The term Phylogentics is the study of evolutionary relationship between different species, organisms or genes. These relationships are depicted as branched, tree like diagrams that provide insight into the events that occurred during the evolution process. These trees may also have a root which is known as the common ancestor. Building the "Tree of Life" has been the prime objective of many researchers, until it was proved that the tree of life cannot be represented by a single? tree. Many evolutionary events cannot be represented with the help of a simple tree, hence phylogenetic networks came into picture. Phylogenetic networks can be classified into different categories. In this paper, an algorithm (ReTF) has been proposed which would improve the results of the current phylogenetic network reconstruction algorithms. The idea behind ReTF is rearranging the input sequences in a way that the new arrangement gives a better tree, since the order of input sequences affects the outcomes of phylogenetic network. © 2013 IEEE.

Reconstructing phylogenetic network with ReTF algorithm (rearranging transcriptional factor)

The Cell Broadband Engine (CBE) is a heterogeneous multicore architecture developed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba. A CBE (Figure 10.1) consists of a Power PC (PPU) core, eight Synergistic Processing Elements or Units (SPEs or SPUs), and associated memory-transfer mechanisms [14]. The SPUs are connected in a ring topology, and each SPU has its own local store. However, SPUs have no local cache and no branch-prediction logic. Data may be moved between an SPU’s local store and central memory via a DMA transfer, which is handled by a Memory Flow Control (MFC). Since the MFC runs independent of the SPUs, data transfer can be done concurrently with computation. The absence of branch-prediction logic in an SPU and the availability of SIMD instructions that can operate on vectors that are comprised of four numbers poses a challenge when developing high-performance CBE algorithms. © 2014 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Sorting on the cell broadband engine

The slurry erosion behavior of a zirconium based bulk metallic glass, Zr44Ti11Cu10Ni10Be25, was evaluated in this study. Slurry erosion tests were carried out using a non-circulating type test rig at impingement angles of 30°, 60°, and 90°. Commonly used hydroturbine steel was evaluated under the same test conditions. At 30° impingement angle, the metallic glass demonstrated nearly 2.6 times higher erosion resistance compared to the steel. At normal impingement, the metallic glass was marginally better. Lower erosion rates of the bulk metallic glass at oblique impingement angles was attributed to its significantly higher hardness and deformation induced partial devitrification. For normal impingement, material was removed in the form of fragments from highly strained platelets due to limited plasticity of bulk metallic glasses. The metallic glass demonstrated a brittle mode of erosion with higher erosion rate at higher angle of impingement. In contrast, hydroturbine steel showed ductile mode of erosion under the same test conditions. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Zirconium based bulk metallic glass-Better resistance to slurry erosion compared to hydroturbine steel

Slurry erosion (SE) is commonly observed in almost all kinds of components and machineries involved in fluid (liquid) transfer and delivery. During design and development phase of these components, test rigs are usually required to evaluate their performance; however, only few detailed designs of test rigs are available for SE investigations. Among the existing designs of SE test rigs, most of them belong to rotary type. In the present study, design of a new type of SE test rig has been proposed, which is simpler in construction and working. This newly designed test rig could possibly eliminate some of the limitations (velocity-concentration interdependence and lack of acceleration distance) found in the existing set-ups. Calibration of the test rig was done for jet velocity and erodent concentration. Commissioning of the rig was undertaken by evaluating the effect of operating parameters (concentration and impingement angle) on the erosion rates of aluminum and cast iron. Results show that the rig was able to capture the traditional responses of ductile and brittle erosion behaviors being observed for these materials. Repeatability of the test rig was ensured, and the results were found to be within the acceptable error limits. © 2012 ASM International.

Design and development of high-velocity slurry erosion test rig using CFD

Hydroturbines and other fluid machineries are generally subjected to cavitation and slurry erosion environment resulting in the degradation of impellers, vanes, nozzle, spear, labyrinth seal, and buckets. Although hydroturbine steel (13Cr4Ni) provides sufficient resistance against cavitation, however, it degrades severely under slurry erosion. Generally thermal spray coatings are used for protection against slurry erosion, however their performance under cavitation erosion is not appreciable. It is generally observed that the material removal process in cavitation and Liquid Impingement erosion is alike. In this paper, Liquid Impingement erosion performance of composite coatings of nickel and alumina, mixed in various proportions, has been investigated and compared with the uncoated 13Cr4Ni steel. Coatings were deposited using the High Velocity Flame Spray (HVFS) technique. Effects of micro hardness, fracture toughness, work-hardening index, residual stresses and porosity of coatings on the Liquid Impingement erosion performance are discussed. In depth study of the erosion mechanism in each coating and their work hardening capabilities were studied using SEM/EDS and micro-hardness tester. It was observed that fracture toughness and work hardening index of coatings correlate well with the erosion resistance. The effect of alumina content on erosion mechanism of the developed coatings was also investigated. The content of alumina was found to be having significant effect on the erosion response and the degradation mechanism of the coatings. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Understanding Liquid Impingement erosion behaviour of nickel-alumina based thermal spray coatings

