In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effect of packing factor of photovoltaic (PV) module on the performance of hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) greenhouse solar dryer. Different parameters have been evaluated for climatic condition of Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi (28-350N, 77-120E, 216 m above MSL), India. For the analysis solar radiation and ambient air temperature have been taken from IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) Pune. Further thermal modelling has been done for the PVT greenhouse dryer and different parameter like crop temperature, greenhouse temperature, outlet air temperature and cell temperature have been calculated with variation of packing factor of PV module by the help of MATLAB program. Further effect of packing factor on thermal energy, electrical energy, overall thermal energy, cell efficiency have been evaluated. Variation in thermal energy, electrical energy, and overall thermal energy with respect to packing factor found to be 3.66-2.05, 0-0.92 and 3.66-4.47 kWh respectively for a typical day of June. © 2016 IEEE.

In this work two isomeric copolymers of benzodithiophene and BODIPY have been designed and synthesized. Structural isomeric polymers were designed such that one of the polymers exhibits more planar architecture, which would help in understanding the effect of structural isomerism and planarity in the polymer backbone on charge carrier mobility. Structural differences in of both these structures were also studied using DFT and TDDFT calculations. © 2016 IEEE.

Effect of structural isomerism on charge transport in copolymer of BODIPY and Benzodithiophene

The proposed research aims to integrate contextual information with tourist spot recommender system. Ubiquitous crowdsourcing model has been used for collecting the contextual information using fuzzy linguistic values in current time. The existing tourist spot recommender systems give list tourist spots along with their ratings. Proposed model takes this list as an input and the current fuzzy contextual information collected from crowd present at the spot and computes a new score for each spot/location. This new score not only conveys the popularity of a spot in vicinity but also advices whether this spot is worth visiting at given point in time. A prototype system has been implemented using java and MATLAB and is evaluated by 104 real users. Copyright © 2016 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Ubiquitous crowdsourcing model for fuzzy information enrichment of tourist spot recommender system

Performance of a production system depends on breakdown-free operation of equipment and processes. Maintenance and quality control play an important role in achieving this goal. This paper presents an integrated model for joint optimization of preventive maintenance and quality control policy with cumulative sum (CUSUM) control chart parameters. Two types of maintenance policies are considered, namely minimal corrective maintenance and imperfect preventive maintenance. The proposed model enables the determination of the optimal value of each of the five decision variables, i.e. sample size (n), sample interval (h), the reference value (K), the decision interval (h1) and preventive maintenance interval (tPM), that minimize the expected total system cost per unit time. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the effect of the cost parameters on the integrated design of preventive maintenance and quality control policy. It also compares the system performance employing the proposed integrated approach with that obtained by considering maintenance and CUSUM chart independently. Substantial economic benefit of 19 \% is seen in the joint optimization. © 2015, Springer-Verlag London.

Integrated design of preventive maintenance and quality control policy parameters with CUSUM chart

Atmospheric particulate mercury (PHg) is recognized as a global pollutant that requires regulation because of its significant impacts on both human health and wildlife. The haze episodes that occur frequently in China could influence the transport and fate of PHg. To examine the characteristics of PHg during haze and non-haze days, size-fractioned particles were collected using thirteen-stage Nano-MOUDI samplers (10 nm-18 μm) during a severe haze episode (from December 2013 to January 2014) in Shanghai. The PHg concentration on haze days (4.11 ± 0.53 ng m-3) was three times higher than on non-haze days (1.34 ± 0.15 ng m-3). The ratio of the PHg concentration to total gaseous mercury (TGM) ranged from 0.42 during haze days to 0.21 during non-haze days, which was possibly due to the elevated concentration of particles for gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) adsorption, elevated sulfate and nitrate contributing to GEM oxidation, and the catalytic effect of elevated water-soluble inorganic metal ions. PHg/PM10 during haze days (0.019 ± 0.004 ng/μg) was lower than during non-haze days (0.024 ± 0.002 ng/μg), and PHg/PM10 was significantly reduced with an increasing concentration of PM10, which implied a relatively lower growth velocity of mercury than other compositions on particles during haze days, especially in the diameter range of 0.018-0.032 μm.During haze days, each size-fractioned PHg concentration was higher than the corresponding fraction on non-haze days, and the dominant particle size was in the accumulation mode, with constant accumulation to a particle size of 0.56-1.0 μm. The mass size distribution of PHg was bimodal with peaks at 0.32-0.56 μm and 3.1-6.2 μm on non-haze days, and 0.56-1.0 μm and 3.1-6.2 μm on haze days. There was a clear trend that the dominant size for PHg in the fine modes shifted from 0.32-0.56 μm during non-haze days to 0.56-1.0 μm on haze days, which revealed the higher growth velocity of PHg on haze days due to the condensation and accumulation of Hg in particles. Traffic emissions and coal combustion may contribute to the high concentrations of Hg, because PHg of every size was found to correlate positively with SO2, NO2, and CO. A correlation was found between every mode of PHg and relative humidity, which affected the gas-particle partitioning of semi-volatile organic compounds, resulting in effective partitioning into aerosols. The strong correlations between Hg and water-soluble ions implied the oxidation of elemental Hg was the main gas-to-particle chemical transformation process. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.

