Strategic patenting in the last decades has been studied extensively to reflect on the trends in patenting motives of firms though mostly for large firms and from developed countries. Studies point to the numerous emerging roles of patents. How firms apply their patenting strategy, is still a fragmented area as major variation across sectors exists. Small- and medium-sized firms, rarely studied in detail have been taken up for study by exploring the pharmaceutical sector where patents are integral to success in business. A survey cum secondary data-based study generates insights on firms' ranking of patenting motives and the impact of firms' characteristics on these motives. Protection of invention is reaffirmed as the primary motive, though licensing motive has slipped in rank. Further, inter-firm differences through regressions show that the number of granted patents and firm age positively and significantly impact firm's patenting motives but firm size has no impact. Patenting motives of pharmaceutical firms: A perspective on changing role of patents and firms' strategy in business

Learning outcomes: The primary teaching objective is to discuss the capital raising efforts of a firm under financial distress. It also provides supporting data to calculate cost of capital, DuPont/modified DuPont values and Altman’s Z-Score that can appropriately be incorporated into the discussion. Case-B provides information and data of the company’s recent performance and to changes in bankruptcy law in India. Overall, this case study provides ample scope to discuss, understand and provide the solution to the following key corporate finance themes as follows: 1. Analyzing accounting statements and examine potential earnings quality issue. 2. Predicting default and bankruptcy using qualitative analysis, financial ratios, traditional and modified DuPont models and Altman’s Z score model. 3. Examining the capital raising efforts of a distressed firm, which has already defaulted on borrowings. 4. To explore the impact of changes in regulation on the turnaround efforts of the firm as well as on the promoters of the firm. Case overview/synopsis: Since 2005, Amtek Auto moved at a breathtaking speed with the goal of reaching $10bn in sales, from the current level of about $1.2bn. The group had acquired more than a dozen companies spending about Rs.5,000cr. ($850m) during this period primarily through borrowed funds. However, the market and business expansion was not happening as expected. The company’s capacity utilization was just about 40% (approx.) during much of this period. The mounting fixed costs of operation and debt servicing grew to the level of unsustainability, led the firm to default on its borrowing. Now the company had to quickly recapitalize itself to run its operations and retain the premier position in auto component industry. The company and its promoters were considering various methods of debt restructuring, asset sale and further equity infusion. Social marketing applications in public policy programs: key learnings and applications

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to use the framework of stakeholder analysis in a participatory democracy, used in forest management planning, for arriving at the best management option for selected sacred groves of Kachchh. This is achieved by accounting for economic, cultural and ecological values and the resulting outcomes in the complex institutional mechanism. Additionally, this study provides a framework for complex decision-making that characterizes the management of sacred groves involving multiple criteria and options accounting for multiple stakeholders that involve conflicting interests. Design/methodology/approach: The analytical hierarchy process was used to calculate the global priorities of management options using the relative importance of stakeholders, weights of different decision criteria to arrive at the best management practice for selected groves of Kachchh. The global priorities of management options rank management practices based on stakeholders' values and their effects on the choice of management strategy as well as on the potential to attain a compromise between competing interests. For this purpose, survey responses of 141 individuals belonging to seven different stakeholder categories were analyzed. Along with focus group discussions, and personal interviews, a stratified random sampling technique was used to survey respondents. Findings: Based on the global priority weights of the alternatives, it is determined that the restoration management option (guggal is restored by planting new guggal sapplings, cattle grazing is prohibited and high levels of ecosystem goods and services are provided) had the highest score, followed by the preservation management option (grazing is allowed on the periphery, juvenile guggal is preserved and moderate ecosystem goods and services are provided). Therefore, restoration of sacred groves is the best management practice of sacred groves in West Kachchh, offering a compromise between maximizing provision of ecosystem services and economic benefits in terms of allowing cattle grazing. Originality/value: Though there are several studies on best management practices for community-owned forests, irrigation systems, and pasture lands, and the role of local institutions in sustaining these common-pool resources; such studies for sacred groves are absent, despite sacred groves being one of the longest surviving common-pool resources that has sustained it over several decades. This is the first study that uses the framework of stakeholder analysis to arrive at the best management practice for sacred groves. The uniqueness of the study lies in a comprehensive evaluation of ecological–economic–cultural interests of multiple stakeholders toward management of sacred groves. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Developing a framework for sacred grove management using stakeholder analysis: evidence from sacred groves in Gujarat, India

This project focuses on organizational, technological, and individual information technology (IT) issues in Ghana. IT has been widely adopted in Ghana, and it is growing at a relatively fast pace as more firms are trooping into the country. In this study, it was noticed that security and privacy became the top issues. This was not surprising because this has been a matter of concern to many organizations around the world as the adoption of IT must provide the assurance to the issues surrounding privacy and security. The government institutions in Ghana have started to rely heavily on IT, and security and privacy have been a major concern for employees. Business intelligence/analytics (BI/BA) is considered one of the major technology issues as indicated by a high demand for BI/BA professionals. Both small and large IT firms are providing BI/BA services in Ghana, and the demand is very strong. BI/BA is followed by customer relationship management systems and enterprise application integration in that order. Most of the IT professionals in the country are somewhat satisfied with their jobs, and they enjoy lower work pressures, workload, and burnout. They also exhibit a strong sense of professional accomplishment. Nevertheless, they are only somewhat loyal to their organizations and are more loyal to the IT profession because currently there is a high level of unemployment in Ghana, and it is difficult for IT professionals to easily change jobs. © 2020 The Author(s).

