This paper proposes an approach for detection and tracking of multiple objects in a video. We detect multiple objects in the frames using an improved version of the Viola-Jones face-detector, extract Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) from the detected objects and initialize an improved version of the Kanade-Lucas-Tomashi (KLT) tracker to track the objects throughout the video. We use Gradient Weighted Optical Flow (GWOF) feature to detect both the static and moving objects. The improvement over the KLT tracker is done using the GWOF measure, enabling the tracking system to work in videos with camera shaking. The proposed object tracking method is capable of dealing with multiple challenges like illumination changes, variable and uneven background and poor lighting condition. The efficacy of the proposed approach is tested on challenging datasets like ALOV++ and Honda/UCSD, compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2015 IEEE.

Multiple object tracking by improved KLT tracker over SURF features

This study presents a novel approach to estimate the maximum power point (MPP) of a photovoltaic (PV) array on an hourly basis using meteorological data. The estimation of MPP of a PV array based on its characteristic equation is done by using Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) method. The monthly averaged daily and hourly global solar irradiation during sunshine hours of Guwahati city is estimated by taking relative humidity and ambient temperature data using empirical relations. The actual and estimated maximum powers of a PV array of monthly averaged daily and hourly basis is calculated using MATLAB. It is demonstrated that each of the estimated maximum power of a PV array on an hourly basis is nearly equal to each of the actual maximum power. The MPP of a PV module estimated by the LM method is validated with the actual and experimental results. A comparative study of MPP of a PV module estimated from the proposed method with perturb-and-observe based on proportional-integral, genetic algorithm and Gauss-Seidel is performed. The performance of the proposed algorithm for estimation of MPP of a PV array ensures the accuracy and faster convergence. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2016.

Numerical approach to estimate the maximum power point of a photovoltaic array

Photoconductive Antenna(PCA) is considered to be very simple and compact Terahertz (THz) generation source based on opto-electrical conversion method. In recent years, several experimental and simulation studies have been performed to analyze a PCA behavior. However, an accurate equivalent electrical circuit model is needed for theoretical analysis of a PCA. As the electrode gap region of PCA can be modeled as a charged capacitor, this work deals with the calculation of time dependent capacitance of a pulsed PCA system. The analysis of time dependent capacitance provides a better understanding of carrier dynamics in PCA and also helps in creating an accurate equivalent electrical circuit of PCA. © 2015 IEEE.

Time dependent capacitance in Photoconductive Antenna

A location-based social network is a network representation of social relations among actors, which not only allow them to connect to other users/friends but also they can share and access their physical locations. Here, the physical location consists of the instant location of an individual at a given timestamp and the location history that an individual has accumulated in a certain period. This paper aimed to capture this spatiotemporal social network (STS) data of location-based social networks and model it. In this paper, we propose a STS data model which captures both non-spatial and spatial properties of moving users, connected on social network. In our model, we define data types and operations that make querying spatiotemporal social network data easy and efficient. We extend spatiotemporal data model for moving objects proposed in Ferreira et al. (Trans GIS 18(2):253–269, 2014) for social networks. The data model infers individual’s location history and helps in querying social network users for their spatiotemporal locations, social links, influences, their common interests, behavior, activities, etc. We show the some results of applying our data model on a spatiotemporal dataset (GeoLife) and two large real-life spatiotemporal social network datasets (Gowalla, Brightkite) collected over a period of two years. We apply the proposed model to determine interesting locations in the city and correlate the impact of social network relationships on the spatiotemporal behavior of the users. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Wien.

Spatiotemporal social (STS) data model: correlating social networks and spatiotemporal data

Food is necessity for human being. As the world population is increasing, it is very difficult to fulfil everyone's need of food. One of the alternatives of this problem is the preservation of crops, vegetable and fruits when it is available in abundant amount. Drying is one of the best methods to preserve agricultural products for long time but it requires lot of energy. As availability of electricity per capita in developing and under developed countries is very less, thus the electricity uses for heating purpose cannot be economically and environmentally justified option. So entrapment of thermal energy from solar radiation may be the best option for drying. Solar energy can be utilized for drying in different ways namely open sun drying and closed drying (direct and indirect). Open sun drying have various disadvantages like contamination of dust particles, bacteria in crop, decolouration of the product after drying etc. To overcome these problems greenhouse drying or closed drying has been developed. This review is an attempt to explore different types of drying systems was developed across the world. Further different thermal modelling, mathematical modelling and performance evaluation on the basis of characteristic curve have been discussed. One of the thermal modelling has been discussed in detail to evaluate heat transfer coefficient, heat absorbed and moisture evaporate with experimental validation to give practical exposure to the researchers. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Development and recent trends in greenhouse dryer: A review

