In this paper, we explore various matrix-theoretic aspects of the hidden Z class and demonstrate how the concept of principal pivot transform can be effectively used to extend many existing results. In fact, we revisit various results obtained for hidden Z class by Mangasarian, Cottle and Pang in context of solving linear complementarity problems as linear programs. We identify hidden Z-matrices of special category and discuss the number of solutions of the associated linear complementarity problems. We also present game theoretic interpretation of various results related to hidden Z class and obtain proofs following the game theoretic approach of Raghavan for a subclass of Z-matrices. © 2016 Published by Elsevier Inc.

On hidden Z-matrices and the linear complementarity problem

A sulfur-rich copolymer, poly(S-r-C-a) has been synthesized via a sustainable route, showing the utility of two major industrial wastes- elemental sulfur (petroleum waste) and cardanol (agro waste), to explore its potential as cathode material for Li-S batteries. The sulfur-rich copolymer exhibited a reduction in the active material dissolution into the electrolyte and a low self-discharge rate behavior during the rest time compared to an elemental sulfur cathode, indicating the chemical confinement of sulfur units. The presence of organosulfur moieties in copolymer suppress the irreversible deposition of end-discharge products on electrode surfaces and thus improve the electrochemical performances of Li-S batteries. This sulfur copolymer offered a reversible capacity of 892 mA h g-1 at 2nd cycle and maintained the capacity of 528 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles at 200 mA g-1. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) prepared via a sustainable route was used as a conductive filler to extract the better electrochemical performances from this sulfur copolymer. Such sustainable origin batteries prepared via economically viable showed an improved specific capacity of ∼975 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 200 mA g-1 current rate with capacity fading of 0.15\% per cycle and maintained a stable performance over 500 cycles at 2000 mA g-1.

Sustainable Sulfur-rich Copolymer/Graphene Composite as Lithium-Sulfur Battery Cathode with Excellent Electrochemical Performance

In a recent paper, one of the authors - along with co-authors - extended the famous theorem of Beurling to the context of subspaces that are invariant under the class of subalgebras of H∞ of the form IH∞, where I is the inner function z2. In recent times, several researchers have replaced z2 by an arbitrary inner function I and this has proved important and fruitful in applications such as to interpolation problems of the Pick-Nevanlinna type. Keeping in mind the great deal of interest in such problems, in this paper, we provide analogues of the above mentioned IH∞ related extension of Beurling’s theorem in the setting of the Banach space BM OA, in the context of uniform algebras, on compact abelian groups with ordered duals and the Lebesgue space on the real line. We also provide a significant simplification of the proof of Beurling’s theorem in the setting of uniform algebras and a new proof of Helson’s generalization of Beurling’s theorem in the context of compact abelian groups with ordered duals. © 2016, University at Albany. Invariance under bounded analytic functions: Generalizing shifts

Graph theoretic network approach has been used to model the potential connectivity of the natural areas in Darjeeling Himalayas which provide connectivity to the invasive species Maling bamboo (Yushania maling). Centrality indices are a tool for quantifying the intuitive notion of relative importance of the elements of a graph. The probability of connectivity (PC) index which takes into account the impact of functional connectivity among the patches like seed dispersal potential was used to identify the natural patches which can act as stepping stone for the spread of the invasive species. The potential niche map of Maling bamboo modelled using species niche model, MaxEnt have been used as the potential areas of its spread from the regions of its current infestations. An open source software (Confer) has been used to model the various graph indices in the spatial domain. Using areas weighted nodes (forest patches) the extent of connectivity among the various patches in the Darjeeling Himalayas have been computed to identify the critical patches responsible for the spread of Maling bamboo. It has been observed that 3 critical forest patches in the Darjeeling Himalaya Singalilla NP in the west, Senchal WLS in the central region and Neora Valley NP are the key vertices for the spread of Maling bamboo. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Modelling critical patches of connectivity for invasive Maling bamboo (Yushania maling) in Darjeeling Himalayas using graph theoretic approach

