We study bidding by anchor investors in a two-stage initial public offering (IPO) process and document a negative, causal relation between allocation to anchor investors and underpricing. We find that anchor investors are likely to invest in hard-to-place offerings characterized by valuation uncertainty. We also document a positive relation between allocation to reputed anchor investors and returns up to lock-up expiration. Our evidence provides support for information revelation and targeting specific investors’ theories of book building. Anchor-backed IPOs earn superior returns mainly due to monitoring. Who bids in an IPO seems to matter just as particular types of bids do. © 2018 Financial Management Association International

The world-class university discourse: Disentangling the conflict between efficiency and world class-ness

The challenge of bringing down the high total dissolved solids (TDS) in raw tannery effluent up-to or below discharge standards, and making it reusable should be dealt sustainably. Thus, in order to tackle this challenge, the authors, in this paper, discuss about a closed loop integrated system using the philosophy of a sustainable industrial ecosystem design. In the closed loop tertiary treatment technology, the Reverse Osmosis (RO) reject evaporates in the poly house evaporator, leaving behind a salt collection/sediment bearing 14\% moisture content, consisting primarily of 79 ppm phosphorus and 40\% organic matter, which in turn is very useful for the compost. This approach of closed loop value chain is very unique and relevant in the present context for the leather industry. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Closed loop value chain to achieve sustainable solution for tannery effluent

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide the top ten reasons of process improvement projects termination or failure to Lean and Six Sigma professionals and researchers. Design/methodology/approach: The top ten reasons of process improvement projects termination or failure are based on literature, interaction of authors with Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belts, consultants, practitioners and trainers on various topics of Lean, Six Sigma, general quality management and continuous improvement along several years’ experience of the authors. Findings: The top ten reasons in our opinion include lack of commitment and support from top management; poor communication practices; incompetent team; inadequate training and learning; faulty selection of process improvement methodology and its associated tools/techniques; inappropriate rewards and recognition system/culture; scope creepiness; sub-optimal team size and composition; inconsistent monitoring and control; and resistance to change. Research limitations/implications: The top ten reasons mentioned in this study are based on only literature and authors’ opinion. The authors of this paper have been pursuing a global study to critically evaluate the reasons behind process improvement projects failure based on a case-study approach. Originality/value: The chief operations officers and senior executives of various businesses can use these top ten reasons to develop project failure risk mitigation strategies and save significant cash-savings associated with such project terminations or failures in some other cases. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Top ten reasons for process improvement project failures

ZnO nanoparticles were developed by 1:2 ratios of Zinc sulphate heptahydrate and Sodium hydroxide by using precipitation method. The structure, morphology of ZnO nanoparticles were investigated by using X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. X-Ray Diffraction confirms the formation and average crystallite size of ZnO nanoparticles. Scanning Electron Microscopy studies shows the ZnO nanoparticles were in spherical in structure. ZnO nanoparticles were used in different ratios along with conventional finishing formulations and coated on the leather surface. The performance properties such as flexing resistance were evaluated. Application of ZnO nanoparticles in leather finishing showed significant improvement in overall performance properties than conventional finishing formulations. XRD confirms the formation of ZnO nanoparticles (wurtzite structure) at 36.31° (101) plane and the particles size was in the range of 34 nm. SEM image shows that the particles are in the spherical structure wheras EDAX investigate the stoichiometry and chemical purity of the samples to confirm the presence of zinc and oxygen. Optimum quantity up to 2-5 g/L of the season of ZnO nanoparticle is desirable for upgrading the value of leathers by improving the flexing resistance (wet & dry) properties significantly in PU top coat dispersions in finishing formulations. © 2019 VGCT.