Chapter 11: Information technology issues in Ghana

The World IT Project, the largest study of its kind in the IS academic field, was conceptualized more than a decade ago. Long time in the making, the project was motivated by the dominant and pervasive bias in IS research towards American and Western views. In very broad terms, the World IT Project captures the organizational, technological, and individual issues of IT employees across the world and relates them to cultural and organizational variables. The project was officially launched in 2013 and is now in the publication phase. Because of the enormous global scale of the project, a single or even two or three publications cannot fully describe our findings. This book is a major publication that describes and analyzes the organizational, technological, and individual issues of IT employees in the 37 countries that were included in the project. This first chapter provides the necessary background for the remaining country chapters, which are co-authored with specific country teams. In here, we describe the goals and objectives of the World IT Project, its general framework and major research questions, the relevant literature and theoretical background, methodological details, expected outcomes and publications, and important contributions. The goal is to provide a world view of IT issues that will be relevant to stakeholders at the firm, national, and international levels. © 2020 The Author(s).

Chapter 1: The world IT project: A long journey in the making

Public family firms in India represent an interesting case of relatively high ownership concentration combined with high growth opportunities, less competitive product markets and less developed capital markets. Investigating the relationship between ownership concentration and stock market performance, our initial analysis indicates insignificant average abnormal stock returns at low levels of family holdings but weak positive performance at high levels of ownership in the full sample of family and non-family firms and the family subsample. These aggregate results appear robust to alternative metrics of abnormal performance, controls for founder, descendant, and outside CEOs. Further analysis of subsamples of less and more competitive product markets indicates that while the vast majority of family firms enjoying high growth opportunities in less competitive market environments exhibit poor performance at lower ownership levels, those firms with higher family holdings are associated with significantly positive abnormal returns. However, the relation between family ownership and firm valuation under high growth prospects becomes insignificant for a much smaller fraction of firms facing high product market competition. Overall, our results are consistent with the hypothesis that positive alignment of interest effects offset family entrenchment effects on firm performance at high levels of ownership concentration common in India where most firms face high growth opportunities and less product market competition. These results challenge the evidence in western developed economies marked by relatively weaker growth rates and stronger product market rivalry that the performance of family firms tends to decline at high ownership concentration due to entrenchment. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Purpose: The paper aims to investigate existing research in factors impacting organic food purchase with special reference to eco-labels and identify the relative influence of various determinants. Design/methodology/approach: A conceptual framework is proposed of organic food buying behaviour after analysing a sample of 154,072 consumers reported in 91 research studies from 2001–2020. The factors are categorised into four categories on the basis of relatedness. In addition, the factors were analysed based on time, region and national economic status. Findings: The impact of consumer psychographics, socio-demographic and product-related factor categories were found to be more pronounced compared to supply-related factor category. The results show that among individual factors like health concern, environment concern, knowledge and awareness, eco-labels and price followed by trust in organic food are the most important factors in organic food purchase. The findings suggest that eco-labels increase trust in organic food by reducing information asymmetry in consumers. However, there were differences in perception and factors importance between high-income economies and emerging economies. Originality/value: The study is unique, as it analyses secondary research based on criteria of high-income economies and emerging economies. The conceptual framework can also be incorporated further into different cognitive models like the theory of planned behaviour. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Consumer buying behaviour and purchase intention of organic food: a conceptual framework

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the determinants of organic food buying behaviour in an emerging economy like India, where organic food yet has low market share in spite of its potential. Using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as the underlying basis, it attempts to explain the effect of attitude, subjective norms and the perceived behaviour control (PBC) on buying intention towards organic food among respondents in Delhi-National capital region, India. Additionally, it attempts to discriminate functional and constructive attitudes. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative questionnaire survey approach was used on 306 respondents and multiple linear regression was used to validate the research model. Findings: Attitudes and PBC have a significant positive impact on the intention to purchase organic food. This paper found subjective norms to be weak and barely significant to intention. The results conclude that health motives, past purchase behaviour, knowledge, affordability and trust in organic certification label are the main facilitators in organic food purchase. Primarily, the respondents see buying organic food regularly as being of value and enjoyable to them. A more favourable appearance vs conventional food was negatively related to behavioural intention. Originality/value: This research could aid all stakeholders in the organic food sector, particularly emerging economies like India where the organic market is still nascent. It could be an essential driver to improve customer involvement and thus aid them in the decision-making process to choose organic food over conventional food. It also attempts to establish the usability of TPB in assessing functional attitudes based on constructive attitudes for organic food purchase. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.