Gaseous toxic air pollutants are normally associated with acute short-term and chronic long-term health effects, and hence measurement of these pollutants is essential on a daily basis to understand the science of their occurrences. In this study, gaseous O3, SO2, NO2, NH3, HNO2, HNO3, and HCl and water-soluble inorganic ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4 +, NO3 -, SO4 2-, and Cl-) in PM2.5 were measured during a summer in Kanpur, India, using an annular denuder technique on a time resolution of 12 h. The denuder technique revealed that evaporation losses of NH4 +, Cl-, and NO3 - from a Teflon filter and trapped in nylon filters were temperature sensitive. The evaporation losses were 17.8 ± 8.7%, 29.5 ± 19.3%, and 37.1 ± 25.9% during daytime, and 10.2 ± 6.4%, 17.7 ± 10.1%, and 19.3 ± 12.2% during nighttime for NH4 +, Cl-, and NO3 -, respectively. Overall, 24 h average concentrations of O3, SO2, NO2, NH3, HNO2, HNO3, and HCl were 49.6, 8.6, 34.2, 21.5, 3.6, 9.8, and 1.4 μgm-3, respectively; and 2.1, 1.5, 2.9, 1.1, 13.1, 12.9, 19.7, and 1.3 μgm-3 were observed for Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4 +, NO3 -, SO4 2-, and Cl-, respectively, in PM2.5. Levels of O3, NH3, HNO2, HNO3, PM2.5, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NO3 -, and SO4 2- showed significant diurnal variations at 95% confidence level. However, SO2, NO2, HCl, Na+, NH4 +, and Cl- did not show any significant diurnal variations. Ion balance showed that an abundant quantity of NH3 was present in the study area to neutralize H2SO4, HNO3, and HCl to form (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, and NH4Cl, and thermodynamics for the formation of NH4NO3 was favored under more humid conditions. © 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Characterization of gaseous pollutants and water-soluble inorganic ions in PM2.5 during Summer time at an urban site of North India

The Power quality has become one of the most vital issue to both electric utilities and end level users of electric power. Automation has completely changed the load nature due to widespread use of power electronic based drives such as adjustable speed drives, Energy efficient lighting, PC's, office accessories etc. All power electronic based sensitive equipments are the major fatalities of power quality problems such as voltage Sag, Swell, Waveform distortion, Poor power factor etc. In this paper, a three phase three wire Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) which is fed by Photovoltaic (PV) array is proposed for power quality improvement. The DSTATCOM is a three leg voltage source Inverter (VSI) with a DC link capacitor. Photovoltaic module is used to keep regulate the desired voltage at DC link. The Power quality improvement is achieved in terms of reactive power compensation, Power factor correction, Harmonic reduction, DC voltage control. In this paper, the performance of DSTATCOM is shown for Power factor correction(PFC) and Zero voltage regulation (ZVR) modes using d-q and p-q theories of control. The effectiveness of the PV based DSTATCOM is verified with simulation results. The simulation is carried out on MATLAB software using Simulink and PSB toolboxes. © 2015 IEEE.

Performance analysis of photovoltaic based DSTATCOM using SRF and IRP control theory1

The p-type semiconducting properties of a triphenylene-fused triindole mesogen, have been studied by applying two complementary methods which have different alignment requirements. The attachment of only three flexible alkyl chains to the nitrogen atoms of this π-extended core is sufficient to induce columnar mesomorphism. High hole mobility values (0.65 cm2 V-1 s-1) have been estimated by space-charge limited current (SCLC) measurements in a diode-like structure which are easily prepared from the melt, rendering this material a good candidate for OPVs and OLEDs devices. The mobility predicted theoretically via a hole-hopping mechanism is in very good agreement with the experimental values determined at the SCLC regime. On the other hand the hole mobility determined on solution processed thin film transistors (OFETs) is significantly lower, which can be rationalized by the high tendency of these large molecules to align on surfaces with their extended π-conjugated core parallel to the substrate as demonstrated by SERS. Despite the differences obtained with the two methods, the acceptable performance found on OFETs fabricated by simple drop-casting processing of such an enlarged aromatic core is remarkable and suggests facile hopping between neighboring molecular columns owing to the large conducting/isolating ratio found in this discotic compound. © 2016 American Chemical Society.

Mobility versus Alignment of a Semiconducting π-Extended Discotic Liquid-Crystalline Triindole

Two regioisomeric triads D-A1-D and D-A2-D composed of benzodithiophene donors and BODIPY acceptors were synthesized and exhibited spectral coverage up to 700 nm due to efficient intramolecular charge transfer. Structural differences and planarity of these triads lead to distinct photoinduced electron transfer characteristics and charge carrier mobilities of up to ∼10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Regioisomeric donor-acceptor-donor triads based on benzodithiophene and BODIPY with distinct optical properties and mobilities

Rotating biological contactors (RBCs) are low-cost, efficient and an eco-friendly volatile organics control technique. In this study, a state-of-art disk-based RBC has been modified to a drum-based with sponge supporting medium and its performance at different inlet loading rates (ILR) of gaseous benzene, and its effect on elimination capacity (EC) and removal efficiency (RE) have been investigated. The results showed that the RE remained over 90% up to the ILR of about 8 g m-3 h-1, and decreased to about 80% with the further increase in ILR. The EC reached maximum to about 45 g m-3 h-1 at a benzene load of about 69 g m-3 h-1. The EC of benzene increased with the increase in loading rate, but the RE showed an opposite trend. The production of carbon dioxide, which determines the degree of pollutant degradability, also increased with the increase in EC. Along with benzene the nutrients (NH3-N and PO4-P) from liquid phase also got removed in RBC, which shows its potential application in industries. Furthermore, a potential benzene degrader was tentatively identified as genera Enterobacter. The maximum biodegradation rate (rmax) and half saturation constant (Ks) were determined as 21.46 g m-3 h-1 and 1.71 g m-3, respectively. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
