Rainfall increased the severity of leaf blight caused by Cylindrocladium quinqueseptatum [Calonectria quinqueseptata] on Eucalyptus tereticornis and the disease further intensified when an intercrop (taungya) of Manihot utilissima [M. esculenta] was cultivated in a 2-yr-old plantation in Kothamangalam Forest Division, Kerala, in 1982-83. Zingiber officinale had already been raised as a first year taungya crop in 1981-82. Severity of the disease was positively correlated with high rainfall pattern, while high relative humidity appeared to have little impact on disease severity.

Malleo-proteins from synthetic broth mallein of six strains of Pseudomonas mallei were separated by trichloroacetic acid precipitation, amonium sulfate precipitation and Ultrogel AcA 34 gel filtration chromatography. When tested comparatively with Dutch PPD mallein as standard on P. mallei-sensitized and normal horses all the strains were found to be malleinogenic, trichloroactive acid precipitated proteins were comparable to Dutch PPD mallein in potency and innocuity whereas ammonium sulfate-precipitated proteins elicited non-specific reactions. Ultrogel AcA 34 chromatographed high molecular weight proteins (MW range > 350 000) were having equal or higher potency and without adverse reactions and low molecular weight proteins (MW range 120 000-170 000) nearly inactive. Ultrogel AcA 34 column fractionation studeis revealed that mallein activity was associated with high molecular weight proteins and represented a purer sensitin than PPD mallein for the purpose of mallein test. {\textcopyright} 1994.

Distribution of intestinal parasitic infections in selected areas in District Puri, Orissa (India).

A survey of 2- to 8-year-old Acacia mangium plantations in Peninsular Malaysia revealed a high incidence of heart rot ranging from 48.5 to 97.9%. Incidence of rot was correlated with the age of trees but not with site, seed source or pruning treatment. The heart rot occurred either in isolated pockets or throughout the length of the tree bole. Seven morphologically different types of rot recognised were honeycomb rot, spongy rot, spongy rot with zone lines, wet fibrous rot, white fibrous rot, brittle rot and pink pocket rot. Twenty five different Hymenomycete fungi were isolated from these rots. Only Phellinus noxius was always found associated with honeycomb rot. Although the percentage of wood volume loss due to heart rot was generally less than 10, its occurrence especially in the first six metre log possibly affected the quality of sawlogs to be produced from these plantations. In view of the susceptibility of A. mangium to heart rot and the severity of the rot, the Malaysian government is reviewing its Compensatory Forest Plantation Programme to include planting other exotic and indigenous species apart from A. mangium.
