In present study, statistical optimization of biodiesel–derived crude glycerol fermentation to DHA by immobilized G. oxydans cells over polyurethane foam is reported. Effect of DHA (product) inhibition on crude glycerol fermentation was analyzed using conventional biokinetic models and new model that accounts for both substrate and product inhibition. Optimum values of fermentation parameters were: pH = 4.7, temperature = 31 °C, initial substrate concentration = 20 g/L. At optimum conditions, DHA yield was 89% (17.83 g/L). Effect of product inhibition on fermentation was trivial for DHA concentrations ≤30 g/L. At higher concentrations (≥50 g/L), kinetics and yield of fermentation showed marked reduction with sharp drop in Vmax and KS values. Inhibition effect was more pronounced for immobilized cells due to restricted transport of fermentation mixture across polyurethane foam. Retention of fermentation mixture in immobilized matrix resulted in higher localized DHA concentration that possibly enhanced inhibition effect. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Process optimization and analysis of product inhibition kinetics of crude glycerol fermentation for 1,3-Dihydroxyacetone production

In this paper a novel planar antenna is proposed for 5.2GHz band application. The area of designed antenna has been reduced by 52\% in comparison to a conventional rectangular microstrip patch antenna. The antenna has three vertical stripes and one horizontal stripe. The length and width of these stripes are varied to tune the antenna for a certain operating frequency. The antenna is fed by using a 50 ohm microstrip line connected at the center of horizontal stripe. The fabricated antenna has return loss of 22dB at 5.27GHz and impedance bandwidth of 120MHz. A parametric study has been carried out to analyze and to find the design sensitive parameters. © 2017 IEEE.

Step shape antenna for MIMO applications

<p>Metallic glass nanocomposite thin films were synthesized for an immiscible Ag-Cu alloy system by magnetron sputtering. The structure of the films was unique, consisting of homogeneously dispersed nanocrystallites in an amorphous matrix. The size and volume fraction of the nanocrystallites increased with increasing film thickness resulting in increased elastic modulus and hardness. The high electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite films was examined by a valence-band study, which showed that exchange interaction between Ag and Cu in the nanocomposite structure resulted in enhanced charge carrier concentration. The inverse correlation between electrical conductivity and film thickness was explained by surface and interface scattering of electrons with increasing volume fraction of nanocrystallites. The small temperature dependence of conductivity was attributed to the distorted Fermi surface of the nanocomposite films resulting in a greater contribution from structure scattering, which is temperature-independent. © 2017, The Minerals, Metals &amp; Materials Society.</p>

Metallic Glass Nano-composite Thin Films for High-performance Functional Applications

Magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) based wireless power transfer (WPT) system is recognized as an efficient and promising technology for safe, convenient and elegant charging solution for various electronic portable devices. MRC technology helps in transferring power wirelessly from transmitter to receiver over larger distances. However in such loosely coupled systems, low power transfer efficiency is the major issue in comparison to conventional wired charging systems. The paper presents detailed analysis of power transfer efficiency between two independent coils separated by distance of 15 cm. The analysis involves an effect of coil geometrical dimensions on power transfer efficiency and mutual inductance between transmitter (TX) and receiver coils (RX). In addition, the investigations are further extended to analyze the role of shielding and effect of shielding geometry on power transfer efficiency and mutual inductance between the two coils. © 2016 IEEE.

Effect of coil geometry and shielding on wireless power transfer system

A computational study of effect of solder geometric parameters on the stress generation in microelectronic circuits of Light Emitting Diodes is presented. The stress developed in the SAC (SnAgCu) solders is a function of the solder height used in the packaging. This parameter has restriction in usage due to geometrical constraints and hence it becomes a critical parameter in assessing the stress level in the packages. The plastic stresses generated in the viscoplastic SAC solders due to thermal loading are mostly responsible for the stress generation in the GaN LED layer. The residual or the post operational stress level in the GaN LEDs can be a critical parameter in understanding the light output from it. The performance may change due to the generation of defects, which is due to the residual stresses induced in the die. Hence, the residual stress level and its propagation from solder up to GaN LEDs is analyzed to reduce package stress which is presented in this work. The objective of this work is also to provide analysis related to packaging and reliability related issues on the basis of residual thermal stresses and to provide a parametric study on the basis of the interconnects used in it in order to enhance its stability as well as performance. © 2017 IEEE.