Enhancing performance properties of conventional leather finishing topcoat by incorporating metal oxide based formulations

Purpose: It is essential to track the development of resource and pollution intensive industries such as textile, leather, pharmaceutical, etc., under burgeoning pressure of environmental compliance. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the progress of Indian leather industry in terms of individual factors and total factor productivity. Design/methodology/approach: This study applies and examines the various concepts of productivity such as labor productivity, capital productivity, material productivity and energy productivity. Further, it assesses and compares the performance of Indian leather industry in Tamil Nadu (TN), West Bengal (WB) and Uttar Pradesh (UP) based on productivity analysis, spatial variations determinants in productivity and technology closeness ratio. Findings: The findings suggest that as per the productivity analysis, WB leather clusters have performed remarkably better in terms of partial factor productivity and technical efficiency (TE), followed by TN and UP. This can be attributed to shifting of leather cluster of WB to a state-of art leather complex with many avenues for resource conservation. Further, the findings reveal that the firm size and partial factor productivities have significant positive correlation with TE which supports technological theory of the firm. Practical implications: The results of this study can be useful for the policy makers associated with the Indian leather industry especially to design interventions to support capacity building at individual firm level as well as cluster level to enhance the efficiency and productivity of overall industry. Social implications: The findings also support the resource dependence theory of firm according to which the larger size firms should reflect on resource conservation practices, for instance the concept of prevention is better than cure based upon 3R (reduce, recycle and reuse) principles. Originality/value: The paper gives an explanation of the productivity in the leather industry in terms of its factor productivity and TE. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.

An empirical study on productivity analysis of Indian leather industry

Most digital enterprises begin as technology start-ups offering niche services, and then evolve into digital platforms providing a range of services. Against the backdrop of almost non-existent logistic and supply chain infrastructure, weak regulatory framework, low penetration of smartphones and Internet, low consumer confidence and trust on online transactions, digital entrepreneurs in developing countries literally have to build the platform ecosystem along with their organization. In this paper, we use institutional theory as a lens to trace the emergence and evolution of digital platforms in India. We posit that digital platforms are emerging organizational fields embodying new network logics with algorithms and technology-mediated interactions playing a central role in creating value. In particular, we take the case of Ola, an online cab aggregator from India to illustrate that digital platforms as organizational field evolve through three phases of (a) innovation introduction, (b) mobilization and (c) structuration. In the first phase, the organizational field characteristics are consequences of activities undertaken to raise cognitive legitimacy and respond to competitive forces. In the second phase, a mix of coercive and mimetic forces shape the institutional field resulting in increase in socio-political legitimacies. In the third phase, the process of structuration sets in as isomorphic forces become more normative. The theoretical framework developed in this paper contributes to extant information system research by putting forth that the characteristics of emerging organizational field are shaped by the interplay between the responses of the focal organization to isomorphic forces, and the actions taken by it to establish cognitive and socio-political legitimacies. Empirically the study is on digital platforms located in a large developing country with very high potential for online transactions but relatively low penetration of Internet and smartphones. Conceptualizing organizational field as digital platforms enables making sense of the changing business landscape, and examine issues of sustainability and legitimacy. © 2019 Mukerji & Roy.

Opportunities and challenges in development: Essays for Sarmila Banerjee

This research aims at recycling of the leather industry solid waste, chrome shaving, into shoe components, such as outsole and insole material. Chrome shaving waste from the leather industry was used for making shoe soles by mixing with rubber and inorganic nanoparticles. Isoprene and Ethylene propylene monomer (EPDM) rubbers were used for this purpose. Various combinations of rubber, nanoparticle and chrome shaving waste were studied to get the desired characteristics of soling material. The prepared shoe soles were characterized for physico-mechanical behaviours like hardness, density, abrasion resistance and tensile strength, and compared with those of the rubber-based soling material available commercially. The shoe sole prepared using a combination of the isoprene and EPDM (1:1) rubber along with chrome shaving waste and kaolinite/silica nanoparticles showed physico-mechanical characteristics very close to the commercial soling material with higher value of percentage elongation. Hence, an efficient use of the fibrous chrome shaving and trimming wastes from leather industry in sole making would avoid the environmental problem, and could be a source of sustainable value-creation. © 2019 VGCT.