Characteristics of atmospheric particulate mercury in size-fractionated particles during haze days in Shanghai

In this work, we have studied the fluorescence quenching and solid state diffusion of 2, 3, 5, 6-tetrafluoro-7, 7′, 8, 8′-tetracyano quinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Quenching studies were performed with tris (8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (Alq3) in solid state samples. Thickness of F4-TCNQ was varied in order to realize different concentrations and study the effect of concentration. PL intensity has reduced with the increase in F4-TCNQ thicknesses. Stern-Volmer and bimolecular quenching constants were evaluated to be 13.8 M-1 and 8.7 × 108 M-1 s-1, respectively. The quenching mechanism was found to be of static type, which was inferred by the independent nature of excited state life time from the F4-TCNQ thickness. Further, solid state diffusion of F4-TCNQ was studied by placing a spacing layer of α-NPD between F4-TCNQ and Alq3, and its thickness was varied to probe the diffusion length. PL intensity was found to increase with the increase in this thickness. Quenching efficiency was evaluated as a function of distance between F4-TCNQ and Alq3. These studies were performed for the samples having 1, 2.5, and 5.5 nm thicknesses of F4-TCNQ to study the thickness dependence of diffusion length. Diffusion lengths were evaluated to be 12.5, 15, and 20 nm for 1, 2.5, and 5.5 nm thicknesses of F4-TCNQ. These diffusion lengths were found to be very close to that of determined by secondary ion mass spectroscopy technique. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Study of fluorescence quenching due to 2, 3, 5, 6-tetrafluoro-7, 7′, 8, 8′-tetracyano quinodimethane and its solid state diffusion analysis using photoluminescence spectroscopy

We demonstrate white organic light emitting diodes with enhanced efficiency (26.8 lm/W) and life time (∼11 000 h) by improved heat dissipation through encapsulation composed of a metal (Cu, Mo, and Al) and mica sheet joined using thermally conducting epoxy. Finite element simulation is used to find effectiveness of these encapsulations for heat transfer. Device temperature is reduced by about 50% with the encapsulation. This, consequently, has improved efficiency and life time by about 30% and 60%, respectively, with respect to glass encapsulation. Conductive cooling of device is suggested as the possible cause for this enhancement. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Conductive cooling in white organic light emitting diode for enhanced efficiency and life time

The beam width of microwave antennas can be easily determined using infrared thermography. A thin absorption screen made up of some carbon loaded polymer is placed in front of a microwave antenna. The electromagnetic waves impinging the screen are partially absorbed by it, resulting in temperature rise of this screen. This temperature rise is monitored by an infrared camera. These infra red images of the temperature distribution are identical to the power distribution of the incident electromagnetic field at the screen location. The distance between half power points on the main lobe of the radiation pattern at the screen location in two orthogonal directions (E- and H-planes) can be easily found. From these distances the half power beam widths in both E- and H-planes can be calculated. Further from these beam widths, directivity is also calculated. The experiments were carried with a patch antenna radiating at 2.45 GHz. In order to show the repeatability of the results, experiments were carried for different distances between patch antenna and absorption screen. A great agreement is seen between simulation, measurement and experimental (thermographic) results. The microwave source is modulated at a low frequency so as to avoid the lateral spread of heat on the absorption screen and to permit lock-in detection of temperature distribution. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Beam width estimation of microwave antennas using lock-in infrared thermography

This paper presents a case for extension of structural health monitoring (SHM) technologies to offer solutions for biomedical problems. SHM research has made remarkable progreß during the last two/ three decades. These technologies are now being extended for poßible applications in the bio-medical field. Especially, smart materials, such as piezo-electric ceramic (PZT) patches and fibre-Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, offer a new set of poßibilities to the bio-medical community to augment their conventional set of sensors, tools and equipment. The paper presents some of the recent extensions of SHM, such as condition monitoring of bones, monitoring of dental implant post surgery and foot preßure measurement. Latest developments, such as non-bonded configuration of PZT patches for monitoring bones and poßible applications in osteoporosis detection, are also discußed. In eßence, there is a whole new gamut of new poßibilities for SHM technologies making their foray into the bio-medical sector. © 2015 SPIE.
