Pests observed in an experimental nursery raised in the Kerala Agricultural University campus, are documented. Out of the seven tree species raised in the nursery, Tectona grandis, Albizia falcataria [Paraserianthes falcataria], Swietenia macrophylla and Ailanthus triphysa suffered greater pest damage. Most damage was caused by leaf feeding and root feeding insects, such as Hyblaea puera, Eligma narcissus and Eurema blanda, the latter causing heavy defoliation of P. falcataria. Chemical control methods using quinalphos, phorate or carbofuran were effective in containing the pests.

Major insect pests of forest trees in North Bihar

Amongst soil-borne diseases of Dalbergia sissoo, damping-off and root rot caused by Fusarium solani f.sp. dalbergiae brings about heavy losses in nurseries. More than 70% loss under natural conditions was recorded during 1991 and 1992 in nurseries in Haryana State, India. In pot experiment, soils with high clay content and less pore space favoured high disease incidence causing 88.9% seedling mortality. Maximum disease incidence of 87.7% was recorded in wet loam soil. Out of the eight fungicides tested against Fusarium solani f.sp. dalbergiae in in vitro and in vivo, Bavistin [carbendazim] and Captaf [captan] proved to be very effective. In soils amended with crop residues and such as bean straw and saw dust, minimum casualty was recorded.

In forestry, availability of healthy seeds is an important factor for raising planting stock on a large-scale. Germinability depends greatly upon seed health, which generally refers to the presence or absence of disease causing micro-organisms. In the present study, seeds of Albizia odoratissima, Lagerstroemia microcarpa, Pterocarpus marsupium and Xylia xylocarpa were distinguished into different categories by dry seed examination. Spermoplane microflora was estimated using standard blotter method utilizing both surface sterilised and non-surface sterilised seeds. The results indicated that at present the main problem faced by forestry seeds is the high incidence of saprophytic fungi. In pathogenicity trials, a large number of microorganisms hitherto known to be saprophytes have shown their pathogenic behaviour to seeds of some of the indigenous tree crops.

Termites play a very important and decisive role in the tropical forest ecosystem. As most species of termites are subterranean, feeding on wood, humus, lichen, etc. their activities in the soil present a number of interesting features including laterization of soil. The large quantities of subsoil brought to the surface during borrowing and mound-building activities evidently seems to increase the rate of percolation of rain water and of aeration of both top and subsoils. Scavenging role of termites in the forest ecosystem also includes incorporation of the dung of herbivores and other game animals into the soil. Notwithstanding the beneficial role of termites, termites are serious pests in forest nurseries and young plantations. Often, plantations of eucalypts and other forest species cannot be successfully raised without taking preventive measures.

FUNGAL PATHOGENS AS POTENTIAL THREAT TO TROPICAL ACACIAS A case study of India

In Kerala, the moist deciduous forests occupy 4010 kmsuperscript 2 of the total forest area of 9400 kmsuperscript 2, which is the abode of many valuable indigenous tree species. However, no information is available on seedling diseases of indigenous tree species and their management. The present study involving four indigenous tree species viz., Albizia odoratissima, Lagerstroemia microcarpa, Pterocarpus marsupium and Xylia xylocarpa indicated that these trees have very few seedling diseases. No disease was detected in A. odoratissima, while a serious damping-off caused by Pythium middletonii was observed in L. microcarpa. Collar rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani and a serious seedling blight caused by Sclerotium rolfsii [Corticium rolfsii] were noticed in P. marsupium, while in X. xylocarpa an uneconomical seedling blight was detected. The management strategies of the above diseases in the nursery are discussed.
