Pulp and paper industry generates large wastewater volumes containing recalcitrant and toxic compounds in various forms. These compounds are highly toxic and standard primary/secondary treatments are unable to filter heavy metal contaminants besides organic species. An emerging demand of advance level treatment is the motivation of current work that explores possibility of using thick sand of deep aquifers as an adsorbent to remove inorganic and organic contaminants simultaneously from wastewater besides desalination. Popular ultrasonic cavitation is used to accelerate degradation of toxic organic effluent into less toxic open ring structures besides curing heavy metals to form new bonds during adsorption. Because of extreme local environment due to cavitation, heavy metals coagulate in silicon-aluminum atomic meshes and carbon nano tubes for less toxic new crystalline structure. Significant changes in physico-chemical investigations like pH, chemical oxygen demand and colour towards drinkable water standards indicate effective adsorption resulting into wastewater purification. © 2019

Ultrasonic cavitation tailored wastewater purification and desalination using thick sand of highly permeable deep aquifer

In this current study, two post-processing techniques, i.e. microwave annealing and cryogenic treatment were employed on WC-10Co-4C detonation gun (D-gun) coating to improve the tribological properties. The effect of both the post-treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was studied using optical micrograph (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Microwave annealing, resulted in a significant change in the size and morphology of WC particles. However, cryogenic processing showed minimal variation with slight decrease in the WC particle size. Phase changes were observed after both the post-treatment techniques. The cryogenically treated sample showed considerable improvement in the hardness while there was a slight reduction in the hardness after microwave processing. Among all the coatings, the microwave processed sample had the highest fracture toughness. The improvement in hardness after the cryogenic process was attributed to the formation of g phase and the presence of nano precipitates in the coating matrix. Cryogenically treated coating showed significant improvement in the wear resistance of the WC D-gun coating due to the improvement in the microhardness in the coating. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Wear behavior of microwave-annealed and cryogenically treated thermal spray coatings: A comparative evaluation

In this paper, the vibrational response of the functionally graded plate has been carried out using non-polynomial based algebraic shear deformation theory. Hamilton’s variational principle has been used in deriving the governing equations. The Navier solution technique has been employed to solve the governing equation in conjunction with boundary conditions which are simply supported. In addition to these, the power-law governing equations have been considered for calculating the effective material properties of FGM and its mechanical properties are considered to be changing in the direction of thickness. The non-dimensional frequency has been evaluated for several vibrating modes of functionally graded thin and thick plates. The frequency parameter has also been evaluated for different aspect ratios and thickness ratios. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Vibration Response of Metal-Ceramic Based Functionally Graded Plate Using Navier Solution

Millions of people get injured, disabled or die in automotive accidents each year. Knowledge about the type of road accident is invaluable to the emergency medical services providers for optimal planning and execution of the rescue operation. An IoT based system has been developed in this work to report the occurrence, location as well as the type of road accident. The system uses in-built sensors of passenger smartphone to detect and classify the accident as head-on collision, rollover or fall-off. The accuracy of the proposed system, which uses Naïve Bayes classifier for classification, has been evaluated using precision, recall, F1 score and ROC curve. © 2020 IEEE.

Modeling IoT Enabled Automotive System for Accident Detection and Classification

The exergoeconomic and the enviroeconomic analyses of basin type single slope distiller unit based on solar energy can play an important role for mitigating the contemporary problem of acute shortage of drinking water throughout the world particularly developing and under developed countries. The technology of solar distiller unit has been known to humankind since the 16th century; however, it has not been preferred for purifying water on a large scale till date because of low potable water output, high initial investment, and non-availability of a technician at the local level. This technology is simple in nature and has the potential to mitigate the drinking water shortage; however, it has not been fully explored so far. A lot of configurations have been reported by various researchers since the development of solar distiller unit technology. This paper summarizes some of the important contributions reported so far on the basis of exergoeconomic and enviroeconomic parameters of single slope solar desalination units by incorporating the effect of nanofluid. A comparative study has been presented followed by a detailed discussion about exergoeconomic and enviroeconomic parameters of a single slope solar desalination unit loaded with/without nanofluid. It has been observed that the application of water-based nanofluid in the distiller unit results in the enhancement of performance. Exergoeconomic and enviroeconomic analyses of single slope solar desalination unit loaded with/without nanofluid: A comprehensive review