The communication switching system enables the universal connectivity. The universal connectivity is realized when any entity in one part of the world can communicate with any other entity in another part of the world. In many ways telecommunication will acts as a substitute for the increasingly expensive physical transportation. The telecommunication links and switching were mainly designed for voice communication. Traffic handling capacity is an important element of service quality and will therefore play a basic role in this choice Microprocessor/microcontroller (MPMC) system can handle sequential operations with high flexibility and use of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) can handle concurrent operations with high speed in small size area. So combined features of both these systems can enhance the performance of the system. High Performance Hybrid Telephone Network System (HTSS) is designed using combination of stored program control (SPC) and VLSI technology. Touch tone receiver follows DTMF (Dual tone Multifrequency) concept and Time division multiplexing chip is used for the call establishment for inter and intra communication. © 2013 IEEE.

Network on chip for DTMF Decoder and TDM switching in telecommunication network with HDL environment

In television broadcasting the very high frequency/ultrahigh frequency bands are either not assigned or not used by existing broadcast. The unused television bands can be utilized for rural broadband Internet for larger distances without carrying interference to existing licensed television bands. The IEEE802.22 Wireless Regional Area Network standard involving devices and databases has been developed to utilize unassigned and unused very high frequency/ultrahigh frequency television bands using cognitive radio technology. Cognitive radio utilizes radio spectrum more efficiently. It senses the environment and configures itself accordingly. The cognitive radio technology is heavily dependent upon software defined radio technology as radio needs to be configurable according to the prevailing radio environment. © 2013 IEEE.

Rural wireless broadband Internet access in Wireless Regional Area Network using cognitive radio

This paper proposes a low power voltage reference generator in 0.18μm CMOS technology. The circuit presented here includes MOSFETs in sub threshold mode and uses the temperature dependence of threshold voltages and sub-threshold current of MOSFET to form a temperature-insensitive reference. An input supply voltage of 1.8 Volt is used for the circuit generating a total current of 1.33μA. By varying the device temperature over the range of -20°C to 100°C corresponding variation over the output voltage was found to lie in the range 397.8 to 400.2 mV. Thus a 0.6\% variation in voltage over the considered range of temperature is obtained. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Design of a Sub-0.4 V reference circuit in 0.18μm CMOS technology

Beacon receiver with better power estimation accuracy is the need for the propagation model development for Ka Band propagation studies experiment. This paper proposes the design philosophy of Digital Receiver, signal processing steps &amp; design of window to achieve the beacon power estimation accuracy of +/- 0.5 dB with measurement rate of 1 Hz up to 30 dBHz C/N0 of a single channel Ka-band beacon receiver working with IPSTAR Ka-band on-board beacon. A custom window with intelligent signal processing steps resulted into improved beacon power measurement accuracy of +/- 0.5 dB over a large programmable bandwidth which is better than the available beacon receiver developed so far under similar signal conditions. A performance comparison with different window functions is also presented. The present receiver design works in closed loop with L-band downconverter to achieve better power estimation accuracy and suitable for unmanned operation. The designed receiver is tested within lab setup with simulated input and also tested in field with 20.199827 GHz beacon onboard IPSTAR. © 2013 IEEE.

Digital receiver based Ka Band beacon receiver for improved beacon power estimation

This paper discusses a joint adaptive channel estimation and transceiver design scheme for MIMO two-way relay systems. In order to reduce the computational complexity at the transmitting nodes, the transceiver is implemented at the relay station. Adaptive transceiver consists of an adaptive postequalizer known as receive filter and an adaptive pre-equalizer known as transmit filter. The design of adaptive pre-equalizer requires the knowledge of Channel State Information (CSI) between nodes and relay station. So a channel tracking adaptive filter should be implemented at the relay. Due to the structure of a two-way relay system, the training signals used to train the receive filter can be used to train the channel tracking filter. Thus the adaptive channel estimator and receive filter work simultaneously. The channel estimate is then used to design the transmit filter. The adaptive filters are implemented using the NLMS algorithm. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified by making use of MATLAB simulations. © 2013 IEEE.
