BIPOLARIS SPICIFERA AND EXSEROHILUM ROSTRATUM CAUSING LEAF SPOTS OF EUCALYPTUS TERETICORNIS—NEW RECORD FROM INDIA

A series of studies are reported, including a survey of nurseries and plantations in Kerala before and during the monsoons of 1979-83, in vitro conidial germination, infection of 4-month-old E. grandis seedlings by spraying with a conidial suspension of C. [Calonectria] quinqueseptatum and screening of 8 provenances of E. grandis and 7 provenances of E. tereticornis for susceptibility to a conidial spray of C. quinqueseptatum. Nine species (including Cylindrocladium clavatum, C. scoparium, C. ilicicola, C. parvum, C. floridanum, C. camelliae, C. curvatum and C. [Calonectria] theae) were found to be associated with Eucalyptus spp., causing a complex of damping off, stem canker, leaf and shoot blight in nurseries. In plantations, only leaf spot, leaf blight and shoot dieback were common. Leaf diseases usually began to appear on lower branches indicating infection from the soil. In areas of high humidity, infection could be severe, producing complete defoliation. In younger plantations, where tapioca was cultivated as a taungya crop, infection of leaves and branches was very severe, probably because of the damp microclimate caused by the tapioca. Infection was usually spread by conidia in rain or dew drops. Leaf infection was generally through the epidermis, occasionally through the stomata.

Epidemiology of Cylindrocladium diseases of Eucalyptus

C. cubensis is reported from Kerala (Wynad District) for the first time in 1980 on a 2-yr-old plantation of E. grandis. Its biology and symptoms produced are described. Plots in plantations of E. grandis and E. tereticornis were monitored for 3 yr from 1980 and the occurrence and spread of the canker recorded. The severity of infection varied with location and host species: it was more severe at high alt., where there was high rainfall and in E. grandis. In one plantation of E. grandis, infection was 0.8% in 1980 increasing to 27.5% in 1982. Overall mortality in the state was estimated at 3% of the infected trees. Healthy 2-yr-old saplings were inoculated through a V-shaped cut in the stem and observed at monthly intervals: all developed the disease. Planting resistant provenances is recommended.

A stem canker disease of Eucalyptus caused by Cryphonectria cubensis in Kerala

Occurrence of four disease of foliage viz. two leaf spots, one leaf blight and a web blight caused by Colletotrichum capsici, Cercospora subsessilis, Sderotium rolfsii and Rhizoctonia solani respectively and one each of stem (stem rot by S. rolfsii) and root (wilt by Fusarium solani) are reported for the first time on seedlings of Azadirachta indica from Kerala, India. Leaf spots though widespread did not cause much damage to seedlings, while the other diseases resulted in ca. 20–30 percent mortality, thus affecting the stocking. Seedling diseases of Azadirachta indica in Kerala, India

A review of published material indicates that no serious insect pests have been encountered so far, except for root-feeding termites, which can cause high seedling mortality. Pest problems in Australia and other countries are briefly outlined. The possibilities of problems arising in India from immigration or a shift in the feeding habits of indigenous insects are discussed and the need for quarantine regulations is stressed.

Hydnum subvinosum, a rare parasite on Leucaena leucocephala in India

Seeds of 38 provenances of 15 Eucalyptus spp. (1 provenance of E. acmenioides; 9 of E. camaldulensis; 6 of E. cloeziana; 5 of E. deglupta; 1 each of E. drepanophylla, E. exserta, E. grandis, E. macarthurii, E. maculata, E. microcorys, E. propinqua, E. pyrocarpa and E. resinifera; 4 of E. pilularis; and 4 of E. urophylla) were planted in April 1983 in a nursery in Kerala. Germination percentage, disease incidence and ht. growth were recorded after 10 wk. The pathogens were isolated from infected seedlings and their pathogenicity assessed on 5-wk-old seedlings of E. grandis. Three provenances of E. deglupta (12909, 12976, 12977), E. exserta (13282), E. microcorys (12795), E. propinqua (13321) and E. resinifera (13322) were completely free of infection. The pathogens isolated were C. [Calonectria] quinqueseptatum and Cylindrocladium floridanun (which was frequently associated with E. camaldulensis and E. cloeziana).
