Vehicles are able to access Internet via cellular networks GPRS/UMTS/LTE. The IEEE has also released 802.11p standard for vehicle ad hoc network (VANET) that can connect vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) using a dedicated spectrum. Other prominent wireless technology is Wi-Fi (IEEE802.11) that is used as an alternative for short distances. Currently vehicular communication relies on single type of wireless network, e.g., for safety applications utilizes 802.11p and for infotainment applications, Internet is accessed via cellular networks. Wi-Fi technology is always an attractive solution for increase in data demand in mobile network because high data rate can be achieved with low cost. In order to improve network performance and to reduce the data transfer cost and time, Wi-Fi is used as complementary network to deliver data that was transmitted via cellular network. Communication through above two different networks is called heterogeneous vehicular network (HVN). Frequent switching occurs from one network to other particularly when vehicle moves across overlapping heterogeneous network. Such switching is called vertical handover (VHO). Efficient VHO is needed to minimize the data transfer cost and time. Three cases have been considered in this paper, first Cellular network interworking with Wi-Fi with fixed inter-distance between Wi-Fi Access points (AP), second with statistical inter-distance between Wi-Fi-APs in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas, and third the combination of cellular, Wi-Fi, and VANET which outperforms compared to above two cases. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

Cost-effective vertical handoff strategies in heterogeneous vehicular networks

Vehicular communication is a part of intelligent transport system (ITS) which provides an intelligent way of transport to avoid accidents. Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication (V2V) is carried out through Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET). This paper discusses about the MAC (Media Access Control) layer protocol, features of IEEE802.11p standard, and the handover protocol problems it is facing. Due to vehicle high speed and the non-homogeneous structure of the network infrastructure, support of connectivity by VANET is still a challenging task. In this paper, a vertical handover algorithm has been analyzed using vehicle speed, and the results have been supported by simulation. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Inclusion of renewable energy resources with existing conventional generation resources summons revisit to optimization methods used in the field of generation scheduling. The Unit Commitment problem in itself is a highly convoluted problem governed by complex time varying constraints. It gets even more complicated when additional constraints are added due to inclusion of renewable generation backed up by battery storage system. An effort has been made in this paper to improve the model for solving the Unit Commitment problem of conventional thermal generation in conjunction with renewable energy based generation system with storage. A hybrid artificial intelligence based multiple stage solution methodology is envisaged to provide a techno-economical optimal solution to the problem. The proposed methodology provides economically better solution to the Unit Commitment problem of ten thermal generators when integrated with battery supported wind and solar generation. The overall operational cost gets reduced due to integration of renewable resources which gets further reduced by incorporating battery with a novel optimized charge/discharge scheduling technique. © 2018 - IOS Press and the authors. A multi-stage hybrid artificial intelligence based optimal solution for energy storage integrated mixed generation unit commitment problem

The general problem of DG placement deals with the size of DG and its location, but at the same time this placement must be economically justifiable. To gain benefits of DG placement, the DG must be optimally sized and placed. The paper uses analytical expressions for determination of optimal size and a methodology for optimal location of DG placement. The solar PV system is used as the distributed generator to be placed in primary distribution system for active power supply. The solar photovoltaic system is employed here as a type 1 distributed generator (DG) to supply active power to the distribution system. The methodology uses analytical expressions and is based upon the exact loss formula. Along with the optimal size and location, this paper also presents the economics of this placement considering loss reduction and capacity relieving of the distribution substation. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Optimal placement of solar pv as active power source in primary distribution system for loss reduction

An effort has been made to access what happens to prevailing thermal generation plants if the generation from renewable energy resources is increased above 20\% of total generation. A test case has been taken where generation system comprising of ten thermal generating units is in conjunction with a 500 MW Wind Energy generation plant, and a 500 MW Solar Energy generation plant. It has been found that on one hand the cost of generation gets significantly reduced whereas, on the other hand few thermal generators are compelled to remain with no generation at all. The study reveals the peak load shaving and the economy achieved in overall generation system versus the threat to individual thermal generating plant due to inclusion of nearly 23\% generation from renewable resources. © 2018 Shubham Tiwari et al.

Opportunities vis-à-vis threat to thermal generation due to rising renewable energy penetration

Orbital angular momentum concept has discussed with the help of mathematical equations. An investigation of 8 elements uniform circular array (UCA) for different Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) modes is carried out for three designs. The effect of array radius on OAM purity and the radial outward design to reduce phase complexity is discussed. Uniform circular antenna array for all possible combination has been simulated and its results are demonstrated for different physical and electrical characteristic. © 2018 IEEE.

