Password Hashing is the technique of performing one-way transformation of the password. One of the requirements of password hashing algorithms is to be memory demanding to provide defense against hardware attacks. In practice, most Cryptographic designs are implemented inside a Cryptographic module, as suggested by NIST in a set of standards (FIPS 140). A cryptographic module has a limited memory and this makes it challenging to implement a password hashing scheme (PHS) inside it. In this work, we propose a novel approach to allow a limited memory cryptographic module to be used in the implementation of a high memory password hashing algorithm. We also analyze all the first round entries of the Password Hashing Competition (PHC) to evaluate the suitability of the submitted algorithms to be implemented with a Cryptographic module. We graphically show that the submissions to the PHC can be securely implemented in a crypto-module following our suggestion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt in the direction of secure implementation of password hashing algorithms. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Cryptographic module based approach for password hashing schemes

We consider robust knapsack problems where item weights are uncertain. We are allowed to query an item to find its exact weight,where the number of such queries is bounded by a given parameter Q. After these queries are made, we need to pack the items robustly, i.e., so that the choice of items is feasible for every remaining possible scenario of item weights. The central question that we consider is: Which items should be queried in order to gain maximum profit? We introduce the notion of query competitiveness for strict robustness to evaluate the quality of an algorithm for this problem, and obtain lower and upper bounds on this competitiveness for interval-based uncertainty. Similar to the study of online algorithms, we study the competitiveness under different frameworks, namely we analyze the worst-case query competitiveness for deterministic algorithms, the expected query competitiveness for randomized algorithms and the average case competitiveness for known distributions of the uncertain input data. We derive theoretical bounds for these different frameworks and evaluate them experimentally. We also extend this approach to Γ-restricted uncertainties introduced by Bertsimas and Sim. Furthermore, we present heuristic algorithms for the problem. In computational experiments considering both the interval-based and the Γ-restricted uncertainty, we evaluate their empirical performance. While the usage of a Γ-restricted uncertainty improves the nominal performance of a solution (as expected), we find that the query competitiveness gets worse. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The robust knapsack problem with queries

The most reliable method used to estimate deep percolation is using Lysimeter which proves to be expensive and time consuming as well. In this study, deep percolation has been estimated by using water balance method. The experimental setup consisted of two lysimeters in the Hydraulic Engineering field lab, I.I.T., Roorkee in which maize crop was grown. Regular measurements of soil moisture were made at the depths 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, 40- 60 cm, 60-80 cm and 80-100 cm using gravimetric method. The evapotranspiration estimates were determined using Penman-Moneith equation. The deep percolation is calculated using the water-balance approach. The deep percolation calculated using the water-balance approach is comparable to the observed values of deep percolation which are obtained from the lysimeters.

Estimation of Deep Percolation in Sandy-Loam Soil using Water-balance Approach

Pseudospark (PS) discharge is promising source for high brightness and high intensity electron beam pulses. In the present paper, an effort has been made to analyse the temporal behaviour of discharge current, applied voltage, plasma density in the PS discharge based PCE-Gun at different hollow cathode aperture sizes using 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code "VORPAL". The peak discharge current in the PS discharge is a function of hollow cathode dimensions. The plasma generation process by self ionization discharge is examined at different operating conditions. Argon is taken as the background neutral gas. It has been observed that the decrease in the aperture size from 8 mm to 3 mm increases the discharge current, the electron confinement time and the plasma density. © 2015, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR). Particle-in-cell simulation study of PCE-gun for different hollow cathode aperture sizes

In this paper we propose an adaptive channel estimation scheme for Amplify and Forward (AF) two-way relay systems with frequency selective and fast varying channels. The modulation used is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). This adaptive filter is called Block Fast Array Multichannel 2D Recursive Least Square (BFAM 2D-RLS) filter. The complexity of this adaptive filter is comparable to that of Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm while maintaining similar convergence rate as that of the standard Recursive Least Mean Square (RLS) algorithm. Computer simulation using Matlab is performed to analyse the performance of BFAM 2D-RLS filter in estimating fast varying Vehicular-A (Veh-A) channel. The results obtained is compared with slow varying channels. © 2015 IEEE.

