Titanium(ii) solutions, prepared by dissolving titanium wire in triflic acid + HF, contain equimolar quantities of Ti(iv). These preparations react readily with oxidizing species such as VO2+, substituted benzoquinones, and the biguanide complex of Mn(iv). Reactions with excess Ti(ii) yield Ti(iii). Reductions of 1,4-benzoquinones and the Mn(iv) complex are catalyzed by added Ti(iv) but stoichiometry is unaffected. Rate laws for the Ti(iv)-catalyzed reactions are consistent with formation of a Ti II-TiIV complex (Kformation 4 × 10 2 M-1), which, in some cases, also partakes in contributing deprotonated and halogen-catalyzed paths. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Large-scale correlated calculations of linear optical absorption and low-lying excited states of polyacenes: Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian

Endothelial cell junctional adhesion molecule (JAM)-C has been proposed to regulate neutrophil migration. In the current study, we used function-blocking mAbs against human JAM-C to determine its role in human leukocyte adhesion and transendothelial cell migration under flow conditions. JAM-C surface expression in HUVEC was uniformly low, and treatment with inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, DL-1β, or LPS did not increase its surface expression as assessed by FACS analysis. By immunofluorescence microscopy, JAM-C staining showed sparse localization to cell-cell junctions on resting or cytokine-activated HUVEC. Surprisingly, staining of detergent-permeabilized HUVEC revealed a large intracellular pool of JAM-C that showed little colocalization with von Willebrand factor. Adhesion studies in an in vitro flow model showed that functional blocking JAM-C mAb alone had no inhibitory effect on polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) adhesion or transmigration, whereas mAb to ICAM-1 significantly reduced transmigration. Interestingly, JAM-C-blocking mAbs synergized with a combination of PECAM-1, ICAM-1, and CD99-blocking mAbs to inhibit PMN transmigration. Overexpression of JAM-C by infection with a lentivirus JAM-C GFP fusion protein did not increase adhesion or extent of transmigration of PMN or evoke a role for JAM-C in transendothelial migration. These data suggest that JAM-C has a minimal role, if any, in PMN transmigration in this model and that ICAM-1 is the preferred endothelial-expressed ligand for PMN β2 integrins during transendothelial migration. Neutrophil transmigration under shear flow conditions in vitro is junctional adhesion molecule-C independent

The paper deals with integrated pest management (IPM) of a single density-dependent pest affecting a single crop. The model is basically a prey-predator model, predator being the natural enemy of the pest. In addition, it also contains the growth equation of the affected crop. This dynamic model is subjected to biological control in the form of release of additional predators and chemical control in the form of spraying of pesticides. To consider the natural side effect of pesticide on fish living in the soil water, the model is further improved to accommodate the growth equation of the fishes in the soil water. The paper considers the optimal analysis of the model under two control parameters, one is the spraying of pesticide and other one is the release of predators; such optimal analysis under multi-control parameters is completely new of its kind. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

A more realistic approach to pest-management problem

The interrelationship of the host-virus-environment is of critical importance in determining the amount of virus production per insect and its consequences in the overall infection process in insect community. Lower temperature inhibits the virus replication and thus infection does not persist into the system. On the other hand, virus production per insect increases with temperature increase within certain limit, and this increase of virus production brings some unforeseen consequences in the infection dynamics in pest control. We deal the problem by applying non-vulnerability concept on the mathematical model of viral infection that linked up with the temperature-viral developmental model. Using Lyapunov-like function, we determine a range of temperature and show that the system would become endemic and remain in stable situation if temperature could be maintained in this prescribed range, whereas that range depends on other parameters of the system. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Effect of temperature on viral infection and its control: A mathematical approach

In this work, we describe the homo- and hetero-epitaxial growth of hexagonal and cubic MgxZn1-xO thin films on lattice matched substrates of c-Al2O3, ZnO, MgO and SrTiO 3. The crystalline quality, composition and epitaxial nature of the alloy films are obtained by x-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) techniques. The RBS channeling yields are in the range 3-8% for homoepitaxial and hetero-epitaxial thin films. The metal-semiconductor-metal and ultraviolet detectors were fabricated on hexagonal and cubic Mg xZn1-xO thin films and the leakage current and UV-visible rejection ratio are correlated with the epitaxial relationship between the film and substrates. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Homo- and hetero-epitaxial growth of hexagonal and cubic Mg xZn1-x O alloy thin films by pulsed laser deposition technique

The authors performed a systematic study of the structural and electrical properties of Nb:Ti O2 thin films by varying the substrate temperature (TS) and oxygen partial pressure (P O2). Niobium is found to incorporate easily and substitutionally into titanium lattice site as indicated by its low activation energy. By increasing TS, the carrier concentration (n) increases in the same way that niobium substitution fraction (s) increases, and the mobility increases as the structural quality is improved. With increasing P O2, n decreases dramatically though s does not change considerably. This may indicate that a large number of p -type native defects form, which "kill" the electrons produced by the Nb donors. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Escherichia coli contains multiple peptidoglycan-specific hydrolases, but their physiological purposes are poorly understood. Several mutants lacking combinations of hydrolases grow as chains of unseparated cells, indicating that these enzymes help cleave the septum to separate daughter cells after cell division. Here, we confirm previous observations that in the absence of two or more amidases, thickened and dark bands, which we term septal peptidoglycan (SP) rings, appear at division sites in isolated sacculi. The formation of SP rings depends on active cell division, and they apparently represent a cell division structure that accumulates because septal synthesis and hydrolysis are uncoupled. Even though septal constriction was incomplete, SP rings exhibited two properties of mature cell poles: they behaved as though composed of inert peptidoglycan, and they attracted the IcsA protein. Despite not being separated by a completed peptidoglycan wall, adjacent cells in these chains were often compartmentalized by the inner membrane, indicating that cytokinesis could occur in the absence of invagination of the entire cell envelope. Finally, deletion of penicillin-binding protein 5 from amidase mutants exacerbated the formation of twisted chains, producing numerous cells having septa with abnormal placements and geometries. The results suggest that the amidases are necessary for continued peptidoglycan synthesis during cell division, that their activities help create a septum having the appropriate geometry, and that they may contribute to the development of inert peptidoglycan.
