Markov games can be used as a platform to deal with exogenous disturbances and parametric variations. In this work an attempt has been made to achieve a superior performance with fuzzy Markov game based control by hybridizing two game theory based approaches of 'fictitious play' and 'minimax'. The work attempts a 'safe yet consistent' Markov game controller which advocates a minimax policy during the startup control stages and later moves to a more enterprising policy based on stochastic fictitious play. The proposed controller addresses continuous state action space problems wherein we use fuzzy inference system as a universal approximator for generalization with a proportional derivative control in the nested position tracking loop. The proposed controller is simulated on a two link robot and its performance compared against fuzzy Markov game control and fuzzy Q control. Simulation results elucidate the fact that proposed control scheme leads to an improved controller with lower tracking error and torque requirements. © 2014 IEEE.

Fictitious play based Markov game control for robotic arm manipulator

An analysis of fatal crashes involving pedestrians in Delhi, India, from 2006 to 2009 that used a geographic information system showed clusters of crashes at certain locations. An evaluation of the characteristics of the built environment around the high crash location clusters was necessary. This paper presents an analysis of the built environment factors that influenced the safety of pedestrians. Locations surveyed included roads around the fatal crash clusters of pedestrians. Factors that influenced the number of fatal crashes of pedestrians were analyzed with negative binomial regression. Types of locations were categorized into locations with a flyover and without a flyover. Results showed that an increase in traffic volume by 1% would increase pedestrian fatal crashes by 1.6% at locations with a flyover and by 0.9% at locations without a flyover. Arterial roads with more traffic volume, more road lanes, and higher speed tended to have more fatal crashes. Locations where medians were fenced or raised in height to prevent pedestrians from crossing were also found to be associated with a greater number of crashes. These findings are useful for improving the safety of pedestrians around specific road infrastructure.

Association between built environment and pedestrian fatal crash risk in Delhi, India

Link prediction problem may be applied in many different domains. In the network, nodes represent authors and a connection between them indicates they coauthored a paper. This paper describes an improved method for predicting possibility of a link between authors. The algorithm is implemented in C# programming language and testing has been performed on Intel Core2Duo processor with 4 GB RAM and 2 GHz processor speed. It was observed that this method shows better performance compared to the previously presented methods. © 2014 IEEE.

Link prediction algorithm for co-authorship networks using Neural Network

Several amino acid anion (aminate) based ionic liquids (ILs) were synthesized, characterized and tested for CO2 absorption capacity. Butylmethyl imidazolium ([bmim]+) was chosen as the cation for all the ILs studied. Among all the aminate-ILs studied, arginate anion ([ARG]) IL has shown more CO2 absorption capacity followed by lysinate ([LYS]) and histidinate ([HIS]) in terms of mol CO2/mol IL. The high CO2 absorption capacity of [ARG] anion was attributed to the availability of more accessible amine (N) groups. The CO2 molar uptake in aminate-ILs studied is in the order of [ARG] (4N)&gt;[LYS] (2N)&gt;[HIS] (3N)&gt;[MET] (1N)&gt;[LEU] (1N)&gt;[GLY] (1N)&gt;[VAL] (1N)&gt;[ALA] (1N)&gt;[PRO] (1N). The FTIR of the CO2 absorbed aminate-ILs confirms the chemical absorption of CO2 through the formation of carbamate species. The aminate-ILs showed higher CO2 solubility compared to amine functionalized cation ILs and non-functionalized ILs. On mass basis (gCO2/kg IL), aminate-ILs showed 70% more CO2 absorption capacity than primary amine-cation ILs, 150% more than tertiary amine-cation ILs and 600% more than non-functionalized ILs. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

CO2 absorption studies in amino acid-anion based ionic liquids

We demonstrate that the coffee ring effect in drying microdroplets is strongly influenced by the topography of the substrate. The fluid motion and particle distribution inside the evaporating droplet were investigated through Particle image Velocimetry (PIV) experiments. Numerical simulations were also performed and the results were compared with the experiments. It was observed that the patterning in the self-assembly can be controlled and is expected to contribute significantly in the fabrication of devices associated with many applications such as sensor, soft lithography and touch screen in smart phones. © 15CBMS-0001.

Microflow and particle transport in sessile evaporating droplet on curved surfaces

Photovoltaic (PV) arrays are susceptible to large amounts of power losses due to partial shading on the array. The power-voltage characteristics of partially shaded array contain multiple local maxima and global maximum power point (GMPP) is one of them. The losses in the PV array depend both, the shadow shape and physical location of the shaded modules. This paper presents an innovative approach to arrange the modules in the array in such a way that there is an increase of power generation of array under partial shading condition. In this approach, without changing the electrical connection of the modules, the physical locations of the modules in Total Crossed Tired (TCT) structure are rearranged. The modules are rearranged in such a way that the shading effect is distributed over the array, and it reduces the shading modules in the same row. The power generation of array with TCT and proposed configuration is compared in this paper. It is demonstrated that the power generation of array with proposed configuration is enhanced under different shading pattern. © 2014 IEEE.

Improvement in the power generation of a PV array under partial shading conditions

The proposed method addresses human action recognition problem in a realistic video. The content of such videos are influenced by irregular background motion and camera shakes. We construct the human pose descriptors by using a modified version of optical flow (we call it as hybrid motion optical flow). We quantize the hybrid motion optical flow (HMOF) into different labels. The orientations of the HMOF vectors are corrected using probabilistic relaxation labelling, where the HMOF vectors with locally maximum magnitude are retained. A sequence of 2D points, called tracks, representing the motion of the person, are constructed. We select top dominant tracks of the sequence based on a cost function. The dominant tracks are further processed to represent the feature descriptor of a given action. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Human action recognition using dominant motion pattern

The long-term performance of any novel material in its working environment is an intriguing area of research. The combined effect of the moisture content (relative humidity) and temperature of the environment degrades the mechanical properties of polymer composites. In the first part of this manuscript, polyurea–polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanocomposites are subjected to continuous hygrothermal cycling. The effects of prolonged hygrothermal aging on the mechanical performance of the composites are evaluated in terms of the change in tensile strength and elongation at failure. Aged composites are subjected to FTIR spectroscopy to study the chemical changes resulting from the hydrolysis of polyurea. In the second part, attempts are made to study the effect of the addition of POSS nanoreinforcement on the mechanical properties of the resulting composite materials using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Results obtained here show poor agreement between MD simulation results and results obtained using dynamic mechanical analysis studies. However, qualitatively, both simulation and experimental results exhibit similar effects due to addition of POSS nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of polyurea–POSS nanocomposites.

Algorithm to deal with very large and very small numbers to enable utilization of analytical solution of free radical polymerization during gel effect

During the winding process of a transformer, a residual strain is induced in its windings conductors. In this paper, the effect of the strain on the mechanical strength of transformer windings under the worst case condition of the short circuit has been investigated. The distribution of the residual strain in the conductors during its winding process has been determined analytically. The strain induced in the conductors under the action of radial short-circuit forces has been computed. The two strains are then added to obtain a resulting strain. By using the Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain relation of the conductor (copper) material, resulting stress is determined. A case study has been given where the presence of residual strain in the conductors of a power transformer has been taken into account for determining its mechanical strength under the worst case condition of short circuit. © 2015 IEEE.
