Interaction of water and methanol with graphene, C60 and (10, 10) nanotube

We report results of ab initio pseudopotential calculations on the nanocoating of gold on an icosahedral Al13 cluster and the findings of icosahedrally symmetric endohedral Al@ Al12 Au 20 - and empty cage Al12 Au 20 2- compound fullerenes formed of metal atoms. Twelve Al atoms cap the pentagonal faces of a dodecahedral Au20 cage in which each Au atom has three Al atoms and three Au atoms as nearest neighbors. Mixing of Al13 and Au20 magic clusters leads to a large heat of formation of 0.55 eV/atom and high stability of the Al@ Al12 Au20 compound fullerene. The binding energies of Al12 Au20 and Al@ Al12 Au20 are 3.017 and 3.007 eV/atom, respectively, which are much larger than 2.457 eV/atom for Au32 fullerene, leading to the possibility of their high abundance. {\textcopyright} 2009 The American Physical Society.

Coating of a layer of Au on Al13: The findings of icosahedral Al@ Al12 Au 20 - And Al12 Au 20 2- fullerenes using ab initio pseudopotential calculations

Automatically classifying ECG recordings for Malignant Ventricular Arrhythmia is fraught with several diffi-culties. Even normal ECG signals exhibit only quasi-periodic nature, and contain various irregularities. The key to more accurate detection is the use of position, and amount of local singularities in the signals. In this paper, we propose a Hölder-SVM detection algorithm using a novel hybrid arrangement of binary and multiclass SVMs designed to take care of class imbalance rampant in biomedical signals. As a result, we significantly reduce the number of false negatives - patients falsely classified as normal. We used the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database for seven different arrhythmias. We compare our hybrid SVM with a suitable conventional SVM, and show better results.We also use the new arrangement for features proposed earlier, and demonstrate the gain in accuracy. Our concept of hybrid SVM is applicable to a wide variety of multiclass classification problems. © 2009 IEEE.

Hybrid SVM for multiclass arrhythmia classification

We study the effects of Si doping on the bonding nature and elastic properties of AlMB14 compounds having B12 icosahedral clusters with M Li, Mg and Na, by means of ab initio calculations. We find that Si substitution leads to a decrease in the cohesive energy as well as in the values of the bulk, shear and Young's moduli. {\textcopyright} 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Si-doping effect on bonding nature and elasticity of AlMB14 with M=Li, Mg and Na

A hybrid methodology, viz., multicanonical jump walk annealing assisted by tabu list (MJWAT) is proposed for solving dynamic optimization problems in chemically reacting systems. This method combines the power of multicanonical sampling with the beneficial features of simulated annealing. Incorporating tabu list further enhances the efficiency of the method. The superior performance of the MJWAT is highlighted with the help of five benchmark case studies. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multicanonical jump walk annealing assisted by tabu for dynamic optimization of chemical engineering processes

Heart rate variability (HRV) provides an estimate of sympathetic and parasympathetic influences on the heart rate. Although HRV has been extensively studied, sustained clinical use is still outstanding. The noninvasive, convenient, and inexpensive arterial pulse originate from heartbeats, but has not been studied in a systematic fashion except in rudimentary ways. In this paper, we present Pulse Rate Variability (PRV) as an alternative to HRV. We give evidence for the detection of disorders in patients using PRV, paving the way for future clinical use. © 2008 IEEE.

Arterial Pulse Rate Variability Analysis for diagnoses

Ab initio calculations on Pt clusters having diameters of up to about 3 nm show planar, layered, pyramidal, cage, simple cubic and octahedral growth. Planar structures are preferred up to Pt9, while layered and pyramidal structures are favored in the range of Ptn, where n=10-20. In some cases, simple cubic and octahedral isomers become competitive with layered growth, or they have the lowest energy. Between n=21 and 24, decahedral isomers are most favorable with a decahedral (empty center) cage for Pt22. Around n=24, there is again a transition and simple cubic structures become most favorable up to around n=38. Beyond this size, our results suggest octahedral isomers to be most favorable among the different growth modes explored by us, such as simple cubic, cuboctahedral, decahedral and icosahedral. To our knowledge, platinum clusters are the first example of transition metal clusters that grow in bulk structure from a relatively small size range of n∼40 and for which a transition to commonly found closed packed icosahedral growth is unlikely. We find that a triangular isomer of Pt6 and a square planar isomer of Pt9 play the key role in the growth behavior and the formation of magic clusters of Pt that are rich in such triangular and/or square faces. Our results show that clusters with n=6, 9, 10, 14, 18, 22, 27 and 36 with complete atomic shells are magic and are relatively more stable. In most cases, the clusters are weakly ferromagnetic. However, in some cases, a mixed ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic coupling is obtained, such as that for Pt6. The magnetic moments decrease with an oscillatory behavior as the size increases. The electronic structure of large octahedral clusters with n∼200 having (111) type faces develops similarity to bulk Pt (111) surface, but significant deviations exist that could lead to their different and size dependent behavior for reactions. {\textcopyright} 2008 The American Physical Society.

Evolution of atomic and electronic structure of Pt clusters: Planar, layered, pyramidal, cage, cubic and octahedral growth

Recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) has emerged as a useful tool for detecting singularities in non-stationary time-series data. In this paper, we use RQA to analyze the velocity-time data acquired using laser doppler anemometry (LDA) signals in a bubble column reactor for Single point and Multipoint point spargers. The recurring dynamical states within the velocity-time-series occurring due to the bubble and the liquid passage at the point of measurement, are quantified by RQA features (namely % Recurrence, % Determinism, % Laminarity and Entropy), which in turn are regressed using support vector regression (SVR) to predict the point gas hold-up values. It has been shown that SVR-based model for the bubble column reactor can be potentially useful for online prediction and monitoring of the point gas hold-up for different sparging conditions. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. SVR-based prediction of point gas hold-up for bubble column reactor through recurrence quantification analysis of LDA time-series

We study hexagonal assemblies of M6 X6 (M=Mo and W and X=S, Se and Te) nanowires from first-principles calculations to understand their structural stability, electronic properties and the effects of Li intercalation. It is shown that due to van der Waals interactions between the nanowires, the intercalation is achieved without a significant change in their atomic structure. With an increase in Li concentration, we predict a new phase for Li3 Mo6 S6 compound, in which the hexagonal assembly transforms to a monoclinic structure by a change in the orientation of nanowires. The Lix Mo6 S6 assemblies are electrically conductive and can be potentially used as cathode materials in Li-ion batteries for nanoscale applications. The voltage of such a battery, calculated to be 1.7 V, can be manipulated such as by iodine doping without a significant change in the atomic structure. {\textcopyright} 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Lithiated assemblies of metal chalcogenide nanowires

Extensive research has been done to show that heart-beats are composed of the interaction of many physiological components operating on different time scales, with nonlinear and self-regulating nature. The more direct, and easily accessible manifestation of the heart-beat is the pulse; however, it has not been studied anywhere near as extensively. In this paper, we establish the relevance of the multifractal formalism for the arterial pulse, which has long been used as a fundamental tool for diagnosis in the Traditional Indian Medicine, (Ayurveda). The finding of power-law correlations through detrended fluctuation analysis indicates presence of scale-invariant, fractal structures in the pulse. These fractal structures are then further established by self-affine cascades of beat-to-beat fluctuations revealed by wavelet decomposition at different time scales. Finally, we investigate how these pulse dynamics change with age, and disorder. The analytic tools we discuss may be used on a wide range of physiological signals. © 2008 IEEE.