Study of OAM mode purity by changing the orientation of antenna element

The stability of fibre spinning flow of a polymeric fluid is analysed in the presence of thermal effects. The spinline is modelled as a one-dimensional slender-body filament of the entangled polymer solution. The previous study (Gupta & Chokshi, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 776, 2015, pp. 268-289) analysed linear and nonlinear stability behaviour of an isothermal extensional flow in the air gap during the fibre spinning process. The present study extends the analysis to take in to account the non-isothermal spinning flow in which the spinline loses heat by convection to the surrounding air as well as by solvent evaporation. The nonlinear rheology of the polymer solution is described using the eXtended Pom-Pom (XPP) model. The non-isothermal effects influence the rheology of the fluid through viscosity, which is taken to be temperature and concentration dependent. The linear stability analysis is carried out to obtain the draw ratio for the onset of instability, known as the draw resonance, and a stability diagram is constructed in the plane. is the critical draw ratio, and is the flow Deborah number. The enhancement in viscosity driven by spinline cooling leads to postponement in the onset of draw resonance, indicating the stabilising role of non-isothermal effects. Weakly nonlinear stability analysis is also performed to reveal the role of nonlinearities in the finite amplitude manifold in the vicinity of the flow transition point. For low to moderate Deborah numbers, the bifurcation is supercritical, and the flow attains an oscillatory state with an equilibrium amplitude post-transition when DR>. The equilibrium amplitude of the resonating state is found to be smaller when non-isothermal effects are incorporated in comparison to the isothermal spinning flow. For very fast flows in the regime of high Deborah numbers, the finite amplitude manifold crosses over to a subcritical state. In this limit, the nonlinearities render the flow unstable even in the linearly stable regime of CD<DRc. © 2018 Cambridge University Press.

Stability analysis of non-isothermal fibre spinning of polymeric solutions

{\textcopyright} 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers. The quantification of evapotranspiration (ET) is highly important in water resources planning. The most reliable method for determining ET is to measure it in the field using lysimeters. However, the use of lysimeters for measurement of crop ET (ETc) is both expensive and time consuming, thus necessitating a cheaper yet reliable alternative method. One such method is to determine ET using the Penman-Monteith equation, which requires daily meteorological data as inputs. Three vapor pressure models (Models 1-3) are mentioned in Irrigation and Drainage Paper-56 of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO-56) for the estimation of actual vapor pressure (ea) that is used in the estimation of reference ET (ET0) by the FAO Penman-Monteith equation. Model 1, which uses daily maximum and minimum temperature and relative humidity (RH) data, is the preferred method to estimate ea; other models are used in data-constrained situations. Another vapor pressure model (Model 5) is proposed in this study. The performance of the vapor pressure models along with two other models (Models 4 and 6) existing in the literature is compared with that of Model 1 in estimating daily ea and ET0 values. The ea values were underestimated by Model 2, whereas Models 3, 4 and 5 overestimated ea. Results show that Models 4 and 5 (proposed model) performed better than FAO-56 Models 2 and 3 for estimating daily ea values for Roorkee station, India. However, Model 4, which uses only daily mean temperature and RH data, has lower accuracy in ET0 estimation when compared to Model 5. This is because Model 4 underestimated the daily saturation vapor pressure values. This suggests that daily mean temperature is not enough for the accurate estimation of daily ET0 values. The overall performance of Model 5, which uses the Lawrence dewpoint temperature-RH relationship, was more consistent and closest to Model 1 when compared to the other vapor pressure models for the study region in data-constrained situations. Furthermore, the effect of wind speed ranges on the performance of the vapor pressure models in ET0 estimation is also assessed. The effect of vapor pressure models in ET0 estimation is not considerable for light winds but becomes substantial for higher wind speeds.

Numerical Model for Soil Moisture Simulation in Cropped Area

We consider the decentralized power optimization problem for Gaussian fast-fading multiple access channel (MAC) so that the average sum throughput is maximized. In our MAC setup, each transmitter has access to only its own fading coefficient or channel state information (CSI), while the receiver has full CSI available at all instants. Unlike centralized MAC (full CSIT MAC) where the optimal powers are known explicitly, the analytical solution for optimal decentralized powers does not seem feasible. In this letter, we specialize the alternating-maximization (AM) method for numerically computing the optimal powers and ergodic capacity of the decentralized MAC for general fading statistics and average power constraints. For illustration, we apply our AM method to compute the capacity of MAC channels with fading distributions such as Rayleigh and Rician.
