The chapter traces the development of Recalling Jewish Calcutta, an early example of a digital public memory project that houses artefacts pertaining to the history and memory of the Jewish community in the city of Calcutta. As a collaborative project, it sees the active participation of independent researchers, academics with institutional affiliations, students, and the wider public. In the building of this project, several lessons are learnt; this chapter provides a reflection on those issues and locates three pedagogical moments to illustrate the importance of practice-based scholarship. The first discusses the value of digital collections and the need for openness in scholarship; the second focuses on the transition of the digital humanist from a user of electronic resources to a maker of electronic collections; the third reminds us of the fragility of digital resources and highlights the need for infrastructural support.

Albums in the attic. An Investigation of photographic metadata

Letters of 1916 is Ireland's first public engagement digital humanities project. Begun in September 2013, it collects, digitises, transcribes, encodes and makes available through its electronic platform epistolary documents written about Ireland between 1 November 1915 and 31 October 1916. This paper analyses the volunteer community associated with the project, inspects the levels of its engagement, studies its interests and motivations and considers how future projects can adapt this investigation into projects addressing community interactions. The basis for this inspection is a user survey carried out in Spring 2016, alongside an analysis of the transcriber community using data on transcriber activity from the beginning of the project in September 2013 to June 2016. The paper argues that the success of a public engagement project lies in the understanding of its community—an understanding derived within a critical framework, inspected through data analysis and communicated through visualisations.

The Aftermath of Digitization: Studying the Synecdochic Photograph from the British Raj

This article examines how archives fail during moments of extreme political trauma, focusing on the Indian Emergency (1975–77). It argues that the traditional archive, reliant on official records, often cannot capture the complexity of such events. Instead, it proposes a broader approach that draws on films, oral testimonies, and anecdotes to reconstruct historical memory. These alternative media forms, though fragmentary, help create a more honest and layered account of the past. The article also explores how public memory projects and digital archives offer new ways of documenting and engaging with history when material records are absent or incomplete.
