The fast-growing department of English at Shiv Nadar University has already begun to attract some of the finest academics from the country and abroad. Over the last few years, the department has combined superb research and publication outputs with a commitment to thinking about how “the literary” may be constantly refined and reinvented in our curricula and classrooms. In our research as in our teaching, we are committed to innovating without ever giving up rigor.
The Department of English at Shiv Nadar University came into existence in July 2011, when the university was founded. Since then, it has grown exponentially. At present it is home to a highly qualified faculty, undergraduate majors, and graduate students, handpicked from some of the finest institutions in India and abroad.
The English Department at Shiv Nadar is quickly emerging as one of the best in the country. As an academic space with a reputation for encouraging research, the department has, over the years, attracted senior academics from institutions such as the universities of Delhi, Pune, and Pittsburg. The department has also attracted relatively younger colleagues with distinguished academic credentials which include PhDs from the University of East Anglia, Oxford, Trinity College, Dublin, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and EFLU, Hyderabad.
Members of the English Department have held visiting positions in several universities including the Open University UK, Anglia Ruskin University, the Institute of British and American Studies Dresden, New York University and Jadavpur University. Department members have also won some of the most prestigious fellowships in India and abroad. These include the Tagore Chair, IAAS Shimla, the ICCR Rotating Chair, The Eberhard Karls University, The Rockefeller Residency at the Bellagio Center, The Leverhulme Visiting Fellowship, The Andrew Mellon fellowship at the Huntington Library .
The English Department offers a range of courses aimed at combining intellectual rigor with continuous innovation for its B.A. and M.A. programs. Proposals for prospective PhDs are considered throughout the year and formal admission to the PhD program is offered in August and January every year.
