<p>Purpose: Patents as one of the important components of intellectual capital are emerging as a new source for mining insights on open innovation (OI) practice of the organizations. Their role in value creation through collaboration and the inter-firm differences is yet to be explored in depth. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the aim, survey data is analyzed to rank OI practices (collaboration) of the firms, while patent data are analyzed to carry out descriptive and bivariate analysis to study the inter-firm differences in collaboration. Findings: The survey findings highlight mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A) and patent pooling as the top two preferred modes of OI, while from patent data M&amp;A has emerged as a predominant OI practice for mainly nonresident firms. At the firm level characteristics, out of firm age, number of granted patents and firm size, firm age has been found to be somewhat significant in few cases of OI practices. Research limitations/implications: It provides an alternative source, in this case patent data to study open innovation capabilities of firms in India. There is contribution to the patent value theory from profit motive to deriving strategic decisions on collaboration. Practical implications: The managerial implications of this study lie in realizing granted patents as important business tools for seeking collaboration, tracing competitive intelligence and the geography of innovation of the firms' competitors. Originality/value: The dataset of granted patents at the Indian Patent office (2005–2017), the sample of pharmaceutical firms drawn from this list of patents, patent data– based OI insights and the use of multiple imputation technique to missing data for meaningful insights are some of the unique aspects of this paper. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.</p>

Modes of collaboration in open innovation practice of pharmaceutical firms in India: the analysis of survey and patent data

This article investigates whether the implementation of the management practices on the shop floor of Japanese organisations located overseas in developing economies has affected the employees' organisational commitment. A qualitative study involving in-depth interviews from twenty general employees across different sections of a leading Japanese auto-maker's plant located near the national capital region (NCR) of India, have revealed a depleting relationship and dwindling commitment with their management owing to over intensified work pressure, strain, and stress. The author has proposed four profiles of employee commitments by explaining the phenomenon of employment relationship and employee behaviour through a matrix model coined as 'BION' - balanced, idealists, opportunists and non-committals. The study yielded a majority of respondents, nine employees associating with the profile of the opportunists, followed by seven respondents with the profile of the balanced and only four employees were identified with the idealists. Theoretical and practical implications with limitations of the findings have been discussed. Copyright © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Employee relationship and its effect on organisational commitment: A critical look at a Japanese subsidiary of India

Germany has the largest information technology (IT) market in Europe and one of the most important markets in the world. While it is home to some globally leading IT companies, the German IT industry is more accurately characterized by highly specialized small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and many vibrant IT start-up companies. A major challenge for the German IT industry that runs as a common theme through the present study is the use of new technologies as companies need to continue investing in innovations and technologies to keep up with the global pace of innovation. In this context, the companies seek to recruit highly skilled IT professionals. However, the supply of skilled labor is short, which is another theme that arises in this study. © 2020 The Author(s).

Chapter 10: Information technology issues in Germany

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to argue for an integrative model of social enterprises (SE) and social marketing (SM) to usher in desirable change, instead of the currently adopted either/or approach. We offer the shadow framework to integrate these two paradigms in the context of peace-building organizations. Design/methodology/approach: Using purposive sampling strategy, 19 cases of peacebuilding initiatives were identified and reviewed from secondary sources. Ashoka Fellows working in the domain of peacebuilding, along with a few other exemplary cases across the globe were considered. Findings: We found an emerging typology of three forms in the organizational responses to peacebuilding initiatives: (a) pure charity-driven work, (b) dual structure of charity plus business enterprises, and (c) social enterprises with distinct revenue model. Research limitations/implications: Building upon previous theoretical research, we find a lot of merit in SEs adopting the SM toolkit. We contribute to theory building by showing the interaction between paradox theory and stakeholder marketing in the context of SEs dealing with wicked problems such as peacebuilding. Consequently, we propose a shadow social marketing (SSM) model that would camouflage the real offering of peace through an apparent offering that would be non-controversial in nature and result in moderate-importance small wins for the multiple stakeholders involved with conflicting interests. Practical implications: From a managerial perspective, chances of success of the desired social change increases by complementing the efforts of SEs through the SM toolkit. Organizationally, although all the three forms of peacebuilding initiatives can benefit from systematic usage of the SSM, they need to reframe their efforts toward those that are not pro-peace, rather than preach to the converted. Consequently, the answer may lie in efforts at building cultural sensitivity to promote entrepreneurship amongst such target groups amongst such target groups in conflicting communities, with an organizational form that successfully marries SEs and SM. Originality/value: Though previous scholarship mentions the need for finding complementarities between social marketing objectives and social enterprise missions, no paper yet has suggested a roadmap for achieving it. This paper highlights an integrative plan that, in this specific case of peacebuilding initiatives, or social enterprises in general, can leverage to evolve better organizational practices, improve financial sustainability and measurable impact to effect the desired social change. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Integrating social enterprise and social marketing with shadow framework: A case for peacebuilding

