Learning outcomes: Leraning outcomes are as follows: demonstrating how companies in the Indian market are using competitive advertising; giving participants an overview of the regulatory framework for advertising in India; highlighting the complexities arising out of the multiplicity of advertising regulations and institutions in India; appreciating the legal and ethical perspectives of advertisements and self-regulation; and evaluating the stance taken by both the parties in this particular case to develop multi-stakeholder perspective. Case overview/Synopsis: A recent advertisement by international conglomerate Hindustan Unilever Limited was severely criticized for insulting Indian values by Baba Ramdev, promoter of India's largest Ayurvedic Company selling Indian indigenous and natural alternate medicinal products. It was in a complete reversal of the scenario between 2015 and 2018 when other Indian consumer goods companies complained against advertisements released by Patanjali. Indian fast moving consumer goods sector is witnessing a trend of competitive advertising in which companies are downplaying and criticizing the competitors. Though quite old, this trend caught momentum when Patanjali Ayurved Limited, a new player in the market, started advertising aggressively in 2015–2016. It resulted in many complaints by the aggrieved parties in the industry bodies and different courts of law in India. A part of the confusion comes from the diversity of advertising regulations across different Indian platforms and the absence of a clearly defined institutional framework for resolving such disputes. Consequently, most such disputes land up in the court of law in India. The case study builds an understanding of the legal framework within which companies are governed for brand promotions and creates a contextual ethical dilemma to drive the discourse on advertising through self-regulation in India. Patanjali Ayurved Limited: role reversal in competitive advertising

Over the years, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has become one of the important and powerful tools for every professional sector due to its continuous evolution. The constant evolution of innovative broadband communication services as well as the conjunction of telecommunication and computers have opened up several ways for advancing different businesses and their processes. In addition to this, many researchers have emphasized the benefits of ICT in the area of Human Resource Management (HRM). Especially, these advanced technologies transformed the recruitment process that used to be done, making the overall process highly efficient. However, there is limited research that analyzes the degree of impact of ICT on the HRM functions particularly recruitment. Hence, to fill this literature gap, this research paper has attempted to study how ICT impacts the dynamics and performance of the recruitment process in the petroleum & gas industry of India by using Multiple Regression Analysis. The data was collected through questionnaires from 501 respondents working in different domains in petroleum & gas companies operating in India. The results obtained in the study indicate that the ICT makes a significant and positive impact on the recruitment process which ultimately contributes in improving the performance of the whole organization. Earlier, HR staff had to do the recruitment related activities manually and had to keep huge records in hard copies and make data entry manually which was very tedious as well as time consuming but now due to adoption of ICT in almost every organization worldwide, have reduced their overall costs, efforts and time. This paper demonstrates the effective use of ICT in the recruitment process of large-scale organizations for improving their overall performance. This study tries to help and motivate the organizations to continue adopting advanced ICT for improving the performance of the recruitment process in the organization and get the desired benefits. © 2022 IEEE.

Impact of Information &amp; Communication Technologies (ICT) on Recruitment Process of Petroleum &amp; Gas Sector in India

We undertake a case study on the SHIKSHA initiative in Uttar Pradesh in Northern India to understand how impactful the technology-integrated pedagogy through public–private partnerships (PPP) in education has been on the learning outcomes of students. A content analysis to understand the processes adopted by the SHIKSHA initiative is attempted. The digitized curriculum developed is found to be contextualized in accordance with the background of students, which can be aligned with constructivist learning theory. We also attempt a quantitative analysis to estimate the impact of these pedagogical practices on learning outcomes. The analysis finds that the average scores of schools with SHIKSHA interventions are higher by 58 percentage points. Also, under SHIKSHA, a 15-day period was given to the students for revision of the courses with the active participation of the teachers. The average scores after these revisions record an improvement as compared to the average scores before revisions. The paper suggests that the digitization of content by the government or through PPPs can help boost effective learning. Technology-integrated Pedagogy, Learning Outcomes and Retention: Can Public–Private Partnerships Play a Role in Primary Education in India?

This study investigates the relationship between the fulfillment of epistemic, diversive curiosity of employees in the workplace, and their work performance. We conceptualize the relationship in two modes: direct and mediated by intellectual stimulation and workplace loneliness. Drawing on social exchange theory, we argue that, in the absence of intellectual stimulation provided by motivational leaders to their followers, it could be generated by curiosity-fulfilling social exchanges among like-minded employees. We also argue that the nonfulfillment of curiosity could give rise to workplace loneliness, causing performance to decline. We further view the relationships in light of two moderating influences: employee self-efficacy and organizational panoptic surveillance. Based on a field study of 537 employees in 17 software development projects in a multinational firm, we found empirical support for the mediated relationships and the moderating influences. However, the direct association was not supported. We discuss the implications of our findings for organizational theory and practice. © 2022

“Holy curiosity of inquiry”: An investigation into curiosity and work performance of employees

Learning outcomes: The purpose of this case is to expose readers to the dilemma of expanding domestically or internationally and simultaneously taking key decisions while expanding the business to the international markets. It could be a foundational case for understanding international expansion and growth strategies. After the case analysis, students would be able to: • understand the potential of the domestic market and the factors affecting the international expansion; • evaluate the various methods to enter an international market; • identify the challenges of expanding a business into emerging markets such as India; • analyze the various growth and expansion strategies in an emerging market such as India; and • assess the online promotion strategies in an emerging market. Case overview/synopsis: NIVA, The Satin Collection, is a manufacturer and distributor of a luxury collection of silk and satin products. Founded in 2020, NIVA is based in Dubai with more than 1,000 customers. The products include silk bedding, silk sleepwear, fashion accessories and reusable satin masks, and they are made-to-order, custom-made and tailored locally in Dubai. Currently, all the operations are run and managed by the company’s founder, Purva. The only operation which is outsourced is the stitching process. The company is completely operating online and is currently promoting products only through social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Purva is planning to expand her business. The two options are extending her existing operations in the UAE and expanding to other emerging markets, starting with India. Purva needs to decide on a suitable internationalization strategy to decide whether it is the right decision to enter the Indian market, including an entry and promotion strategy in her target market. In addition, she needs to decide whether to continue with NIVA’s current business model in India. There might also be additional possible challenges for NIVA in entering the Indian market. NIVA: business expansion dilemma

