The baryon mass spectrum is studied to determine the u u, d, and s contents in the nucleon. We find that higher-order symmetry-breaking terms in the mass operator are necessary to estimate p|u»u|p, p|d»d|p, and p|s»s|p in a self-consistent way. We also assess the scalar (pseudoscalar) Higgs-boson couplings to baryons. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Flavor violation in Higgs-boson couplings to baryons

We consider the nucleonic matrix element of the divergence of the gauge invariant flavour singlet axial current and show by a careful analysis that isospin-dependent terms persist in it. We also relate the axial singlet charge to the sum of the quark spin contributions and F D ratio and point out that in order to be consistent with the EMC data a small value is not ruled out. © 1991.

Proton spin dynamics and axial singlet charge

In excited states of atoms and molecules, as well as in time‐dependent situations, the one‐electron density no longer suffices to completely characterize the electronic state; in addition, one now requires information about the electronic phase or the current density. We show that, for a stationary electronic state, the continuity equation of quantum fluid dynamics represents a differential equation for the electronic phase, which must be solved subject to certain periodicity conditions. These periodicity conditions arise from the nodal topology of the wave function and give rise to quantized vortices of current. The consequences of writing an electronic “wave function” for a many‐electron system directly in terms of the single‐particle density and phase have been investigated. We have shown that such a procedure leads to the appearance of an “internal magnetic vector potential.” We also establish the connection between the electronic phase and the geometrical (“Berry”) phase accompanying the adiabatic transport of a quantal system around a closed loop in parameter space. This leads to a generalization of the current density concept and allows us to discuss the geometrical phase in terms of the circulation of this current in parameter space. Phase associated with the single‐particle density of many‐electron systems

Utilizing the quark-glue structure of the eta and eta ' mesons and exploiting the SU(3) relationships among the meson-baryon coupling constant, the authors show that the baryon loop calculation of the pi 0, eta , eta ' to gamma gamma amplitudes allows one a straightforward estimation of the strangeness content in the nucleon. The role of the gluonic couplings of the eta and eta ' is explored.

Estimate of strangeness content of the nucleon

We have examined the saturation of anomalous Ward identities by the low-lying pseudoscalars 0, and to determine the sizes of 0, and 0 mixing angles. The mixing angle turns out to be about -20°which is consistent with the recent findings. Our estimate for the 0- mixing angle shows that it could be bigger than the older value obtained from the mixing, baryon mass splittings, and kaon mass difference. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

We have carried out a computational study of hydrazine and five of its 1,1‐dimethyl derivatives, focusing on their electrostatic potentials and relative bond strengths. Our approach has involved the calculation of ab initio self‐consistent‐field molecular orbital wave functions and molecular properties using the GAUSSIAN 82 system of programs. The electrostatic potentials of the hydrazines possess negative regions of varying sizes and strengths associated with the nitrogens of the α‐diamino linkages. Through an analysis of the positions of the most negative potentials of these regions, we have obtained directly the dihedral angles between the nitrogen lone pairs in these systems. Our use of the electrostatic potential to obtain these angles is a direct and general approach, in contrast to indirect procedures used in the past. We find this dihedral angle to be close to 90° in hydrazine, with variations in the substituted hydrazines that depend on the nature of the substituents. A highly polar structure is found for 1‐chloromethyl‐1‐methylhydrazine, which involves a delocalization of electronic charge from the substituted nitrogen towards the CH2Cl group. We find that substituents able to withdraw significant amounts of electronic density from the central nitrogen lone pair regions, either through resonance or by induction, have a slight bond strengthening effect on the central N‐N bond. This is attributed to a decrease in the repulsion between the weakened nitrogen lone pair regions. The difficulties encountered in seeking the controlled oxidation of hydrazine to nitro derivatives may be due, in part, to the fact that two factors which would favor this, highly negative nitrogen potentials and strong N‐N bonds, are opposing in nature. A computational analysis of the electrostatic potentials and relative bond strengths of hydrazine and some of its 1,1‐dimethyl derivatives

We enquire into the consequences of the nonuniqueness of the factorizability of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian in one dimension. This leads to a hierarchy of potentials, a particular class of which is endowed with the energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Nonuniqueness of the factorization scheme in quantum mechanics

The charge radii of the pseudoscalar mesons +, K+, and K0 are analyzed in an extended vector-dominance framework and the results are compared with those which follow the nonrelativistic quark model and constituent-quark triangle loop approach. Further, estimates of the root-mean-square relative coordinate parameter are obtained which are in conformity with normal theoretical expectations. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Electromagnetic charge radii of pseudoscalar mesons

Using the ladder operator technique, a construction of the supersymmetric Hamiltonian is proposed. We show that the accidental degeneracies associated with the Coulomb and isotropic oscillator problems may be attributed to the existence of a supersymmetry of the Hamiltonians. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