This paper investigates the potential causes behind student dropouts in higher education institutions (HEIs), and explores the use of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools in reducing dropout rates. This qualitative study used 12 semi-structured interviews with university employees (n = 9) and LSS experts (n = 3), in order to understand the complexity of the student dropout phenomenon and the role of various LSS tools in reducing the dropout rates. Analysis revealed that in order to develop a typology of student dropouts, HEIs have to maintain detailed records and sensitise relevant authorities about the impact of a student’s dropout decision. Though the small number of semi-structured interviews is a limitation of the study, the revelations of HEIs authorities and LSS experts have given new impetus to look at and take action on the issue of student dropouts in HEIs. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Convenience matter in mobile banking adoption intention?

The importance of the information technology/information technology enabled services (IT/ITES) sector in modern Iran is indubitable. As IT has started to penetrate deeper into the country in recent years, IT and telecommunications infrastructure continue to be developed and enhanced throughout Iran. This expansion is creating many job prospects for employees in Iran, as well as providing greater availability of e-business, e-commerce, e-learning, and e-government in the country. Improving the quality of education and healthcare is also influenced by the growing importance of IT in the country. As demonstrated in this chapter, the three top IT-related organizational issues in Iran are: revenue-generating IT innovations, business agility and speed to market, and alignment between IT and business. The top three technology issues are: enterprise application integration, networks and telecommunications, and ERP systems. The IT employees indicate they are moderately happy with their work despite facing significant work pressure. © 2020 The Author(s).

The central theme that arises from the study of the information technology (IT) industry in India is the importance of the size and adaptability of the IT workforce in the country. The prominence that Indian companies receive globally is due primarily to their ability to provide knowledgeable and skilled IT workers to clients who have a lot of projects that need to be carried out. The IT industry in India has also been able to adapt fairly well to the changing needs of their global clients. Global businesses have not only been outsourcing their IT work to Indian IT service companies over the past three decades, but they have also started to locate in-house units in India in order to make appropriate use of the availability of this sizable and skilled workforce. © 2020 The Author(s).

Chapter 14: Information technology issues in India

The paper aims to systematically review the literature on Lean, Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma (LSS) intervention and its tools and techniques to reduce the medication errors in hospitals. Subject-specific journals according to the top journal ranking lists in the Business School and Healthcare sector were used for the assessment. Eight databases including Medline, PubMed, EBSCOhost, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Embase, CINAHL and PsycINFO were used to collect relevant articles from the year 1996–2016. A total of 24 studies were identified have from the search meeting the criteria for the systematic literature review. Increased interest in the application of process excellence methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma and LSS to reduce medication errors especially from the developed countries was found. Several themes have emerged in this paper including: tools and techniques of Lean and Six Sigma in the context of medication errors, Lean and Six Sigma methodology, types of medication errors, LSS project selection, benefits, challenges and success factors. The study is expected to benefit healthcare practitioners in implementing the LSS methodology to reduce medication errors. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
