The development of sustainable plantation forestry systems requires the alignment of key attributes including ecological capacity of site, soil, water and environmental values, management intensity and economic benefit. Systems in which these variables are well aligned will have a low risk of failure and should be sustainable. There are vast opportunities to use plantations for wood production and for environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration, amelioration of land degradation and biodiversity enhancement. These opportunities are yet to be explored fully and the value-adding potential of plantation forestry needs to be more explicitly recognized and quantified. Achieving a balance between these interactive areas is a great challenge for tropical forest research and application. Productivity of plantation forests in many tropical regions remains very low, but examples from temperate areas illustrate how productivity can be increased by tree improvement and careful attention to site management practices. Selecting appropriate germplasm (species, provenances or clones) for planting is a vital first step in developing sustainable systems. Recent developments in climatic mapping and growth modelling provide valuable tools for species-site matching, yield prediction and disease risk assessment. Investments in research on sustained productivity would assist not only wood production values, but also the capacity of plantation forests to support and benefit from the provision of environmental services. We present here examples of how relevant research, strengthened by partnerships, can be built for the advancement of sustainable plantation forestry. Opportunities for creating and sharing information through partnership are many. There is a need to foster a balanced approach to the development of plantation forestry to realize its full potential. Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. Parallel aspirations and developments in planted forests in temperate and tropical regions open up valuable opportunities for mutually beneficial research collaboration - the way for the future.

Sustainable plantation forestry in the tropics: new opportunities and collaborative research

Present status of non-wood forest products (NWFP) research in India is reviewed. Overexploitation and unsustainable harvest practices threaten much of the Indian NWFP resources. We outline the merits of a transdisciplinary perspective on NWFP development. The emerging interdisciplinary perspective can be of use in providing conceptual and concrete frameworks for identifying, understanding and maintaining intrinsic ecosystem features and human economic interactions. It may thus form the cornerstone of sustainable management of NWFP resources, which integrates forest conservation and economic development. Future strategies for NWFP development in India may include evolving criteria and indicators for sustainable management, demarcating areas suitable for NWFP harvesting, commercial NWFP farming, value addition through processing and community-based NWFP production.

Linkages between ecology and economics: an analysis of the non-wood forest production scenario in India.

Rattans are climbing palms belonging to the family Arecaceae (Palmae). They are important source of rattan cane which is a major non-wood forest product, especially in Asia. In recent years, uncontrolled harvesting and deforestation have led to resource exhaustion of the desired species in many rattan-producing countries in Asia. As a result of rapid growth of the industry from the 1970s, there was over-exploitation and wasteful utilization of the resource. The increasing global demand for rattan, necessitated sustainable management of the resources which resulted in a series of scientific studies in various institutions. In India, the main fields of research included taxonomic diversity and distribution, nursery, plantation technology, structure, properties and processing and socioeconomics. This paper reviews the work done on Indian rattans and examines the present status of the resources and industry along with the major issues in resource availability, conservation, processing and marketing. Some important and immediate actions to be taken are also suggested.
