Managing patents is a core issue in the intellectual property management (IPM) of the firms. It entails two important activities: the patenting of new innovations and the renewal of patents. With the research on renewal data gaining momentum, this paper tries to study the renewal of patents in the pharma sector in India. Adopting a unique approach of studying both active and ceased patents of non-resident applicants in India, with the aid of descriptive methods and statistical tools as SPSS following trends, has been found. Business firms are the dominant patentees and single inventorship an emerging trend in India. While renewal patterns are quite applicant category specific, grant period is independent of the applicant category. In case of the patents category (ceased or active), maintenance duration is independent of the number of inventors but effective life of the patents varies with category of patents. The higher propensity to patent and maintenance show linkage with specific technology fields and the portfolio size. Copyright © 2015 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

A study of the maintenance of patents by the non-residents in India: Insights for strategic management of patents

As financial investors in portfolio companies, venture capital (VC) firms are expected to add value through continuous monitoring and sustained involvement. Such an effort is expected to give VC-backed IPO firms (VC IPOs) an edge over those IPO firms not backed by VCs. We examine such value additions use a comparative analysis of operating and stock performance data of VC IPOs against three groups of non-VC POs. We identified a set of 92 VC IPOs and 182 non VC IPOs. The 182 non-VC IPOs were further subdivided into industry and size groups. While Wilcoxon tests were used to compare the medians of operating and stock performance, panel data regression models were used to establish the impact of VC on those differential performances. We find that the medians of VC IPOs on most operating performance parameters are better than non-VC IPO groups. But the relational tests could not attribute the better performance to VC influence. We conclude that this could be indicative of VCs' superior ability to identify promising ventures and push them toward their maximum potential. This study is one of the pioneering efforts in exploring VC value creation in the Indian context. This exploratory work sheds light on important functional information characteristics of the system of research collaboration by examining large-scale topological structures of co-authorship networks, created through the affiliative ties of scholarly articles published by collaborating researchers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. The model adopted in this work to understand the underlying collaboration system incorporates the strengths of collaborative coupling among the researchers. The questions we examine in this work are as follows: (1) What new functional characteristics emerge when combined structural effects of collaborative coupling and large-scale connectivity exist in the networks? (2) What information does a specific closeness distribution of collaborating researchers convey with regard to the flow of knowledge through collaborative activities? (3) What is the temporal dynamics of large-scale structure formation in these networks? The work involves a comparative study of these characteristics using the networks of two countries: India and the US. Functional information characteristics of large-scale research collaboration: network measures and implications

Structural cohesion, hierarchy, holes, and percolating clusters share a complementary existence in many social networks. Although the individual influences of these attributes on the structure and function of a network have been analyzed in detail, a more accurate picture emerges in proper perspective and context only when research methods are employed to integrate their collective impacts on the network. In a major research project, we have undertaken this examination. This paper presents an extract from this project, using a global network assessment of these characteristics. We apply our methods to analyze the collaboration networks of a subset of researchers in India through their coauthored papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings in management science, including related areas of information technology and economics. We find the Indian networks to be currently suffering from a high degree of fragmentation, which severely restricts researchers' long-rage connectivities in the networks. Comparisons are made with networks of a similar sample of researchers working in the United States. © 2014 ASIS&T.
