified a total of 2248 lincRNAs in chickpea using RNA-seq data from eight successive stages of flower development and three vegetative tissues via an optimized pipeline. Different characteristic features of lincRNAs were studied and compared with those of predicted mRNAs in chickpea. Further, we utilized a method using network propagation algorithm to reveal the putative function of lincRNAs in plants. In total, at least 79% of the identified chickpea lincRNAs were assigned with a putative function. A comprehensive expression profiling revealed differential expression patterns and tissue specificity of lincRNAs in different stages of flower development in chickpea. In addition, potential lincRNAs-miRNA interactions were explored for the predicted lincRNAs in chickpea. These findings will pave the way for understanding the role of lincRNAs in the regulatory mechanism underlying flower development in chickpea and other legumes. © The Author(s) 2016.

Genome-wide analysis of long intergenic non-coding RNAs in chickpea and their potential role in flower development

The spiro[pyrrolidine-3, 3-oxindole] moiety is present as a core in number of alkaloids with substantial biological activities. Here in we report design and synthesis of a library of compounds bearing spiro[pyrrolidine-3, 3 -oxindole] motifs that demonstrated exceptional inhibitory activity against the proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The synthesis involved a one pot Pictet Spengler-Oxidative ring contraction of tryptamine to the desired scaffolds and occurred in 1:1 THF and water with catalytic trifluoroacetic acid and stoichiometric N-bromosuccinimide as an oxidant. Phenotypic profiling indicated that these molecules induce apoptotic cell death in MCF-7 cells. Target deconvolution with most potent compound 5l from the library, using chemical proteomics indicated histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) and prohibitin 2 as the potential cellular binding partners. Molecular docking of 5l with HDAC2 provided insights pertinent to putative binding interactions. © The Author(s) 2016.

Spiro[pyrrolidine-3, 3-oxindole] as potent anti-breast cancer compounds: Their design, synthesis, biological evaluation and cellular target identification

The land degradation due to salinity and waterlogging is a global phenomenon, afflicting about one billion hectares within the sovereign borders of at least 75 countries. Besides staring at the food security, it has far reaching and unacceptable socio-economic consequences since a large proportion of this land is inhabited by smallholder farmers. The anthropogenic-environmental changes and the climate change are further adding to the problem of salinity and waterlogging. The phenomenon of sea-level rise will bring more areas under waterlogged salinity due to inundation by sea water. Thus, dealing with the salinity in reality is becoming a highly onerous task owing to its complex nature, uncertainty and differential temporal and spatial impacts. Nevertheless, with the need to provide more food, feed, fuel, fodder and fiber to the expanding population, and non-availability of new productive land, there is a need for productivity enhancement of these lands. In fact, the salt-affected and waterlogged lands cannot be neglected since huge investments have been made throughout the world in the development of irrigation and drainage infrastructure. The social, economic and environmental costs being high for theon-and/off-farm reclamation techniques, saline agriculture including agroforestry inculcated with modern innovative techniques, is now emerging as a potential tool not only for arresting salinity and waterlogging but for other environmental services like mitigate climate change, sequester carbon and biodiversity restoration. This publication attempts to address a wide range of issues, principles and practices related to the salinity involved in rehabilitation of waterlogged saline soils and judicious use of saline waters including sea water. Many of the site specific case studies typical to the saline environment including coastal ecologies sustaining productivity, rendering environmental services, conserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change have been described in detail. Written by leading researchers and experts of their own fields, the book is a must, not only for salinity experts but also for policy makers, environmentalists, students and educationists alike. More importantly, it contributes to reversing the salinity trends and teaches to sustain with salinity ensuring the livelihood of resource-poor farming families leaving in harsh ecologies including coastal areas which are more vulnerable to climate change. © Springer India 2016.

Innovative saline agriculture

<p>In this paper, a theoretical model is developed to investigate the performance of the hybrid solar thermoelectric generator (HSTEG) system, which is designed without (B-HSTEG) and with an evacuated glass tube (V-HSTEG). The heat loss, power output, thermal efficiency, and electrical efficiency of the B-HSTEG/V-HSTEG system are evaluated by analyzing the design parameters such as geometric solar concentration ratio, thermoelectric figure of merit, and cold-side inlet fluid temperature. The performance of the B-HSTEG is compared with the V-HSTEG system using two heat transfer fluids: water and Therminol VP-1. The maximum electrical efficiency of the B-HSTEG and V-HSTEG is estimated to be 12.2 and 15.6\% (ZT = 3) with a corresponding thermal efficiency of about 61.9 and 60.3\%, respectively. Overall, this paper provides a systematic performance analysis of HSTEG systems. © 2016 Taylor &amp; Francis Group, LLC.</p>