Iron deficiency is associated with neuropsychological changes such as restless leg syndrome (RLS), pica, hair loss, etc. Our objective was to assess usefulness of history of RLS and pica in relation with iron stores in blood donors. During medical examination, apart from routine questionnaires specific history of RLS and pica was elicited. Along with hemoglobin markers of iron deficiency such as s. iron, s. ferritin and mean corpuscular volume were analyzed. Out of 400 blood donors 41 had h/o pica/RLS/pagophagia. Positive and negative predictive value of above history is 73.17% and 80.5% respectively. We recommend the use of a screening question for pica and/or RLS in blood donor questionnaire. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Importance of donor history of restless leg syndrome and pica to asses iron deficiency

In this work, we aim to synthesize water soluble and surface functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) using novel surfactants such as terephthalic acid (TA), 2-aminoterephthalic acid (ATA), trimesic acid (TMA) and pyromellitic acid (PMA) through one-step facile chemical co-precipitation and thermal decomposition methods. The as-synthesized SPIONs are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The as-synthesized SPIONs showed very good water solubility and a high magnetization value (Ms = 55-73 emu g-1). Furthermore, the as-synthesized ATA-coated SPIONs are conjugated with a fluorophore (Alexa Fluor 488) to demonstrate their ability for further chemical/biological conjugation without any additional surface modifications. Moreover, above 90\% cell viability in MCF-7 cancer cells has been observed, thus confirming good cytocompatibility of the SPIONs. Therefore, these hydrophilic and carboxyl-amine functionalized SPIONs are very promising candidates to be used for biomedical applications. © 2016 Royal Society of Chemistry.

Facile synthesis of novel hydrophilic and carboxyl-amine functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Darboux chart on projective limit of weak symplectic Banach manifold

In this study, we have designed a compact sample chamber that can achieve accurate and continuous control of the relative humidity (RH) in the vicinity of 100\%. A 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) multilayer can be used as a humidity sensor by measuring its inter-layer repeat distance (d-spacing) via X-ray diffraction. We convert from DOPC d-spacing to RH according to a theory given in the literature and previously measured data of DOPC multilamellar vesicles in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solutions. This curve can be used for calibration of RH close to 100\%, a regime where conventional sensors do not have sufficient accuracy. We demonstrate that this control method can provide RH accuracies of 0.1 to 0.01\%, which is a factor of 10-100 improvement compared to existing methods of humidity control. Our method provides fine tuning capability of RH continuously for a single sample, whereas the PVP solution method requires new samples to be made for each PVP concentration. The use of this cell also potentially removes the need for an X-ray or neutron beam to pass through bulk water if one wishes to work close to biologically relevant conditions of nearly 100\% RH. © the Owner Societies 2015.

Accurate calibration and control of relative humidity close to 100% by X-raying a DOPC multilayer

Magnetization, P31 nuclear magnetic resonance study and first-principles electronic structure calculations have been performed in the spin-1 trimer chain compound CaNi3(P2O7)2. Two separate spectra arising from magnetically and crystallographically inequivalent P sites are observed. In the ordered state, the resonance lines for both the P sites (P1 and P2) are found to be split into two, which is clear microscopic evidence of the development of two-sublattice AFM order below TM. A nonnegligible contribution of ferromagnetic hyperfine field and dipolar field have also been seen in the ordered state. The first-principles calculations show that the intratrimer (J1) and intertrimer interactions (J2) are of weak ferromagnetic type with the values 2.85 and 1.49 meV, respectively, whereas the interchain interaction (J3) is of strong antiferromagnetic type with a value of 5.63 meV. The anisotropy of the imaginary part of dynamical spin susceptibility around TM along with the exponential decrement of 1/T1 below TM indicate the probable participation of the Ni-3d electron's orbital degrees of freedom in the ferrimagnetic transition. The dominance of orbital fluctuations over the spin fluctuations seems to be responsible for showing low value of the binding energy u of the local spin configuration (estimated from local spin models) and an unusually weak exponent in the power-law behavior of 1/T1 below 50 K, in the paramagnetic state. Electronic structure calculations also reveal the importance of orbital degrees of freedom of Ni-3d moments, which is consistent with our NMR data analysis.

We study a generalized scheme of Swanson Hamiltonian from a second-derivative pseudo-supersymmetric approach.
