This paper presents the design of a dual-port dual-band circular polarized annular slot antenna, suitable to use in the feed-back path of an oscillator resulting in an active antenna configuration. The proposed antenna is designed to radiate and transmit equal amounts of power. The return loss of the proposed antenna is higher than that desired for one-port antenna application at the desired dual-band frequencies. The antenna is fabricated on one side of a Neltec substrate (εr=3.2 and thickness = 0.762 mm) and the microstrip feeding line is fabricated on the opposite side of the board. The antenna was designed to operate at WLAN bands centered at 2.4 and 5.2 GHz. The simulated and measured results show fairly good agreement. The measured return losses were found 10 dB at 2.4 GHz and 14.5 dB at 5.2 GHz while simulated return losses were 8.57 dB at 2.4 GHz and 15.2 dB at 5.2 GHz. The radiation pattern is approximately omnidirectional at both frequencies in H-plane. © 2014 IEEE.

Circular polarized dual port annular slot antenna

Recurring biomass burning-induced smoke haze is a serious regional air pollution problem in Southeast Asia (SEA). The June 2013 haze episode was one of the worst air pollution events in SEA. Size segregated particulate samples (2.5-1.0 μm; 1.0-0.5 μm; 0.5- 0.2 μm; and &lt;0.2 μm) were collected during the June 2013 haze episode. PM2.5 concentrations were elevated (up to 329 μg/m3) during the haze episode, compared to those during the nonhaze period (11-21 μg/m3). Chemical fractionation of particulate-bound trace elements (B, Ca, K, Fe, Al, Ni, Zn, Mg, Se, Cu, Cr, As, Mn, Pb, Co, and Cd) was done using sequential extraction procedures. There was a 10-fold increase in the concentration of K, an inorganic tracer of biomass burning. A major fraction (&gt;60%) of the elements was present in oxidizable and residual fractions while the bioavailable (exchangeable) fraction accounted for up to 20% for most of the elements except K and Mn. Deposition of inhaled potentially toxic trace elements in various regions of the human respiratory system was estimated using a Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry model. The particle depositions in the respiratory system tend to be more severe during hazy days than those during nonhazy days. A prolonged exposure to finer particles can thus cause adverse health outcomes during hazy days. Health risk estimates revealed that the excessive lifetime carcinogenic risk to individuals exposed to biomass burning-impacted aerosols (18 ± 1 × 10-6) increased significantly (P &lt; 0.05) compared to those who exposed to urban air (12 ± 2 × 10 -6). © 2014 American Chemical Society.

2013 Southeast Asian smoke haze: Fractionation of particulate-bound elements and associated health risk

The spatial distribution of seismic site coefficients at Guwahati is presented in this article. Estimated site coefficients consider different site types in the city and several level of ground shaking consider average of probable seismic event. The evaluation of site coefficients is based on the standard penetration test data at 105 boreholes distributed over the city. Equivalent linear one dimensional site response analyses are performed to predict the site amplification and to determine the spectral acceleration response. Due to the unavailability of recorded ground motion data for the region, synthetic ground motions simulated at the bedrock level for the city corresponding to several combinations of magnitude (Mw) and source-to-site distance (R) are used as input excitation. Simulated synthetic ground motion data with varying levels of excitation have been used to take care of the uncertainties in the input ground motions. The analyses depict the modification of the seismic ground motion due to the presence of soil overlying the bedrock. © 2014, Capital Publishing Company.

Spatial distribution of seismic site coefficients for Guwahati city

This paper proposes a novel and computationally efficient method of compressive domain sub-band filtering. The technique utilizes the conjugate symmetry property of DFT matrix to achieve sub-band filtering of a wide-band multi-band input signal sensed by the Modulated Wide-band Converter (MWC) architecture. The proposed technique has flexibility of filtering single or multiple sub-bands of a wide-band input signal, which is sparse in frequency domain, without increase in additional computational cost. The filter bandwidth can also be controlled by increasing the number of channels in sensing architecture. The simulation result shown in this paper includes sub-band filtering of a frequency domain sparse multi-band input signal with or without noise. BER performance of a BPSK modulated signal after filtering and demodulation using the proposed technique is also presented to analyze the impact of sub-band filtering. © 2014 IEEE.

