Application of Marshall's and Davison's model order reduction methods to approximate a large dynamic system requires determination of the order up to which the model can tolerably be reduced and selection of eigen values and state variables to be retained in the model. This paper establishes the integral square error and the integral absolute error criteria for the selection of eigen values and determination of the order of the Marshall's reduced model. A suitable criterion for the Davison's reduced order model has also been derived.

SELECTION OF EIGEN VALUES FOR REDUCED ORDER MODELS.

This paper describes the Fortran program which first selects optimum bolt size and then performs the flange design. Several different flange types can be accommodated. The program has been organized into a MAIN program and four subroutines (STRESS, FACTSF, FACTFV, SOLVE) as shown in Fig. 1. The flow chart for the MAIN program is given in Fig. 2.

Experiments on solidification with natural convection in a rectangular enclosed region

An analysis is carried out for the solidification in a rectangular enclosure whose top and bottom surfaces are kept adiabaticand sides are kept at a constant temperature. The transient effects of solidification accompanied by natural convection have been studied in detail. The governing equations are written for the temperature, vorticity, stream function and velocity in the melt along with the heat conduction equations through the solid and the mold. The non-linear coupled equations have been non-dimensionalized and solved with the aid of the Alternating Direction Implicit finite difference method. The velocity profiles in the melt, and the temperature distribution in the melt, the solid and the mold are shown. Isotherms and streamlines in the melt are plotted for different Rayleigh numbers. The dependence of the melt-solid interface movement upon various non-dimensional parameters, such as Rayleigh number (5 × 102-5/s 105 Prandtl number (0.1-100), aspect ratio (1.1-5.5), Stefan number (0.5-10) and a parameter indicating the effect of superheat (0.67-2.33) are also studied. © 1982.

In this paper, an implementation scheme involving decoders and residue adders has been suggested to convert input data in fixed radix representation to residue representation. A method dealing with the reverse process is also demonstrated. A comparison has been made with the methods known hitherto. © 1982.

Effects of concentration and seeding on the solidification fouling of paraffin wax from hydrocarbons

Solidification fouling of paraffin wax from a solution in kerosene has been studied in a stirred system where a refrigerant was circulated through a surrounding jacket. The system is unique since it permits the study of the effects of varying shear stress on the deposit in one experiment and thus obviates the need of doing several experiments as in the case of flow through tubes. Effects of rotation speed and wall temperature have been studied. The results indicate that the shear stress has a profound influence on the deposit thickness. Based upon the experimental observations, the initial deposition is hypothesized to be diffusion controlled instead of particulate migration controlled. © 1982.