A simulation study on residual thermal stresses in high power GaN LEDs

In recent years, several experimental and simulation studies have been reported on the terahertz (THz) generation using a photoconductive antenna (PCA). The major problem with PCA is its low overall efficiency, which depends on several parameters related to a semiconductor material, an antenna geometry, and characteristics of the laser beam. To analyze the effect of different parameters on PCA efficiency, accurate circuit modeling, using physics undergoing in the device, is necessary. Although a few equivalent circuit models have been proposed in the literature, these models do not adequately capture the semiconductor physics in PCA. This paper presents an equivalent electrical circuit model of PCA incorporating basic semiconductor device physics. The proposed equivalent circuit model is validated using Sentaurus TCAD device level modeling tool as well as with the experimental results available in the literature. The results obtained from the proposed circuit model are in close agreement with the TCAD results as well as available experimental results. The proposed circuit model is expected to contribute towards future research efforts aimed at optimization of the performance of the PCA system. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Circuit modeling and performance analysis of photoconductive antenna

Phylogenetic examination has turned out to be fundamental part of investigation for evolution of “tree of life”. This investigation is most vital in logical research for development of life; it is a measure of impressions among creatures. It is important during examination that is required in process of arranging scattered information. Due to the expansion of more information in the field of proteomics, the computational biology algorithms should be extremely productive and near to accuracy. The inference of expansive and precise phylogenetic trees has expanded in most recent couple of years. Early methodologies for phylogenetic derivation depended on single processor PCs. Nonetheless, for expansive number of taxa, it is not feasible to utilize single processor. This represents a test for more proficient and adaptable calculations that utilizates parallel and conveyed processing for phylogenetic surmising. In this research paper, a new algorithm ClusPhylo based on clusters is introduced for large datasets. The proposed algorithms upgrades tree development issue by partitioning input arrangement into groups builds beginning sub-trees from arrangements of clusters and consolidations sub-trees into a solitary tree by additive methodology. ClusPhylo is implemented on Apache Spark. The execution of calculation as far as conclusive log probability qualities and execution time is contrasted with understood calculations. ClusPhylo: Spark based fast and reliable approach for reconstruction of phylogenetic network using large databases

This paper presents performance evaluation of an energy efficient building named Sodha Bers Complex (SBC) for composite climate of India. SBC is a four story energy efficient building built at Varanasi (U.P.), India. Most of the cooling concepts like orientation, modified Trombe wall, earth shelter, cross ventilation, day lighting, wind tower, wind channel etc. have been incorporated in the design of SBC. The total embodied energy, CO₂ emission, annual energy saving of SBC has been evaluated. Further, energy matrices namely energy payback time (EPBT), energy production factor (EPF) and life cycle conversion efficiency (LCCE) based on an overall annual thermal energy have been evaluated. It has been found that the SBC is most economical from thermal energy point of view due to low grade thermal energy and carbon credit earned. Unit cost has been evaluated for two cases having different interest rate, salvage value and life of SBC building and found to be minimum for 5% of interest rate, 30% salvage value and 300 years of life that is 2.52 [Figure presented]/kWh (0.039 $/kWh) and 2.22 [Figure presented]/kWh (0.034 $/kWh). © 2017

In the current study, surface modification of austenitic stainless steel, SS316L, was done using friction stir processing. The strain rates during processing were varied over a wide range by using two different tool rotational speeds of 388 rpm and 1800 rpm. The processing was done at two different conditions of: (i) ambient cooling and (ii) submerging in liquid bath maintained at 0 °C. Friction stir processing resulted in significant grain refinement from 22 μm for the as-received alloy to 0.67 μm for the sample processed at 388 rpm under submerged cooling condition. A relationship between the final recrystallized grain size and Zener-Holloman parameter was developed as Z=72.84/d. Deformation texture for processed specimens showed strong strain rate and temperature dependence. Sample processed at high temperature and low strain-rate showed copper-type texture while low temperature and high strain-rate promoted brass-type texture. Hardness of processed specimens showed an increase while elastic modulus decreased after processing which is explained by texture evolution during processing. Tribological properties of processed specimens were evaluated using reciprocating wear tests and slurry erosion tests. The processed samples showed significant improvement in the wear and erosion resistance and were found to have strong correlation with the flow work given as hardness to elastic modulus ratio. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