This paper proposes, an annular slot antenna with inner feeding network to generate Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) waves at 5.4 GHz frequency, for WLAN application. The proposed OAM antenna system is smaller in size because open-ended microstrip lines are used as radiator along with annular slotted ground plane. Parametric variation and far field radiation patterns are presented and discussed. 3D phase patterns proves the generation of OAM waves of different OAM modes using proposed OAM antenna. © 2020 IEEE.

OAM wave generation using inner feed annular slot microstrip radiator

This letter describes the use of slot array equivalence of single square-shaped patch antenna for the generation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) wave. Single patch antenna with phase-shifted power divider network behaves as 4-element slot array and can generate +1 or -1 OAM mode. Design, analysis, and measurement of the proposed novel OAM antenna that resonates at frequency 5.5 GHz are presented. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

OAM Wave Generation Using Square-Shaped Patch Antenna as Slot Array Equivalence

This paper proposes a hexagon patch antenna with six elliptical slots for V2V communication range as stated in IEEE 802.11p standard. The proposed geometry (Design I) is fabricated on FR-4 substrate and fed with the coaxial probe. The elliptical shape cuts are used to improve the directivity and gain. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation results. In Design II, the same circuit with defective ground structure has also been simulated, which further enhances the performance. The simulated results of design II show the gain of 6.021 dB and directivity of 9.443 dB in the band from 5.8 GHz to 6 GHz. © 2020 IEEE.

High gain hexagonal patch antenna for V2V communication

Epileptic Seizure is a chronic nervous system disorder which is analyzed using Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. This paper proposes a Graph Signal Processing technique called Graph Discrete Fourier Transform (GDFT) for the detection of epilepsy. EEG data points are projected on the Eigen space of Laplacian matrix of graph to produce GDFT coefficients. The Laplacian matrix is generated from weighted visibility graph constructed from EEG signals. It proposes Gaussian kernel based edge weights between the nodes. The proposed GDFT based feature vectors are then used to detect the seizure class from the given EEG signal using a crisp rule based classification. Simulation results show that the proposed GDFT based features from Gaussian Weighted Visibility Graph (VG) can detect epileptic seizure with 100 \% accuracy. © 2020 IEEE.

Savonius wind turbines are special class of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). These are low-cost drag-driven turbines and are known to be inefficient. It is proposed in this study that a simple modification to the turbine blade design can yield a significant improvement in power efficiency. The performance of the new design is extensively studied on OPENFOAMv1812, a popular open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) library. The flow equations coupled with equations of rotation of the turbine are solved on an overset mesh framework. This study also serves as a validation of recently released overset support in OPENFOAM. The turbulence is incorporated by coupling Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) with shear stress transport (SST) κ-ω eddy viscosity turbulence model. The turbulence parameters are set to produce a flow with the Reynolds number, Re=4.8 × 105. To have better confidence in simulations, this study also presents a comparison of numerical flow over conventional Savonius turbine designs with the published data. It is observed that a majority of CFD analysis on wind turbine designs are performed for the fixed tip speed ratio on a traditional static mesh structure. But, in this CFD study, a winddriven rotation of Savonius turbine is simulated on an overset dynamics approach. The results of the study are compared and discussed based on the predicted moment and power coefficients, pressure variation on the blades, flow velocity field, and wake analysis. The study indicates that the blade design presented here has a potential to increase the power efficiency of a Savonius wind turbine by 10-28\%. © 2020 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
