The Lost History of Liberalism: From Ancient Rome to the Twenty-First Century. By Helena Rosenblatt. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2018. 368p. $35.00 cloth.

The critique of growth is one of the defining features of ecological economics. Yet ecological economists have had relatively little to say about “post-growth” in the global South. In this article, we propose a new definition of post-growth as the combined application and theorization of degrowth, agrowth, steady-state economics and post-development. We then discuss – with special reference to India – seven ways of thinking about post-growth in the global South. Starting with the basic observation that the current patterns of growth-fueled “development” are ecologically, socially and financially unsustainable, we argue that serious post-growth thinking can only be world-systemic and rooted in class analyses. We then point out that the “GDP growth against poverty” connection is debatable and we instead argue, normatively, that an effective post-growth program should focus on fulfilled needs and on wealth redistribution. Against the idea that growth-critical approaches have their origin in industrialized countries, we show that many post-growth ideas have non-Western roots and a substantial number of potential contemporary allies in the global South. Discussing the example of Bhutan, we suggest that preliminary elements of a post-growth program are not as utopian as it might sound. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services is considered essential to formulate policies for sustainable development. But monetary valuation of BES reinforces the prevalent science-policy relationships that have led to the erosion of biodiversity. The livestock sector with multiple ecosystem services, valued for its contribution to the economy, strong policy and programme agendas, livestock breeding and maintenance sciences is used to illustrate the science-policy interface and the choices made for livestock improvement and for livestock biodiversity.

The many lives of Afghanistan: Reassessing disciplinary international relations

India's landmark 2014 election brought Prime Minister Narendra Modi to power with a broad mandate to reshape the country's foreign policy. His sophistication in this realm has surprised many, but current Indian foreign policy is also influenced by both structural domestic factors that pre-date his term and new actors who seek to gain influence or expand their roles. This report explores the effect of domestic influence on Indian foreign policy by outlining the growing links between domestic dynamics and India's international aspirations. It highlights five new domestic determinants of foreign policy decision-making in light of the BJP election victory in 2014. It also discusses five significant challenges that domestic factors pose to India's ability to turn its international aspirations into reality. These factors indicate that even Modi's historic mandate may not be enough to insulate his government from domestic forces – both allies and antagonists – that wish to shape foreign policy. The report concludes with thoughts on how these aspirations and challenges influence the playing field on which foreign policy decisions are currently made in India and may manifest themselves in the policy realm.

The objective of this chapter is to partake of recent developments in the field of cognitive neuroscience and to bring these into conversation with an important normative and practical concern - namely, the design of institutions that might further enhance the possibility of global cooperation. My interest here is specifi- cally in institutions that help to overcome global collective action problems. The chapter is largely conceptual and does not intend to be policy prescriptive. However, it advances the case for renewed attention to invisible and often taken-forgranted premises in mainstream accounts in the field of International Relations that might eventually generate more inclusive institutional designs and desirable deliberative outcomes. While Barbara Koremenos, Charles Lipson, and Duncan Snidal have given considerable and careful thought to ‘the rational design of international institutions’, it is important to also contend with the drift of Alexander Wendt’s claim that ‘[a]s a discipline international relations (IR) has barely begun to think about institutional design’ (Koremenos, Lipson, and Snidal 2001; Wendt 2001: 1019). © 2016 selection and editorial matter, Siddharth Mallavarapu.
