Orthotropic composite materials exhibits higher specific strength and stiffness; hence extensively used in various industrial and engineering applications such as aerospace, armored and automobile etc. During their service life, these critical engineering components are subjected to thermo-elastic loads. These loading conditions generate local thermal stress concentration near the crack/voids present in the structures, which leads to sudden failure of engineering components. Therefore, the study of crack tip stress field under thermo-elastic loading becomes very important to understand the effect of lamina orientation on the strength of orthotropic composite components. The presented work deals with XFEM formulation and implementation to simulate 3-D orthotropic fracture problems under thermo-elastic loading environment. In XFEM based formulation, meshed topology does not exhibit any geometrical discontinuity. All desired discontinuity can be captured by enriching primary variable approximations by additional mathematical functions (Heaviside and crack front enrichment functions). These enrichment functions are derived from theoretical background of the problem under consideration. The crack surface element enriched by Heaviside function whereas, crack front elements treated by orthotropic crack front asymptotic functions. Mixed mode stress intensity factors are computed by domain based interaction integral approach. Few example of 3-D orthotropic thermo-elastic crack problem is presented to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of proposed method. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Thermo-elastic failure simulation of 3-D orthotropic composites by XFEM

Solar Energy is a clean and boundless energy source and the worldwide solar market demand is increasing for industrial and domestic purposes. The purpose of this paper is to show the comparison of Stochastic Method(Genetic Algorithm) over derivative methods. A mathematical development [3] is provided for the extraction of Solar Panel equivalent circuit parameters from datasheet values. The analytical approach is selected for the mathematical development as the initial-point vital for proper evaluation of the Parameters of the double diode Model of PV cells. And thus using Evolutionary technique to extract the values of the parameters, a valid comparison has been presented between the numerical approaches and the Evolutionary Algorithms. © 2015 IEEE.

Parameter estimation of double diode photo-voltaic module

Network on Chip (NoC) architecture needed secured data processing and routing in multicore system on Chip (SoC). Sometime it becomes very difficult to provide secured network routing for physically access network. The performance of NoC architecture depends on switching techniques, routing scheme and topological structure. The paper proposed the chip implementation of the new technique of securing data in NoC routers. Many algorithms have been anticipated already for secured NoC routing but limited to their key size and block size. In the paper, NoC architecture is integrated with modified TACIT security algorithm on Virtex-5 FPGA. The key generation scheme is considered based on Hash function and distributed under 4 Hash function (4H) scheme. The greatest advantage of TACIT security algorithm is that the block size and key size both can be of 'n' bit. The design is developed for 'n' bit with the help of VHDL programming language in Xilinx ISE 14.2 and Modelsim 10.1 b software and synthesized for 512 and 1024 bit of block size on Virtex-5 FPGA. The design is optimized with the help of device utilization summary, timing parameters, maximum frequency and memory support. © 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Secured Network on Chip (NoC) architecture and routing with modified tacit cryptographic technique

Telecommunication networks are based on crossbar switching structure. Non-blocking crossbar switching structure is used crosspoint switch fabric ICs. High performance non-blocking matrixes cross point switches are use to avoid the congested path to the output, and eliminate the bandwidth problem of one at a time. Telecommunication switching uses multistage crossbar switching to overcome the limitations of individual chips or boards. The research paper focuses on the FPGA implementation of 64 x 64 three stage telecommunication switching. The generic architecture scheme is followed to implement 64 x 64 three stage network configuration, with 64 inlets and 64 outlets as cluster size. The design is developed with the help of Xilinx ISE 14.2, software, synthesized on Virtex- 5 FPGA, and function simulation is carried out in Modelsim 10.1b student edition. Design and FPGA synthesis of three stage telecommunication switching in HDL environment

Battery powered wireless sensor networks (WSN) although can be installed at reduced cost but due to their high powerconsumption and corresponding need for regular battery replacement has made wireless sensor network difficult andcostly to maintain. Energy harvesting is the process by which energy readily available from the environment, and iscaptured and converted into usable electrical energy. Combining WSN nodes with energy harvesters one can approach to even a'Greener' world. This evaluation will make the revolution towards long-lived large scale sensor networks. Thechallenge is in the WSN node integration with an energy harvester, power management, energystorage, communications, and range of sensor types. This paper briefly discusses the trends in energy harvestingtechnologies used for WSN. It also reviews various energy harvesting technologies currently available or underdevelopment. © 2015 IEEE.

