Two components self-assembly of a Pd4 neutral molecular rectangle driven by Pd–O bond coordination has been achieved and this $\Pi$-electron rich rectangle shows fluorescence quenching in presence of nitroaromatics, which are the chemical signatures of many explosives. {\textcopyright} 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
