We live in an era of data explosion that necessitates the discovery of novel out-of-core techniques. The I/O bottleneck has to be dealt with in developing out-of-core methods. The Parallel Disk Model (PDM) has been proposed to alleviate the I/O bottleneck. Sorting is an important problem that has ubiquitous applications. Several asymptotically optimal PDM sorting algorithms are known and now the focus has shifted to developing algorithms for problem sizes of practical interest. In this paper we present several novel algorithms for sorting on the PDM that take only a small number of passes through the data. We also present a generalization of the zero-one principle for sorting. A shuffling lemma is presented as well. These lemmas should be of independent interest for average case analysis of sorting algorithms as well as for the analysis of randomized sorting algorithms.

PDM sorting algorithms that take a small number of passes

The Parallel Disks Model (PDM) has been proposed to alleviate the I/O bottleneck that arises in the processing of massive data sets. Sorting has been extensively studied on the PDM model due to the fundamental nature of the problem. Several randomized algorithms are known for sorting. Most of the prior algorithms suffer from undue complications in memory layouts, implementation, or lack of tight analysis. In this paper we present a simple randomized algorithm that sorts in optimal time with high probablity and has all the desirable features for practical implementation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

A simple optimal randomized algorithm for sorting on the PDM

This paper discusses two different modes of breakdown in the reverse-biased I-V characteristics observed generically in bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) with the base emitter shorted, showing an erratic behavior, in the presence of large displacement currents. Experimental observations related to reverse-biased collector junctions of BJTs, that exhibit two different states of breakdown when a fast voltage ramp is applied are presented. Numerical simulations of the transient behavior of avalanche injection in p n- n+ structures show that two very close breakdown states coexist. The mechanisms leading to the erratic behavior of the second breakdown are discussed. The jittery nature of the breakdown is attributed to the delay associated with the buildup of the electric field across the n- n+ junction. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

A hybrid information extraction (IE) framework based on geographical term detection approach has been developed to extract geographical information from an unrestricted Hindi text The relationship between geographical entities extracted with the adjacent text is shown graphically so that information about these entities can be related. The system, a combination of statistically and linguistically motivated techniques, identifies single geographical names and multiple geographical names as well. The method is applied on Hindi language text, but the approach can be adapted for other languages also. The paper presents some experiments illustrating the accuracy of the method. The system being developed is in a prototype stage and will be extended to include relation mark-up as well. © 2005 IEEE.

Hybrid framework for information extraction for geographical terms in hindi language texts

Thermal non-destructive testing (TNDT) is a whole field and non-contact technique for defect detection The present work describes a variant of TNDT for subsurface defect detection based on frequency modulated thermal wave imaging (FMTWI) Use is made of the frequency dependence of thermal diffusion length, to achieve entire depth scanning of a sample in one run This novel technique overcomes some of the drawbacks associated with traditional pulse and lock-in thermography. Experimental results are presented in support.

Implementation of frequency-modulated thermal wave imaging for non-destructive sub-surface defect detection

The work presented herein can broadly be categorized as a fluid-structure interaction problem. The response of a circular cylindrical structure subjected to cross flow is examined using the finite element method for both the liquid and the structure domains. The cylindrical tube is mounted elastically at the ends and is free to move under the action of the unsteady flow-induced forces. The fluid is considered to be partially compressible and viscous. The flow field is solved using a finite element method applied to the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. The cylinder motion is modeled using a five-degrees of freedom generalized shell element structural dynamics model. The numerical simulations of the response of the calandria tubes/pressure tubes, adjuster rod and shut-off rod of a nuclear reactor are presented. A few typical results are presented to assess the accuracy of the developed modules. Copyright © 2005 by ASME.

A fluid-solid finite element method for the analysis of reactor safety problems

In this paper, we have shown that the fuzzy-rough set attribute reduction algorithm [Jenson, R., Shen, Q., 2002. Fuzzy-rough sets for descriptive dimensionality reduction. In: Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, FUZZ-IEEE'02, May 12-17, pp. 29-34] is not convergent on many real datasets due to its poorly designed termination criteria; and the computational complexity of the algorithm increases exponentially with increase in the number of input variables and in multiplication with the size of data patterns. Based on natural properties of fuzzy t-norm and t-conorm, we have put forward the concept of fuzzy-rough sets on compact computational domain, which is then utilized to improve the computational efficiency of FRSAR algorithm. Speed up factor as high as 622 have been achieved with this concept with improved accuracy. We also restructure the algorithm with efficient termination criteria to achieve the convergence on all the datasets and to improve the reliability of selected set of features. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. On fuzzy-rough sets approach to feature selection

In the present study, an effort has been made to study the air quality at 8 locations in Allahabad city in terms of concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxides (SO2), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and respirable dust particulate matter (RPM). The studies have been carried out during normal traffic flow times. The study also focuses on some key air pollution problems arising from vehicular pollution. It examines the utility of an air pollution index (API) for tackling air pollution problems. The approach for the selection of air pollution monitoring stations, its monitoring programme, data analysis and results are discussed. The Oak Ridge air quality index (ORAQI) was used to evaluate the relative ranking of overall air quality at different study locations of the city. © 2005 - Kalpana Corporation.

Assessment of vehicular pollution on urban air quality - An Indian case study

The advent of e-commerce has brought about a radical change in the process of auctions. This has given bidders flexibility to try and get best possible deals by participating in multiple auctions. This has also provided sellers with the opportunity of unlawfully bidding (skill bidding) in their auctions with the sole purpose of increasing their payoffs. This paper looks at the concept of shill bidding and also introduces another concept (mole bidding) through which seller can increase their payoffs. The proposed solution is based on software agents. This paper shows a high level decision making framework for sellers using mole agent (automated alias for a mole bidder) to bid across various overlapping English auctions with varying start and end times. © 2005 IEEE.
