Drawing upon feminist scholarship, this study offers insights into how respectable consumption exacerbates precarity and contributes to normalisation of sexual violence in Delhi, India. It helps to uncover androcentricity of respect that has been under-examined in marketing theory. This research identifies androcentric discourse of izzat or respect as a key discursive apparatus that enframes sexual violence against women. In this discourse, women are carriers of family traditions and respect or honour. Moreover, norms of consumption get situated within discourse of izzat and alterity is created from women who do not follow these norms. Such women, labelled as unrespectable, live under conditions of heightened precarity and are blamed for the sexual violence they face. Therefore, this work offers insights into normalisation of sexual violence that have not been understood in marketing theory. © 2018, © 2018 Westburn Publishers Ltd.

The precarity of respectable consumption: normalising sexual violence against women

The performance assessment of faculty members’ output like teaching-learning activities, research and administrative activities as initiated by the Indian government in 2010 through performance based assessment scheme (PBAS) aims at making the faculty members accountable for their work and thereby ensuring quality output. For each activity, a faculty member is accorded certain points. The minimum points are required for entry as well as promotion to the next level. It is not difficult to understand that under this regime, the incentives are designed assuming that faculty members are rational, self-interested and would continue to maximize their individual scores. But, introducing PBAS may not serve the purpose of improving the quality of faculty members’ work because the motivation level and values (that is the principles which govern their actions) that they attach to their work differ amongst faculty members. The legal requirement of compliance may instigate some of the faculty members to resort to unethical practices or shirk away from work and report output in terms of numbers only, compromising on the quality, which is called as fabrication. This happens because there is an information asymmetry in assessing the behaviour of faculty members by the Indian government, and thus the higher education sector might suffer from adverse selection, which would affect the quality of output produced. Higher Education and Professional Ethics: Roles and Responsibilities of Teachers

Assessment of higher education faculty members’ performance: Implications for performativity, ethical practices, and quality output

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide lean and six sigma professionals and researchers of tomorrow with Ten Commandments of Lean Six Sigma (LSS). Design/methodology/approach: The Ten Commandments of LSS are based on several years’ experience of four authors who act as researchers, LSS Master Black Belts, consultants, practitioners and trainers on various topics of Lean, Six Sigma and general quality management and continuous improvement. Findings: The Ten Commandments in our opinion include: alignment of LSS initiative with organisational strategy, LSS project selection and prioritisation, selection of top talent for the project execution, leadership for LSS, effective training and design of appropriate curriculum for different LSS roles, development of reward and recognition system, LSS sustainability, Linking LSS with Organisational Learning and Innovation, Linking LSS with Environmental Management System Standards and finally LSS and Big Data. Research limitations/implications: The key features outlined in this paper are based on the practitioners of LSS. The authors of this article are planning to pursue a global study to critically evaluate these commandments by various practitioners of LSS. Originality/value: The senior managers and executives of various businesses can use these commandments of LSS as a guide to achieve and sustain competitive advantage. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Hesitation to adoption in the e-grocery retailing in an emerging market

Research on pharmaceuticals has mainly focused on the needs of developed countries while the scenario in developing countries is unclear. This industry is knowledge-intensive and unusually sensitive to intellectual property rights (IPRs). Patents play very important role in their business and this entails good management practices by the firms from various aspects of patent management. Two dimensions viz. commercialization of patents and renewal of patents are studied in this paper. There is dearth of in-depth research studies on these dimensions of patent management in India. A random sample of 300 granted pharmaceutical patents for patent renewal and another sample of 300 patents selected through purposive sampling for patent commercialization have been drawn from the population of granted pharmaceutical patents by the Indian Patent Office between 2005-06 and 2013-14. The information on working of patents has been taken from Form-27 submitted by the patent assignees of the selected patents. Some of the main findings are: a weak but positive and significant correlation between patent renewal & commercialization, blocking motive is the top most barrier to commercialization, direct contact with the partners is the chief mode of commercialization, no potential for technology is the main reason for non-renewal of patents, and enhancement of reputation is the main reason for renewal. © 2017, Hiroshima University. Commercialization and renewal aspects of patent management in Indian pharmaceutical industry

Opportunistic networks have gained popularity, when we come to conclusion that there are several things which MANET can't handle. Delay tolerant is one of the concepts of opportunistic network in which we connect those nodes which are actually not connected. In our work we are arranging nodes in a hexagonal patterns, the one main node in this pattern is moves in the fixed area i.e. the region that is covered by the ship. This node receives signals from the ship, satellite and sonar device in turn the node amplifies the received signal. Our work is conducted using Spray and wait routing protocol and enhances the protocol. The opportunistic network environment tool is used for simulation. © 2016 IEEE.

Key determinants for purchasing pirated software among students

Reliance Communications Ltd., a large, Indian telecom company has experienced severe financial difficulties brought on by poor management practices, an ill-conceived capital expenditure of more than $6 billion, a debt load of $5.8 billion, and changing industry dynamics. Interestingly, two analysts at a Canadian Investment Research firm gave a "sell" recommendation on the stock with a target price of INR 15 when the stock was trading at INR 93. The analysts also pointed out a possible rip-off of minority shareholders by the firm's founders. The company's stock price fell from a high of INR 844 in 2008 to INR 46 in 2012. The company is in the process of restructuring its assets and liabilities. The case considers the economics of the business from the perspective of shareholders. Students are required to assess the company's performance and decide whether they would invest in the company's shares. The first half of the case describes the company's constituent businesses and the strategy followed by the wireless division. This gives students an opportunity to critique RCL's marketing strategy and pricing of its services. The second half describes the company's financial strategy, the instruments it issued and its restructuring initiatives. The case allows students to examine problems associated with high leverage and the challenges to restructuring in emerging markets. © 2017 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Reliance Communications Ltd.: A House of Cards?

In the vast majority of modern technological and knowledge-intensive production systems, human agency and the structure of social interactions among the human individuals are implicated in each other. While the force of agency drives an individual’s urge to introduce innovation and novelty into production, the force of the structuring interactions demands shared expectations and mutual adaptation for co-creation. In an organizational context, when the objective is to manage production work that is governed by the concurrent interplay of both these forces, one might ask whether the cumulative output of each could be reconciled through the emergence of a stable balance between them over time. In this article, I introduce a framework to study the conditions under which this balance can be attained. Based on a real-life application, I show, in particular, that, while a direct realization of the condition is unlikely in practice, it is possible, nevertheless, to establish indirectly the condition through adjustments of certain parameters relevant to the dynamics of a networked system. The work contributes to the growing body of literature that explores the role of coordination between self-driven activities of individuals and their structure-mediated interactions in an underlying social context. © 2017 Taylor & Francis.

Dynamics of knowledge-intensive production: An agency-structure framework

In November 2012, Wipro Ltd., a NYSE listed IT Services company, announced its plan to demerge the non-IT businesses into an unlisted entity - Wipro Enterprises. The case highlights the governance, valuation, and ethical issues surrounding the demerger. Shareholders were given three options to choose from. But, in reality, they had no choice but to exchange Wipro Enterprises shares that they would receive after the demerger with Wipro Ltd shares because Wipro Enterprises would remain unlisted. The case asks the student to analyze the restructuring from an investor's perspective. The case is especially interesting in that it provides a platform to discuss governance issues in the context of a familyowned public firm. It demonstrates how the preferences of majority shareholders can affect the wealth of minority shareholders. © 2017 World Scientific Publishing Company.