BFAM 2D-RLS channel estimation for frequency selective environment in two-way relay

We investigate the role of viscous forces on the wetting of hydrophobic, semi-hydrophobic, and hydrophilic textured surfaces as second-order effects. We show that during the initial contact, the transition from inertia-to viscous-dominant regime occurs regardless of their surface topography and chemistry. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effect of viscosity on the apparent contact angle under quasi-static conditions by modulating the ratio of a water/glycerol mixture and show the effect of viscosity, especially on the semi-hydrophobic and hydrophobic textured substrates. The reason why the viscous force does not affect the apparent contact angle of the hydrophilic surface is explained based on the relationship between the disjoining pressure and surface chemistry. We further propose a wetting model that can predict the apparent contact angle of a liquid drop on a textured substrate by incorporating a viscous force component in the force balance equation. This model can predict apparent contact angles on semi-hydrophobic and hydrophobic textured surfaces exhibiting Wenzel state more accurately than the Wenzel model, indicating the importance of viscous forces in determining the apparent contact angle. The modified model can be applied for estimating the wetting properties of arbitrary engineered surfaces.

Role of Viscous Dissipative Processes on the Wetting of Textured Surfaces

This paper studies the use of light-emitting diode (LED) as an excitation source for photothermal lock-in experiments, and investigates the energy absorption efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio of the established setup. Existing lock-in excitation sources usually use high power (in the range of kilowatt) halogen lamps. The present LED excitation source has an advantage of low power consumption making the setup much more energy efficient. Another advantage of LED in this paper is their low infrared (IR) content, in contrast to halogen lamps, the IR content gets reflected into the IR camera, and leads to an unpredicted change in phase image in lock-in thermography. © 2015 IEEE.

Characterization and Energy Absorption Efficiency Determination of LED as an Effective Photothermal Excitation Source in Lock-In Thermography

A technique for wavelength measurement of microwaves is demonstrated. The wavelength is obtained from an interference pattern monitored by an IR Camera. The data captured by the camera is stored in a computer attached to it. This data is then processed for wavelength calculation. In order to show the utility of the above technique, two cases are demonstrated: Case (1) Interference pattern of two patch antennas each radiating at 8 GHz. Case (2) Interference pattern from a single antenna, radiating at 12 Ghz, kept in front of a metallic sheet with two slits. The simulation is carried in CST Microwave Studio software. A good agreement between simulation and experimental results is seen. © 2015 IEEE.

Infrared thermography for determination of wavelength of microwave signals from interference pattern

In this paper, we evaluate and compare the performances of Viterbi decoding schemes based on soft decision and hard decisions, with results applicable to the Digital Video Broadcast-Terrrestial (DVB-T) standard. The standard suggests that the BER ≤ 2 × 10-4 at the decoder output is good enough for the quasi error-free condition. We assume that the channel state information (CSI) of all sub-carriers are available at the receiver at all times. The multipath fading is assumed to be Rayleigh type. Simulation results confirm the advantage of using soft-decision decoding over the hard-decision type. Approximate Eb/N0 gains in the range 3-4.5 dB are reported for the different choices of code rates and OFDM transmission modes available in the standard.

A simulation study of performance of joint soft demapping-viterbi decoding in DVB-T system

The explosive growth of social network with the help of e-commerce websites has made the issue of information retrieval increasingly challenging. Users may not have the time or knowledge to personally evaluate the options which are available on social network platform. Recommender systems present themselves as a practical answer to endless options available online. In this research paper, we give an insight into various types of filtering techniques associated with recommender systems. We also discuss the problems faced by these filtering techniques and evaluation criteria on the basis of which various algorithms made for recommendation purpose can be compared. Finally we propose a composite news recommendation system model. © 2015 IEEE.