Purpose: The study explores extant knowledge on the nature of the relationship between internal and external corporate governance mechanisms, particularly board characteristics and audit quality, respectively, while also investigating how the relationship varies across geographies. Design/methodology/approach: The extant knowledge is synthesized using a meta-analysis, which is conducted using a sample of 56 empirical studies from publications of varying grades. The studies span over 25 years (1996–2021) and cover 147 empirical samples (343,787 firm-year observations) across more than 20 countries. The dependent variable is audit fees, and the independent variable captures 12 different measures of board characteristics. Findings: Overall, the results reveal a positive association between board characteristics and audit fees, indicating complementarity between governance mechanisms. Effect size analysis shows board characteristics, like size and independence, are positively associated with audit fees. However, heterogeneity is noted for some characteristics, and further analysis by geography (developed vs emerging countries) explains the heterogeneity. Practical implications: This study helps multiple stakeholders like firms, shareholders, boards, regulators and policymakers in designing and strengthening governance frameworks. Social implications: Both governance and auditing literature benefit from identifying specific board characteristics that drive audit quality consistently across different institutional settings and samples. Heterogeneity analysis helps improve the understanding of contradictions documented in prior literature. Originality/value: This meta-analysis is the first to explore the interplay between internal and external corporate governance mechanisms, with a focus on board characteristics and audit quality. The study provides valuable insights on how different governance mechanisms influence each other while highlighting, for the first time, how the interaction between governance mechanisms varies by a country's level of development. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Board characteristics and demand for audit quality: a meta-analysis

The COVID-19 outbreak has impacted urban transportation mobility throughout the world. In this paper, we investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the urban mobility network’s structural characteristics. We contribute to the literature by discussing how various community areas in the city traffic network are impacted by the pandemic. We analyze a large dataset on urban mobility from the city of Chicago and derive various insights. Our analysis of the mobility network structure is important because a better understanding of such networks can help control the spread of the disease by reducing interactions among individuals. We find that the pandemic significantly impacted the structure of the mobility network of taxis in Chicago. Our study reveals some important pointers for policymakers that could potentially aid in developing urban transportation policies during the pandemic. © 2022 Mukherjee, Jain. Impact of COVID-19 on the mobility patterns: An investigation of taxi trips in Chicago

Despite large-scale financial development and banks being the most important credit source globally, banking continues to be plagued by asymmetric information. This uncertainty makes credit risk assessment decisions complex and expensive. In this context, we show how discretionary borrower characteristics, such as the borrower’s network (which can co-insure), help mitigate risk and reduce costs by altering lending decisions. The literature on loan pricing remains focused on objective credit scoring models, while the network literature remains empirical, and borrower based. We fill this void by being the first to theoretically model the lender’s internal decision-making problem when borrowers display discretionary default risk-mitigating attributes such as network strength. We find that the interest rate reduces as the network strength increases. As constraints set in and borrowing becomes more competitive, banks rely even more on network information to parse out better borrowers. Finally, banks substitute monitoring effort with network strength for a more feasible interest rate. This will increase lending, even to borrowers outside the banks’ purview earlier. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Mitigating credit risk: modelling and optimizing co-insurance in loan pricing

Individuality matters. While information technology (IT) is important, more critical for the success of IS functions in an organization are its people, their values, attitudes, norms, and behavior. There are differences among IT professionals not only at the organizational level but also at the global level. Using data collected from more than 10,000 IT employees in 37 countries under the World IT Project, this study examines some fundamental issues of IT workers from a global perspective. While there are differences, we find that almost universally, nine individual issues are important across many countries, and they are interrelated in a similar manner. IT employees in some countries maintain stronger social bonds among themselves than those in others, which provide them with the necessary social capital to utilize in times of high work exhaustion, environmental dynamism and insecurity, as well as their efforts to change jobs. In difficult situations, professional self-efficacy of the workers stands them in good stead. A significant number of IT employees perceive excessive work overload that upsets the balance between their lives at home and workplace demands. Nevertheless, an intellectually stimulating and well-balanced work environment ensures job satisfaction for a significant number of IT employees in many countries. © 2020 by the Association for Information Systems.

Individuality Matters: A World View of Individual Issues of IT Professionals

Purpose: Limited previous studies about Vietnamese returned migrant workers reviewed that a relatively high rate of migrants returned home before their contract ended. This paper aims to explore how the decisions to return were made under social lenses. Design/methodology/approach: This paper analyses data obtained through in-depth interviews of contract workers who had worked in Taiwan with a focus on Phu Tho province in Vietnam. Findings: The authors followed O’Reilly’s (2012) adaption of Practice theory in migration research to examine a group of Vietnamese labour migrants returning from Taiwan. Under this theory, external and internal structures are the two divisions of the social environment. The authors identified external structures that might enable or constraint migrant’s mobility. When negotiating internal structures, Vietnamese women might end their contract early in response to family obligations. Originality/value: The findings provide insights into how women make their decisions when to return, which may contribute to a better understanding of how to assist women engaged in transnational labour migration. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.
