The free field surface motion during an earthquake is governed by the characteristics of strong ground motions and the dynamic soil properties at a particular site. The soft soil deposits aggravate the seismic hazard due to the amplification of ground motion at some intensity level. In this article, seismic site response analysis is used to estimate the spatial distribution of surface level free field ground motion at Mumbai city due to multiple suites of input earthquake ground motions, scaled to conform to the target rock level uniform hazard response spectrum with minimum mean squared error. Free-field surface motion is found to be influenced by the softness of soil site and intensity of ground motion. Surface level free field motion due to excitation at bedrock level at each site is quantified in terms of spectral acceleration. Acceleration response spectra at selected natural periods and corresponding standard errors are computed and the results are presented in the form of contour maps. The spatial distribution of ground motion obtained in the form of contour maps will be useful in finding seismic coefficients to determine the design seismic forces and in identifying vulnerable places in Mumbai city. © 2011 ejge.

Spatial distribution of surface level free field motion at Mumbai city

The possibility of detecting very small defects in concrete was presented, representing disbands, voids and inhomogeneities, using the thermal imaging technique. Results are compared with pulse travel times measured using the ultrasonic pulse velocity (USPV) technique. Two types of specimens were prepared, beams and slabs, using grade 43 cement, Zone II sand as per IS 383 and 10-mm crushed coarse aggregate. The USPV and the thermal imaging techniques were applied on the four specimens to study the variations introduced by the experimental defects. A thermal image of the slab which had wooden blocks embedded at different depths can easily identify the region of discontinuity at depths of 10, 20, 30 and 40 mm. It is found that as compared to the conventional techniques, the thermal imaging provides an easy to interpret visual picture, in a single scan of the specimen used.

Defect detection in concrete structures using thermal imaging techniques

We present a novel word image based document indexing scheme by combination of string matching and hashing. The word image representation is defined by string codes obtained by unsupervised learning over graphical primitives. The indexing framework is defined by distance based hashing function which does the object projection to hash space by preserving their distances. We have used edit distance based string matching for defining the hashing function and for approximate nearest neighbor based retrieval. The application of the proposed indexing framework is presented for two document image collections belonging to Devanagari and Bengali script. © 2011 IEEE.

Document image indexing using edit distance based hashing

The pseudospark (PS) discharge has been shown to be a promising source of high brightness, high intensity electron beam pulses. The PS discharge sourced electron beam has potential applications in plasma filled microwave sources where normal material cathode cannot be used. Analysis of the electron beam profile has been done experimentally for different applied voltages. The investigation has been carried out at different axial and radial location inside the drift space in argon atmosphere. This paper represents experimentally found axial and radial variation of the beam current inside the drift tube of PS discharge based plasma cathode electron (PCE) gun. With the help of current density estimation the focusing and defocusing point of electron beam in axial direction can be analyzed. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Experimental analysis of Pseudospark sourced electron beam

In data integration, schema matching plays an important role. Present schema matching tools combine various match algorithms, each employing a particular technique to improve matching accuracy. However there is still no fully automatic tool is available and also there is lack of accuracy. As a step in this direction, we have proposed a new and efficient Semantic-Relationship schema matching (SR-Match) approach which considers the semantic relationships as one of the parameters for matching. Here in SR-Match, the initial mappings performed by the basic schema mapping techniques, acts as input to the relationship matcher. Relationship matcher compares the remaining unmapped elements based on their semantic relationship with their parents. It is observed that, if both semantics and relationships are taken into account, the degree of accuracy in matching results is improved. © Springer-Verlag 2011.

SR-match: A novel schema matcher based on semantic relationship

This paper presents a MIMO two-way relaying scheme where the transceiver filter at the Relay Station (RS) processes the data using Least Mean Square Algorithm (LMS) and Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithm. The relaying technique used is Amplify and Forward scheme (AF). Channel State Information (CSI) is assumed to be available only at the RS. So the transmit and receive processing are both done at the RS. The data at the two nodes S1 and S2 is Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulated. The metrics considered for performance comparison of the LMS/NLMS transceiver filter is Mean Square Error (MSE) and Bit Error Rate (BER). The computer simulations are performed using MATLAB. © 2011 IEEE.

Performance comparison of LMS/NLMS based transceiver filters for MIMO two-way relaying scheme

Hydrazones of different arylaldehydes were synthesized and their effect on endogenous proteolysis in liver was studied. It was observed that different functional groups on the benzene moiety altered the enzymatic activity and para-nitrobenzaldehyde hydrazone exhibited maximum inhibitory effect.

Proteolytic studies in liver homogenate in presence of substituted aryl hydrazones

The trusted middleware is the most commonly used solution to address the location privacy in location based services as generally such service providers are un-trusted entities that can be adversary attack sensitive points. The authors proposed an alternative solution which helps in avoiding a bottleneck in the existing system in terms of performance and availability as the entire client's service transactions are routed through the middleware to the actual Location Based Service Providers (LSP). In the proposed solution, the client and the LSPs can directly communicate with the same level of location security, privacy and anonymity. The trusted middleware is used as certifying authority that generates authentication certificates which contains the Proxy Identity (also called Pseudonyms), and the services subscribed with validity period. The encrypted certificate fulfills the authentication requirements at the LSP servers. In this paper we are reporting the implementation of the proposed system as a proof of concept using Struts Technology of Java. While evaluating the system features such as response time, delay, drop rate etc., the Google Map's location services and the internet browser have been considered as a service provider and client respectively. Performance analysis of our solution and that of prevalent architecture is done using Packmime model for http traffic generation of NS2 (Network Simulator 2) tool. The comparative graphs of the simulation results show that the proposed solution is better in terms of throughput, response time, drop rate and scalability in comparison to the existing middleware architectures in which the request response is every time routed through middleware, thus increasing the overheads. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Using middleware as a certifying authority in LBS applications

In this paper, we propose a graph theoretic approach for recognizing interactions between two human performers present in a video clip. We watch primarily the human poses of each performer and derive descriptors that capture the motion patterns of the poses. From an initial dictionary of poses (visual words), we extract key poses (or key words) by ranking the poses on the centrality measure of graph connectivity. We argue that the key poses are graph nodes which share a close semantic relationship (in terms of some suitable edge weight function) with all other pose nodes and hence are said to be the central part of the graph. We apply the same centrality measure on all possible combinations of the key poses of the two performers to select the set of'key pose doublets'that best represent the corresponding action. The results on standard interaction recognition dataset show the robustness of our approach when compared to the present state of the art method. Copyright 2011 ACM.

Recognizing interaction between human performers using'key pose doublet'

We propose a novel hierarchical framework for scene categorization. The scene representation is defined by latent topics extracted by Latent Dirichlet Allocation. The interaction of these topics across scene categories is learned by probabilistic graphical modelling. We use Conditional Random Fields in a hierarchical setting for discovering the global context of these topics. The learned random fields are further used for categorization of a new scene. The experimental results of the proposed framework is presented on standard datasets and on image collection obtained from the internet. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
