Inclusion of renewable energy resources with existing conventional generation resources summons revisit to optimization methods used in the field of generation scheduling. The Unit Commitment problem in itself is a highly convoluted problem governed by complex time varying constraints. It gets even more complicated when additional constraints are added due to inclusion of renewable generation backed up by battery storage system. An effort has been made in this paper to improve the model for solving the Unit Commitment problem of conventional thermal generation in conjunction with renewable energy based generation system with storage. A hybrid artificial intelligence based multiple stage solution methodology is envisaged to provide a techno-economical optimal solution to the problem. The proposed methodology provides economically better solution to the Unit Commitment problem of ten thermal generators when integrated with battery supported wind and solar generation. The overall operational cost gets reduced due to integration of renewable resources which gets further reduced by incorporating battery with a novel optimized charge/discharge scheduling technique. © 2018 - IOS Press and the authors. A multi-stage hybrid artificial intelligence based optimal solution for energy storage integrated mixed generation unit commitment problem

The general problem of DG placement deals with the size of DG and its location, but at the same time this placement must be economically justifiable. To gain benefits of DG placement, the DG must be optimally sized and placed. The paper uses analytical expressions for determination of optimal size and a methodology for optimal location of DG placement. The solar PV system is used as the distributed generator to be placed in primary distribution system for active power supply. The solar photovoltaic system is employed here as a type 1 distributed generator (DG) to supply active power to the distribution system. The methodology uses analytical expressions and is based upon the exact loss formula. Along with the optimal size and location, this paper also presents the economics of this placement considering loss reduction and capacity relieving of the distribution substation. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Optimal placement of solar pv as active power source in primary distribution system for loss reduction

An effort has been made to access what happens to prevailing thermal generation plants if the generation from renewable energy resources is increased above 20\% of total generation. A test case has been taken where generation system comprising of ten thermal generating units is in conjunction with a 500 MW Wind Energy generation plant, and a 500 MW Solar Energy generation plant. It has been found that on one hand the cost of generation gets significantly reduced whereas, on the other hand few thermal generators are compelled to remain with no generation at all. The study reveals the peak load shaving and the economy achieved in overall generation system versus the threat to individual thermal generating plant due to inclusion of nearly 23\% generation from renewable resources. © 2018 Shubham Tiwari et al.

Opportunities vis-à-vis threat to thermal generation due to rising renewable energy penetration

Orbital angular momentum concept has discussed with the help of mathematical equations. An investigation of 8 elements uniform circular array (UCA) for different Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) modes is carried out for three designs. The effect of array radius on OAM purity and the radial outward design to reduce phase complexity is discussed. Uniform circular antenna array for all possible combination has been simulated and its results are demonstrated for different physical and electrical characteristic. © 2018 IEEE.

Study of OAM mode purity by changing the orientation of antenna element

We consider the decentralized power optimization problem for Gaussian fast-fading multiple access channel (MAC) so that the average sum throughput is maximized. In our MAC setup, each transmitter has access to only its own fading coefficient or channel state information (CSI), while the receiver has full CSI available at all instants. Unlike centralized MAC (full CSIT MAC) where the optimal powers are known explicitly, the analytical solution for optimal decentralized powers does not seem feasible. In this letter, we specialize the alternating-maximization (AM) method for numerically computing the optimal powers and ergodic capacity of the decentralized MAC for general fading statistics and average power constraints. For illustration, we apply our AM method to compute the capacity of MAC channels with fading distributions such as Rayleigh and Rician.

Optimal Power Control in Decentralized Gaussian Multiple Access Channels

In this contribution, we derive expressions for carrier concentration and conductance in a Terahertz Photomixing Antenna (PMA) using a basic 2-ray model. We introduce a modulating signal into the analysis and assuming a basic ON/OFF keyed scheme for the modulating signal, we derive expressions for the carrier concentration and conductance. We investigate the effects of input power, angle of incidences of the two laser beams and the beat frequency on the carrier concentration in the PMA. © 2017 IEEE.

Analytical modelling of carrier concentration and conductance in Terahertz Photomixing Antennas

In this paper, we consider a tabletop molecular communication (MC) system for exchange of information through flow assisted diffusion of ethanol chemical molecules. Designing modulation and demodulation algorithms for such setup is an important research problem. We propose a demodulation algorithm using Sampling based Adaptive Threshold Variation (S-ATV) for Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) and ON/OFF keying (OOK) based modulation techniques. The performance of BER with bit duration is plotted for proposed demodulation algorithm as well as Increase detection algorithm (IDA). It is found that the proposed S-ATV demodulation algorithm has better performance than IDA for smaller bit durations. © 2018 IEEE.

Experimental Implementation of Molecular Communication System using Sampling based Adaptive Threshold Variation Demodulation Algorithm

This paper presents a metamaterial approach based ultra-wideband patch antenna using a different split-ring resonator structure. The proposed split-ring resonator is constructed on a 0.43mm thick RT Duroid substrate above a partly covered ground plane. The radiating element comprises of a rectangular geometry with arc-shaped structures at the shorter edges, with an overall dimension of 39x30 mm2. The proposed antenna provides a much favorable radiation pattern with a very efficient impedance matching across a wide bandwidth of 3-44 GHz, making it highly suitable for its operation at and beyond ultra-wideband applications and 5G communications. This paper discusses the antenna's design and the parametrical studies performed using available simulation tools. © 2018 IEEE.

Metamaterial based compact planar antenna for UWB and 5G applications

The paper presents a multilevel inverter that can be employed for solar PV applications either for stand alone system or for the grid tied PV system. The multilevel inverter topology employed here is the cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI). In this paper single phase eleven level cascaded multilevel inverter is proposeded for grid integration of solar PV. They have the advantages of providing quality power output with high voltage compatibility. The inverter is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment with the phase shifted SPWM control, implemented for the inverter. Besides this the paper proposed a methodology to control the AC inverter module structure of SPV configuration so as to obtain a good harmonic quality output power from SPV panels with improved THD of this supply. The methodology permits a high voltage output with a low total harmonic distortion without using any particular means for the same. It is capable of synthesizing a staircase output voltage reaching nearer to the sine wave output. © 2017 IEEE.

A methodology for 11-level AC output voltage generation for stand-alone/grid tied solar PV applications

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an emerging technology that could lead to the breakthrough of plug-in Electric Vehicles (EVs). It enables transfer of electric power from one coil to the other based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Inductive coupling (IC) and magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) are the two main methods of WPT. In this paper, MRC technique is used to effectively transfer power over large air gaps. Low power transfer efficiency (PTE) is the major challenge in WPT charged EVs. This may causes due to misalignment between the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx) coils. Lateral and angular are two commonly occurring misalignments in the practical scenario of WPTS. This paper presents the simulation analysis of various factors, which effects PTE. In the analysis, the lateral misalignments are performed for distinct airgaps between Tx and Rx. Various modes of angular misalignments are presented for a fixed value of airgap between coils. In addition, the paper provides the effect of various cores and aluminum shielding on PTE for distinct air gaps are documented. © 2017 IEEE.