Sub-band filtering in compressive domain

This paper proposes a Compressive Signal Processing Receiver based on Modulated Wideband Converter (MWC) sensing architecture and power spectrum estimation method in compressive domain for interference detection and filtering. The proposed receiver uses the signal processing method capable of reconstructing the unknown power spectrum of a signal from the MWC output samples in compressive domain. Interference detection achieved with respect to ITU or service provider defined PFD limits for operating frequency band on per Hz basis for a given receive system. Interference filtering by a novel method of compressive domain filtering which exploits the conjugate symmetry of DFT matrix for modifying the sensing matrix to achieve the sub-band filtering in compressive domain for interference removal is proposed. Proposed receiver is suitable for next generation of wideband satellite transponders. Matlab simulation to verify the proposed algorithm and results are presented. © 2014 IEEE.

<p>Key Issues in Machine Translation Evaluation of English-Indian Languages</p>

This paper examines the effect of outdoor air pollution on respiratory disease in Kanpur, India, based on data from 2006. Exposure to air pollution is represented by annual emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from 11 source categories, established as a geographic information system (GIS)-based emission inventory in 2 km × 2 kmgrid. Respiratory disease is represented by number of patients who visited specialist pulmonary hospital with symptoms of respiratory disease. The results showed that (1) the main sources of air pollution are industries, domestic fuel burning, and vehicles; (2) the emissions of PM per grid are strongly correlated to the emissions of SO2 and NOx; and (3) there is a strong correlation between visits to a hospital due to respiratory disease and emission strength in the area of residence. These results clearly indicate that appropriate health and environmental monitoring, actions to reduce emissions to air, and further studies that would allow assessing the development in health status are necessary. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Respiratory disease in relation to outdoor air pollution in Kanpur, India

The practically important case of a dielectric-loaded tape helix enclosed in a coaxial perfectly conducting cylindrical shell is analysed in this paper. The dielectric-loaded tape helix for guided electromagnetic wave propagation considered here has infinitesimal tape thickness and infinite tape-material conductivity. The homogeneous boundary value problem is solved taking into account the exact boundary conditions similar to the case of anisotropically conducting open tape helix model [1, 2]. The boundary value problem is solved to yield the dispersion equation which takes the form of the solvability condition for an infinite system of linear homogeneous algebraic equations viz., the determinant of the infinite- order coeficient matrix is zero. For the numerical computation of the approximate dispersion characteristic, all the entries of the symmetrically truncated version of the coeficient matrix are estimated by summing an adequate number of the rapidly converging series for them. The tape-current distribution is estimated from the null-space vector of the truncated coeficient matrix corresponding to a specified root of the dispersion equation.

Propagation of electromagnetic waves guided by the anisotropically conducting model of a tape helix supported by dielec- tric rods

In this paper, we propose a novel feature representation for binary patterns by exploiting the object shape information. Initial evaluation of the representation is performed for Bengali and Gujarati script character classification. The extension of the representation for word images is presented subsequently. The proposed feature representation in combination with distance-based hashing is applied for defining novel word image-based document image indexing and retrieval framework. The concept of hierarchical hashing is utilized to reduce the retrieval time complexity. In addition, with the objective of reduction in the size of hashing data structure, the concept of multi-probe hashing is extended for binary mapping functions. The exhaustive experimental evaluation of the proposed framework on a collection of documents belonging to Devanagari, Bengali and English scripts has yielded encouraging results. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Word shape descriptor-based document image indexing: A new DBH-based approach

This paper is focused on printed techniques for the fabrication of hybrid structure of silver (Ag) grid/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): Poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) on polyethylene terepthalate (PET) as a flexible substrate. Ag grid has been printed on PET substrate by using gravure offset printing process, followed by PEDOT:PSS thin film deposition on Ag grid through electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) technique. The important parameters for achieving uniform hybrid structure of Ag grid/PEDOT:PSS through printed techniques have been clearly discussed. Field emission scanning electron microscope studies revealed the uniformity of printed Ag grid with homogeneous deposition of PEDOT:PSS on Ag grid. The optical properties of Ag grid/PEDOT:PSS were measured by UV-visible spectroscopy, which showed nearly 80~82% of transparency in the visible region and it was nearly same as PEDOT:PSS thin film on PET substrate. Current-voltage (I-V ) analysis of fabricated hybrid device by using printed Ag grid/PEDOT:PSS as a bottom electrode showed good rectifying behavior with possible interfacial mechanisms. Capacitance-voltage (C-V ) analysis was carried over different frequencies. These results suggest that fabrication of hybrid structure through printed techniques will play a significant role in mass production of printed electronic devices for commercial application by using flexible substrate.