Recent trends in energy harvesting for green wireless sensor networks

Password Hashing, a technique commonly implemented by a server to protect passwords of clients, by performing a one-way transformation on the password, turning it into another string called the hashed password. In this paper, we introduce a secure password hashing framework Rig which is based on secure cryptographic hash functions. It provides the flexibility to choose different functions for different phases of the construction. The design of the scheme is very simple to implement in software and is flexible as the memory parameter is independent of time parameter (no actual time and memory trade-off) and is strictly sequential (difficult to parallelize) with comparatively huge memory consumption that provides strong resistance against attackers using multiple processing units. It supports client-independent updates, i.e., the server can increase the security parameters by updating the existing password hashes without knowing the password. Rig can also support the server relief protocol where the client bears the maximum effort to compute the password hash, while there is minimal effort at the server side. We analyze Rig and show that our proposal provides an exponential time complexity against the low-memory attack. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Rig: A simple, secure and flexible design for password hashing

Slurry erosion is a complex process with number of interacting variables (operating and material parameters). We study the interaction between erodent concentration and impingement angle using experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. Experiments were performed using a high velocity slurry erosion test rig at a constant velocity with dilute slurries of water and sand particles. Concentration of sand in water was varied from 0.01wt% (100ppm) to 0.5wt% (5000ppm) at three sample orientations (30°, 60° and 90°). Six different targets, three bulk materials (aluminum, cast iron, and stainless steel) and three thermal sprayed coatings (Ni+20, 40, and 60wt% of Al2O3) were used for slurry erosion tests. Experimental results showed a significant interaction between erodent concentration and impingement angle. The concentration variation showed larger influence on erosion rate for sample held normal to the slurry jet compared to glancing angle. The degree of interaction was different for different materials. CFD simulations showed higher particle-to-particle interactions for sample at glancing angle compared to that at normal angle. This probably explains the low contribution of concentration variation at glancing angle compared to the normal angle. Further, the effect of concentration on erosion rates was also influenced by the restitution coefficient (function of material and impact parameters). For a high restitution coefficient materials, the change in slurry concentration showed minimum effect on erosion rate compared with low restitution coefficient materials. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Interplay between erodent concentration and impingement angle for erosion in dilute water-sand flows

Slurry erosion is a degrading phenomenon usually observed in machineries dealing with particle-laden fluid such as hydro power plants, ship propellers, pump impellers, valves, and connecting pipes. The low erosion resistance of commonly employed structural materials prompts the use of different surface modification techniques. Among several types of surface modification techniques, thermal spraying has achieved a significant recognition worldwide due to its versatile nature. In this chapter, slurry erosion behavior of thermal sprayed coatings has been discussed with special emphasis on the contribution of different coating related parameter. It has been observed that microstructure play an important role in determining the slurry erosion performance of thermal spray coatings. Different microstructural features such as splat boundaries, pores, un-melted particles, and cracks are detrimental for the thermal spray coatings exposed to erosive environment. A parameter useful for identification of primary erosion mechanism for thermal sprayed coatings is also discussed. © 2015, IGI Global. All rights reserved.

Coupled thermal-electrical analysis of overhead electric transmission wires made up of carbon nanostructured (CNS) composites

In this paper, an effort has been made to study the recently developed pseudospark discharge-based 20 kV/200 A plasma cathode electron gun by using 3-D particle-in-cell simulation code VORPAL for discharge current analysis to validate the experiments. The experimental and simulation studies have been performed at different working pressures between 50 and 100 mTorr and at different applied voltages between 10 and 20 kV. Argon has been used as the working gas. The temporal behavior of the discharge current, discharge voltage, potential distribution within the hollow cathode region and the electron plasma density buildup has been analyzed from the simulations. The experiments have been performed to measure the dynamic nature of the discharge voltage and discharge current at different operating conditions. An agreement between the simulated and experimental results has been obtained well within 10 % for the discharge currents at different applied voltages, qualifying the design. © 2015, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science.
